Nagesh Kukunoor on SIT and LTTE in The Hunt: Ensured I humanised both sides
Adding a high-profile political thriller to Sony LIV's (OTTplay Premium) lineup is the release of The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case on July 4, 2025. The 90-day investigation that followed the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in May 1991 is dramatised in the limited series, which is produced by Applause Entertainment and Kukunoor Movies. Nagesh Kukunoor and a still from The Hunt
Stream Nagesh Kukunoor's acclaimed films like Iqbal, Dor, 8 x 10 Tasveer, and Mod now on OTTplay Premium for a dose of heartfelt storytelling and unique narratives.
Ninety Days is the first-person account of the manhunt written by investigative journalist Anairudhya Mitra, from which the show is adapted. In one story, SIT commander D.R. Kaarthikeyan is played by Amit Sial, while the other characters include investigators Sahil Vaid, Bagavathi Perumal, Danish Iqbal, and Girish Sharma. A parallel tale follows LTTE operators on the run. Nagesh Kukunoor's approach
Before the release, writer-director Nagesh Kukunoor told us that he began by trying to put aside any preconceived ideas about the characters. The filmmaker explained, 'My approach was simple, and it's something that I've used all my life, which is, no matter which character I write, fictional or, in this case, clearly someone who existed and/or who is living right now, I always humanise them. It's as simple as that; that's the only approach I have.'
He further shared that he treats every aspect of the narrative with the utmost fairness. He stated, "So when I come at it, it's with as objective a view as I can from an outsider's point of view… I just made sure that I humanised both sides and presented it as it was."
Kukunoor describes the real‑world investigation—still the largest manhunt in Indian history—as a sequence of 'layers and ups and downs' that needed no extra embellishment. No commentary on contemporary politics
Questions of public trauma and intelligence lapses are also touched on in the show. But Kukunoor held back from making connections to modern politics. The filmmaker revealed, 'No, I chose to completely stay away from that… anything that one tries to make a larger commentary on is open to controversy and sensationalising in today's times. So I was very clear that I would stick to the Ninety Days, the way they played out, and leave it at that.'
He pointed out that viewers sought out real-life analogies even in his earlier fictional works, like City of Dreams. Thus, Kukunoor shared, 'When it came to real material, we made sure that we stuck to only the facts and not any kind of things that really do echo the current times… It was just sticking to the events the way they unfolded.'
The Hunt intends to offer a condensed, fact-based reconstruction instead of offering commentary, thanks to its simultaneous emphasis on the Special Investigation Team's meticulous procedural work and the fugitives' flight. Sony LIV will drop all episodes beginning July 4, 2025.

Four arrested after 1,400 kg adulterated paneer seized
Noida: Four Aligarh-based men were arrested on Sunday for allegedly manufacturing and supplying adulterated paneer to a Noida market, police said, adding that 1,400 kilograms of adulterated paneer and raw material used in its production were confiscated from their possession. Late Saturday night, police received a tip-off about a pick-up truck carrying adulterated paneer, and that it was en route to Noida for delivery, said officers. (Representational image) Late Saturday night, police received a tip-off about a pick-up truck carrying adulterated paneer, and that it was en route to Noida for delivery, said officers. 'We set up a checkpoint and stopped the truck for inspection in Sector 63,' said DCP (Central Noida) Shakti Mohan Avasthy. 'The truck driver, Gulfam (single name), 23, from Sehajpur, Aligarh, and two of his aides, hired as daily wagers—Naved, 20, and Iqbal, 30, also from Aligarh—revealed that they worked for Faridabad-based men named Guddu and Afsar,'the DCP added. Police said Naved had joined the operation about a fortnight ago, while Iqbal claimed that it was his first time delivering paneer. 'Guddu, a resident of Pisawa, Aligarh, was arrested on Sunday, and efforts are on to nab his partner Afsar,' said DCP Avasthy. An investigation found that the suspects had been involved in manufacturing and supplying adulterated paneer in the National Capital Region (NCR), including Noida and Greater Noida, for the last six months. 'They used to deliver quintals of paneer to Noida every two to three days. Their shopkeepers were fixed clients. We are investigating whether these shopkeepers were aware of the adulteration,' said Sector 63 station house officer Avdhesh Pratap Singh. 'They were producing two types of paneer—one made by mixing ₹ 30-per-litre milk with some powder, and the other by mixing dry milk with palmolein oil… charging ₹ 180 and ₹ 220 per kilogram,' said Singh, adding that Sections 274 (adulteration of food), 275 (sale of noxious food), and 318 (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita have been registered at the Sector 63 police station. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the absconding accused. Police recovered machines used to manufacture paneer, raw material including powder, palmolein oil, and small bottles of paint used to whiten the paneer. Muzaffarnagar court clears last accused in double murder during 2013 riots
Agra: A court in Muzaffarnagar has acquitted the last accused in a double murder case linked to the 2013 communal riots after the key witness turned hostile and no substantial evidence was found against him. Binu Singh, 46, faced trial for the killing of Sarajo, 35, and a 13-year-old boy, who were allegedly set ablaze by a mob led by him in Lank village, Shamli district, on Sept 8, 2013. The original complaint by the boy's father, Iqbal, said that a mob, led by Singh, used weapons and petrol bombs to assault members of the minority community. Iqbal's mother, Ramzano, was also critically injured. Singh was charged under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting armed with a deadly weapon), 302 (murder), 149 (unlawful assembly), 326 (grievous hurt by dangerous weapons), 436 (mischief by fire to destroy a house), and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the IPC. Ten others were arrested initially and tried together before they were acquitted in 2016 due to lack of evidence. Singh, who was absconding at the time, surrendered later and faced a separate trial. Iqbal turned hostile in court, leading to Singh's acquittal. Defence lawyer Pradeep Kumar Malik said, "The court found no substantial evidence to convict my client." Singh's acquittal added to a series of similar verdicts in riot-related cases in recent months. In April, a fast-track court in Muzaffarnagar cleared 16 men of murder charges from the 2013 riots, citing lack of credible evidence. In May, another court acquitted 11 residents of Lisarh village in Shamli accused of looting and arson, after witnesses turned hostile and the prosecution failed to establish its case. In the separate May case, Kamruddin and his family fled their home in Lisarh village after it was allegedly looted and set on fire. He filed a complaint on Sept 9, 2013, at Phugana police station, and the SIT filed a chargesheet under section 436 of IPC, among others, against 11 accused. The court eventually cleared all of them. The 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots left over 60 people dead and more than 50,000 displaced. The violence began with the killing of Shahnawaz, 25, in Kawal village on Aug 27, 2013. He was allegedly stabbed by eight men. A mob then lynched two of the alleged attackers — cousins Sachin and Gaurav — triggering a wave of communal violence. As per official records, police registered 510 cases of violence, murder and rape. A total of 1,480 people from both communities were arrested. Police filed charge sheets in 175 cases, while 335 cases were closed. Only three cases, including the Kawal killings that sparked the riots, have led to convictions.
