The friend of one of the four American soldiers
killed during a training exercise in Lithuania
said he is struggling to process the loss.
Jose Duenez Jr., a native of Joliet, Illinois, and three other U.S. Army soldiers
were found dead after their armored vehicle sank in a swamp
while conducting a mission last Tuesday to repair and tow an immobilized tactical vehicle.
Duenez's friend, Ben Muller, said he had just sent Duenez a Snaptchat last week, and when he didn't hear back, he started to put the pieces together.
The two met a decade ago at a paintball business in Lockport and stayed close. Muller said Duenez was a tank mechanic in the Army – a job he loved.
Duenez and three other soldiers were found dead after a massive six-day search by U.S., Polish and Lithuanian armed forces.
Their 63-ton armored recovery vehicle
was out for a tactical training exercise
when it went under 15 feet of water, claylike mud, and silt.
Excavators, pumps, and several hundred tons of gravel and earth were moved to recover and pull up the tank. Duenez leaves behind a wife and a young son.
"I love that guy. … He had stuff about him that I had never seen in anyone else. I mean, he was compassionate, he was caring. The man would give you the shirt off his back if you didn't have it," Muller said.
Duenez's family said they need more time to process his death before they share his story.
Muller said they are waiting to hear when his remains will be sent back to the United States.

Two senior House Democrats are asking Attorney General Pam Bondi for the timeline of the Department of Justice's (DOJ) declassification and release of the convicted sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein's files after tech billionaire Elon Musk accused President Trump of being named in the documents. Stephen Lynch (Mass.), the acting ranking member of the House Oversight Committee and Robert Garcia (Calif.), the top Democrat on the Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets, asked Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel in a Thursday night letter to 'immediately clarify whether this allegation is true and respond to this letter with the requested information and documentation.' Apart from the release of the files, the House lawmakers also asked about Trump's alleged role in reviewing the documents and his role in determining 'DOJ's ability to declassify and make public said documents.' The duo also requested a list of all personnel involved in the release of the files and to elaborate why the documents previously released to the Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets had 'significant redactions.' The DOJ declined to comment. The Hill has reached out to the FBI for comment. 'Any attempts to prevent the appropriate release of the Epstein files to shield the President from truth and accountability merits intense scrutiny by Congress and by the Department of Justice (DOJ),' Lynch and Garcia wrote in the 3-page letter. The DOJ released over 100 pages of files in late February, which included a redacted contact book and flight logs. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), who leads the declassification task force, has previously slammed Bondi over the February document dump. 'THIS IS NOT WHAT WE OR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ASKED FOR and a complete disappointment,' Luna said. 'GET US THE INFORMATION WE ASKED FOR!' Trump Adviser Urges Immigration Investigation Into Elon Musk's Past as "Illegal Alien"
As Elon Musk and Donald Trump's bromance experiences a rapid but totally predictable disassembly, Musk's archnemesis Steve Bannon is calling on the president to investigate the world's richest man's dubious immigration history. "They should initiate a formal investigation of his immigration status, because I am of the strong belief that he is an illegal alien, and he should be deported from the country immediately," Bannon told the New York Times on Thursday. He also declared that Musk should be investigated for his alleged drug habit. Bannon was a former chief strategist to Trump. He no longer holds the role in an official capacity, but remains an informal adviser and an influential voice on the American far right. Musk and Trump traded blows on their respective personal social media playgrounds this week, not long after Musk suddenly announced that his time as a "special government employee" was over. Once out of the White House, it didn't take long for things to escalate from Musk blasting the president's newly proposed spending bill, to Trump threatening to cancel Elon's billions of dollars worth of government contracts, to Musk clapping back by saying he'd cut off NASA's invaluable access to his spacecraft. Musk also really went off the rails by shouting from the rooftops of X that Trump is in the unreleased Epstein files, and then agreeing that the president should be impeached. We can only imagine the pure schadenfreude bliss that Bannon must be experiencing right now. He's made no secret of his contempt for Musk, who he's previously called a "toddler," and "not tough enough," and a "parasitic illegal alien." Some of that is probably his jealousy speaking: Musk had replaced Bannon as the president's golden boy, a role he lost when Trump kicked Bannon kicked to the curb for stealing the limelight during his first term in office. Bannon, an alleged white supremacist, has always been skeptical of Musk's sudden realignment with the MAGA movement, and has constantly chided the Silicon-Valley-liberal turned Texas-based-technocrat for not being conservative — or racist — enough. So you can bet he's making the most of Musk's downfall, capitalizing on his dubious personal immigration history. Despite his constant slandering of immigrants, the South Africa-born businessman was likely at one point an "illegal" immigrant too, overstaying on a student visa even though he'd dropped out of school to work on his startup. His brother, Kimbal, has admitted to both of them working illegally. Bannon, on top of calling for Musk's deportation, has recommended nationalizing Musk's businesses, too. "President Trump tonight should sign an executive order calling for the Defense Production Act to be called and seize SpaceX tonight before midnight," Bannon said Thursday on an episode of his War Room podcast, as quoted by the Daily Beast. But he faces a fearsome keyboard warrior in Musk, who retaliated in a slur-bedazzled tweet: "Bannon is peak r*tard." Then he doubled down, clarifying that Bannon was, in fact, a "communist r*tard." There's clearly no love being lost between the two. Trump, for his part, is doing his best Don Draper impression. "I'm not even thinking about Elon. He's got a problem. Nearly four days after officials found the bodies of three young sisters at a remote Washington state campground, allegedly slain by their own father, federal law enforcement officials say they are investigating hundreds of leads and tips as they search for 32-year-old Travis Decker. The manhunt for Decker continued on Friday, June 6, a Chelan County Sheriff's Office spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY, four days after the girls' bodies were found and a week after they were first reported missing. Officials shut down a large swath of a national forest in Washington while law enforcement continues to search the area for the girls' father, who is the case's sole suspect so far. The order to close a hefty portion of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest went into effect on June 5 and is slated to last through June 18, the sheriff's office, the lead agency in the case, announced June 5 in a news release. The man is wanted connection to the deaths of his daughters, Paityn Decker, 9; Evelyn Decker, 8; and Olivia Decker, 5. An outdoorsman, Travis Decker attended mountain survival school and served in the U.S. Army, officials said. He is suspected of killing his daughters after taking them for a scheduled custody visitation. The parents were divorced, and Travis Decker was homeless and staying primarily in his truck. A search turned up Travis Decker's white 2017 GMC Sierra truck near a campground, and the sisters were found dead nearby. Their father was nowhere to be found.
