UConn Star Makes Special Appearance for Paige Bueckers' Wings Game

Yahoo2 days ago

After losing their first two games of this season, the Dallas Wings headed north to take on the Minnesota Lynx on Wednesday.
Rookie guard Paige Bueckers, the No. 1 pick in last month's WNBA draft, struggled in her season debut, but on Monday, she had 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and eight assists versus the Seattle Storm.

She struggled early in Wednesday's game, but she did have some support, as Azzi Fudd, her former teammate at UConn, was in the stands.
The two teamed up this past season to lead the UConn Huskies to the women's NCAA championship.
Fudd averaged 13.6 points a game while shooting 47.4% from the field, 43.6% from 3-point range and 91.7% from the free throw line during the 2024-25 campaign for the Huskies. She was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player and scored 24 points on 9-of-17 overall shooting in the championship game versus South Carolina.
Instead of making herself eligible for the WNBA draft after her fourth season at UConn, she decided to remain put for one more season.

Bueckers put up 19.9 points on 53.4% overall shooting and 41.9% from 3-point land, 4.6 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game last season for UConn. She is a very adept and efficient three-level scorer, and her offensive game has been compared to that of Diana Taurasi, who won three WNBA titles and three NCAA titles at UConn.

After full-time halftime of Wednesday's game, the Lynx defeated the Wings 85-81. With 12 points, Bueckers had 10 assists and three steals.

Malia Obama's bold Nike debut honors HBCU culture

When Malia Obama stepped behind the camera to direct her first commercial, she didn't just make art—she made history. The Nike spot, launching A'ja Wilson's signature 'A'One' sneaker on May 6, did more than promote a shoe; it's a cinematic love letter to Black excellence, athletic greatness, and the undeniable rhythm of HBCU culture. For HBCU sports fans, this moment hits different. Advertisement Obama's direction centers Wilson's roots in Columbia, South Carolina, and her deep ties to Benedict College—where her father, Roscoe Wilson, was once a standout player. The commercial's heart-pounding choreography, performed by Benedict College dancers, mirrors the precision and pride seen every fall on HBCU football sidelines. It's a nod to the halftime shows, the battle of the bands, the sweat and swagger of Black college sports that too often go unseen by mainstream media. 'When you think about HBCUs, you think about tradition, you think about family,' Wilson said. 'That's what raised me.' Wilson, now a two-time WNBA MVP and Olympic gold medalist, continues to shine a spotlight on the communities that molded her. And thanks to Malia's storytelling, that spotlight now beams globally. The 'A'One' isn't just a shoe—it's the first Nike signature sneaker for a Black woman athlete in over a decade. The campaign itself breaks barriers, and with Obama at the helm, it speaks to a new generation of fans who want to see authenticity in sports marketing. Advertisement For HBCU alumni and athletes, this commercial is more than representation—it's validation. Let this be the start, not the exception. Demand more stories rooted in HBCU greatness. Because when the culture leads, the world watches. Related: Charlotte's bold power play to bring CIAA Tournament home Related: Shaquille O'Neal sends strong message by showing HBCU pride on TNT

Recap: Mystics implode late in loss to Aces

The Washington Mystics lost to the Las Vegas Aces 75–72 at Michelob ULTRA Arena on Friday, May 23, 2025, to fall to 2-2 on the season. A balanced scoring effort propelled Washington to an early 18-16 lead after the opening frame. That advantage continued as the Mystics grew a 10-point lead behind seven points and six rebounds from rookie forward Kiki Iriafen and a pair of triple from rookie guard Sonia Citron. Advertisement That lead was short-lived, as Las Vegas stormed back with a 13-5 run to trim their deficit to two points entering the final minutes of the first half. The Mystics responded with a 9-2 run of their own to enter the break ahead, 42-33. Iriafen led all scorers with 11 points and seven rebounds. Citron and Jade Melbourne each drilled for a pair of buckets midway through the third to keep Washington ahead by double-digits. The Mystics maintained a 59-50 lead entering the final quarter as they looked to knock off the Aces. Defense dominated the opening minutes of the fourth, as Washington led 63-55 with 5:54 remaining in regulation. With Las Vegas hanging around, the Mystics' rookies stepped up down the stretch. Iriafen grabbed an offensive rebound en route to a put-back layup before Citron sank a clutch and-1 layup to grow Washington's lead to nine with 3:49 remaining. The Aces didn't go down easily. Jackie Young and Dana Evans embarked on a 7-0 run to make it a 68-66 Mystics lead with two minutes to play as Michelob ULTRA Arena came alive. Citron, like she'd done all night, silenced the crowd once more with a clutch 3-pointer to give Washington some breathing room before Melbourne sank 1-of-2 free throws for a 72-66 advantage. Advertisement Young drilled a pair of free throws before grabbing a steal and drilling a layup to trim the deficit to just two. An ensuing Mystics shot-clock violation gave Las Vegas a chance to tie or take the lead with 15.2 seconds remaining. With the game on the line, Young delivered to knot the game at 72. With 7.2 seconds remaining, Las Vegas' Kiah Stokes was called for a shooting foul, which coach Becky Hammon swiftly challenged. The call was overturned to a clean block and Las Vegas gained possession with a chance to win the game. Jewell Lloyd drilled a game-winning 3-pointer with 2.3 seconds left as Las Vegas stole one at home and handed Washington its second-consecutive loss.
