KUANTAN: A 58-year-old mechanic from Rompin lost RM220,000 of his savings after falling victim to a "love scam" syndicate he encountered on Facebook.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the man got to know a woman, who claimed to be from Japan, in April.
"A month into their online relationship, the woman told him that a parcel addressed to her had been sent from Turkiye to Japan, but was being withheld at the Turkish immigration office," he said in a statement today.
She then asked him for money to release the parcel, promising double the amount in return once the items were delivered.
The victim, believing the promise, made 50 separate transactions amounting to RM220,000.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
Yahaya advised the public to be cautious when interacting with strangers online, especially on social media.
"Do not be easily deceived. Always verify before making financial transactions, and check phone numbers and bank accounts at https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my," he said.

Social media abuzz with Pahang royal accused of stabbing man in the rear at nightclub
'WHAT could a royal family member be possibly doing in a nightclub'? 'Or is this a typo when it should be a high school literature club. 🙏🏻' Such are the questions playing in the mind of netizens after Malaysiakini reported that the police are investigating a member of the Pahang royal family who allegedly stabbed a man in a Kuantan nightclub last month. Kuantan district police chief Wan Zahari Wan Busu who confirmed receiving a report on the May 8 incident further told the news portal that an arrest has been made to facilitate investigation into the case. However, he declined to confirm whether the royalty mentioned in the report was the individual arrested or whether he was the same individual who was implicated last year in an attack against road construction worker Alias Awang who was allegedly stabbed and shot at. Wan Zahari added that investigations are being conducted under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means. The investigation paper on the case will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor once the probes are completed 'in the near future'. Going by the Malaysiakini report, digital creator JalalMisai (@jllmisai) expressed amazement at the stabbing incident which is said to have stemmed from the 30-year-old victim 'having bumped into the royalty figure twice previously (at a separate entertainment establishment)'. 'The victim was asked (by a friend) to go to a nightclub in Kuantan (to settle the matter) … Upon arriving, the victim handed over RM1,200 as angpow before his head was hit with a glass jug and stabbed in the buttock,' the poster recounted the incident based on a June 5 police report making the rounds on social media. Punca terlanggar je..??🤔 — JalalMisai (@jllmisai) June 13, 2025 'Is this necessary just because of a bump??🤔' The latest incident brings to light the incident of Pahang ruler Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah's 21-year-old nephew Tengku Eddie Akasya Tengku Abd Rahman along with four others having been charged with attacking a construction worker with a knife under Section 324 of the Penal Code on Nov 7 last year. They were charged with committing the offence which caused Alias to be injured on the right thigh at a horse stable in Jalan Teluk Sisek, Kuantan about 12.20am on June 6, 2024. The five pleaded not guilty at the Kuantan Magistrate's Court to the charge of voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous means to the road maintenance worker who was apparently also shot at (but the bullet missed him). Following the incident, Pahang Crown Prince Tengku Mahkota Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah had ordered the police to conduct an immediate, transparent and fair investigation into the case while stressing that 'nobody – even royalty – is above the law'. – June 14, 2025

Protecting kids from harassment starts at home
PETALING JAYA: Parents must be more proactive in protecting their children from sexual harassment threats, says Fadhlina Sidek ( pic ). The Education Minister said obscene online content that targets children must be promptly reported and taken down, following the recent discovery of a social media account featuring pictures of schoolchildren. 'Parents have to play a proactive role at home to teach their children and protect them from sexual harassment. They must ensure that their children's dignity is protected,' she said in a statement yesterday. 'The existence of these pages must be reported immediately and action taken to curb them. 'All educational institutions under the ministry are required to comply with the existing guidelines to address sexual harassment. 'Psychosocial support services must also be continuously strengthened to provide support for students,' Fadhlina said. On a related note, she said the ministry's Reproductive and Social Health Education (PEERS) module would raise awareness of reproductive health among students, teachers and parents. 'The module's teaching period will be extended with the implementation of the 2027 school curriculum,' she said. The existence of a Facebook group that posted photos of schoolchildren was revealed by a digital content creator, who said she found photos of herself and other pupils on the account. The account, which has since been taken down, had 12,000 members and circulated photos of schoolchildren with lewd comments. 'This group is sharing photos of underage kids, including photos of myself when I was still in school. The comments are so disgusting. This is wrong and is a crime,' said the influencer, who goes by the handle Mekyun on Instagram. The content creator had also forwarded all the information on the group to the authorities. Recently, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil had raised concerns about the continued existence of obscene content targeting children online. 'This raises questions about whether current laws and cooperation are enough or if we need a more strategic approach,' he said. Last year, a joint operation between the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission was conducted to track down and put a stop to child exploitation content online. He added that the authorities are expected to add more bite to deal with harmful online content once the Online Safety Act 2024, which was passed in December last year, comes into force soon.
