Just hours after the victory, what was meant to be a celebration parade at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday turned into a nightmare. As thousands of fans, many of them young, hopeful, and draped in red and gold, gathered to catch a glimpse of their heroes, the crowd swelled out of control. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In the chaos that followed, 11 people lost their lives, and at least 47 others were injured in a devastating stampede-like rush. Among the victims were teenagers, students, and young ardent supporters who had simply come to be part of a celebration. Here's what we know about them. Bhumik: A 19-year-old who wanted to take pictures for social media Bhumik, a 19-year-old first-year engineering student, was among those who tragically lost their lives. According to The New Indian Express, he had come with a large group of friends to the stadium but got separated in the crowd. When his friends finally found him, he had already collapsed. They attempted CPR and searched for ambulances, but found none nearby. 'There were no ambulances in sight. Even the police didn't know what to do,' one of his friends told the newspaper. Eventually, the police took him in a jeep to Vydehi Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Bhumik's family was inconsolable. Speaking to the news outlet, his mother said, 'I kept telling him not to go. Now even if I shout his name, he won't come back like he used to.' His father added, 'Ministers will come and go. But who will bring back my son now? If something had been done before organising all this, maybe he would have been saved.' Reuters Divyanshi: A schoolgirl who was celebrating with her family Divyanshi, a 14-year-old schoolgirl from Kannuru in Bengaluru, had gone to the event with her mother, aunt, and other family members. The tragedy unfolded while they waited near the stadium gates. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Her grandfather, Lakshmi Narayan, told The News Minute, 'I got a call from them in the afternoon. I told them to be careful. I don't know what happened at the gate. I was at home when it happened. I came here as soon as I heard.' Divyanshi was taken to Bowring Hospital, where she lost her life. Her aunt expressed anger over the lack of safety and medical facilities at the event. 'There was no police presence at the stadium. There was no one to provide CPR or anything. We put her in a car and took her to the hospital,' she said, adding, 'There was so much police protection when the CM came, but nothing at the stadium.' As reported by The New Indian Express, she had taken leave from work and arrived at the parade with a group of colleagues. She was pushed and fell during the rush and was separated from her friends. The Cubbon Park police later informed her friends that she had been taken to Vydehi Hospital. But until 8 pm, her parents had no information. Her friends were eventually told she had been brought in dead. Eyewitnesses told news outlets that confusion arose when people were suddenly instructed to download an app to access free passes. Mahesh, one such witness, said, 'There was no prior information, and many were left struggling with poor mobile networks. The announcement came just minutes before the gates were opened and the crowd kept increasing.' 'As the gates opened, people rushed in, and those who couldn't get their passes on time started jumping over barricades, triggering panic and a stampede-like situation,' he added. PTI Manoj: Son of pani-puri vendor trampled under the crowd Manoj Kumar, a student at Presidency College in north Bengaluru, had gone to the stadium with three friends from his neighbourhood. In the chaos, they lost sight of him. His death was later confirmed by Md Hussain, 24, an eyewitness who had helped transport Manoj to Bowring Hospital and had his mobile phone. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Hussain, an MBA student, told The Indian Express, 'Around 3.35 pm, the crowd which was waiting outside gate number 20 of the Chinnaswamy Stadium for over an hour became restless. When the gate was opened a bit for checking, the crowd pushed through. There were only three policemen and a few stadium security guards.' He added, 'This person's leg got stuck in a police barricade and he fell… some 500 people trampled over him. With police support, we had to fight with the crowd for two hours to get his body out of the stadium. It took another hour to take him to hospital.' Kumar's father, a pani-puri seller, is devastated by the loss of his 18-year-old son. 'I did not allow him to clean the plates at my pani puri shop because I wanted him to go to college. I brought him up with a lot of care. Now, he is gone," he said. AP Devi: A solo fan from Tamil Nadu Devi, 29, hailed from Tamil Nadu and worked at a private firm in Bengaluru. She had gone alone to the stadium, where hundreds of thousands of fans had gathered. One of Devi's colleagues told The Indian Express, 'We were trying to call her for a long time after hearing of the stampede… someone answered and asked us to come to the hospital.' Unfortunately, Devi had succumbed to her injuries. Poorna Chandra: An RCB fan from Mandya Another victim, 25-year-old Poorna Chandra, was from Mandya district. A family friend told The New Indian Express, 'In videos on social media, we saw people trying to revive him… and informed his family.' His body was later located at Vydehi Hospital. Dr Humera, the medical administrator at Vydehi Hospital, told The New Indian Express that most of the victims were young, between 20 to 30 years old. She confirmed that the likely cause of death in many cases was suffocation due to the stampede. She added that 12 injured patients were in stable condition and receiving outpatient treatment for injuries such as leg pain, toe injuries and a minor head injury. US expected to block Gaza ceasefire vote at UNSC
The UN Security Council will vote Wednesday on a resolution calling for a ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access in Gaza , a measure expected to fail due to a US veto. It is the 15-member body's first vote on the subject since November, when the United States , a key Israeli ally, also blocked a text calling for an end to fighting. The new resolution "demands an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza respected by all parties." It also calls for the "immediate, dignified and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups." Underlining a "catastrophic humanitarian situation" in the Palestinian territory , the resolution additionally demands the lifting of all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Live Events It will be put to vote at 4:00 pm Wednesday (2000 GMT), but several diplomats indicated to AFP that they expected the US to wield its veto power. They added that the representatives from the 10 elected members of the Council, who will introduce the text, tried in vain to negotiate with the American side. The veto, if applied, would be the first by Washington since US President Donald Trump took office in January. Israel has faced growing international pressure to end its war in Gaza, which was triggered by the unprecedented October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas on Israeli soil. That scrutiny has increased over flailing aid distribution in Gaza, which Israel blocked for more than two months before allowing a small number of UN vehicles to enter in mid-May. Beijing slams Rubio ‘attack' on China after Tiananmen Square remarks
Beijing hit back Wednesday (June 4, 2025) at U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio for saying the world will 'never forget' the deadly Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989, describing his remarks as an 'attack' on China. Troops and tanks forcibly cleared peaceful protesters from Beijing's Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989, after weeks-long demonstrations demanding greater political freedoms. The exact toll is unknown but hundreds died, with some estimates exceeding 1,000. China's communist rulers have since sought to erase any public mention of the crackdown, with censors scrubbing all online references. Police were seen by AFP on Wednesday (June 4, 2025) at the entrance to Wan'an Cemetery, a site in west Beijing where victims of the crackdown are known to be buried. Officers were also posted at several intersections leading into Tiananmen Square. On Wednesday (June 4, 2025) evening, a line of buses and a cherry picker partially blocked screens at the German and Canadian embassies showing images of candles, a symbol commonly used to pay tribute to Tiananmen victims. 'Never forget Mr. Rubio said in a statement the 'world will never forget' what happened on June 4, even as Beijing 'actively tries to censor the facts'. Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te echoed Mr. Rubio's remarks, vowing to preserve the memory of victims of the bloody crackdown. 'Authoritarian governments often choose to be silent and forget history; democratic societies choose to preserve the truth and refuse to forget those who have contributed to the ideal of human rights and their dreams,' Lai said on Facebook. China claims Taiwan is part of its territory and has threatened to seize the democratically-run island by force. 'Reaffirm our commitment' In Hong Kong, jailed activist Chow Hang-tung began a 36-hour hunger strike on Wednesday (June 4, 2025), a dogged attempt to individually commemorate the anniversary in a city that once hosted huge public remembrances. The former lawyer used to help organise an annual vigil that drew tens of thousands to the city's Victoria Park. Hong Kong had been the only place under Chinese rule where commemoration of the crackdown was tolerated. Slogans at the candlelight vigil sometimes called for democracy in China and an end to one-party rule. But after huge and sometimes violent protests roiled the city in 2019, Beijing brought in a wide-ranging national security law that has quashed political dissent. The public memorial has effectively been banned and Chow imprisoned, facing a potential life sentence on subversion charges. On Wednesday (June 4, 2025), AFP journalists saw at least seven people taken away by police around Victoria Park, including two schoolgirls holding white flowers — which often signify mourning in Chinese culture -- and a man standing in silent tribute. Some people were stopped and searched by police. 'It's a shame that there's no more (vigils)... In fact, no one will ever forget (the vigils),' a man named Yuen, 49, who did not give his first name, told AFP. Over the last few years, activists have been detained for 'offences in connection with seditious intention' around the anniversary. In a social media post, Chow said her hunger strike would 'commemorate this day and reaffirm our commitment' and urged authorities to apologise over her 'wrongful' imprisonment. 'History tells us that (the apology) will likely take a very long time –- the Tiananmen Mothers have been waiting for 36 years and still have not received an apology,' she said, referring to an activist group made up of families of victims of the crackdown. A video featuring 87-year-old Zhang Xianling, whose 19-year-old son was killed in 1989, circulated online last week. China's authorities have never addressed the group's plea for dialogue around the issue — instead, they have used all means to monitor and wiretap members of the Tiananmen Mothers, Zhang said. 'The lights in Victoria Park may have been blown out by the gales, but the sparks of justice will glow in the hearts of every conscientious person,' she added. At a vigil on Wednesday (June 4, 2025) on Taipei's Liberty Square, 20-year-old American student Lara Waldron told AFP: 'I feel like this June 4 is very close to me right now. 'As a college student, I'm of the age of many organisers and participants — people (who) lost their lives in Tiananmen.'
