3000 sign NC500 pledge amid Highland concerns over tourism impact

The organisation behind the promotion of the coastal route introduced the visitor pledge in October last year, and asks visitors to:
leave no trace by disposing of waste responsibly
park only in dedicated parking areas during the day and overnight
prioritise shopping in local businesses
follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code
keep noise levels low
adhere to all road signs and speed limits
drive carefully and considerately and yield to local traffic, especially on single-track roads

Around 93% of people who signed the pledge have taken part in some sort of "extra mile" task.
So far, 13% took part in beach cleans, 12% donated to local foodbanks or local charity boxes, 91% prioritised local businesses and 83% shared responsible travel tips either in person or on social media.
The pledge, developed in consultation with residents and businesses along the route, invites visitors to commit to respectful and sustainable tourism during their visit, helping to address the challenges facing local communities as a result of tourism.

David Richardson, development manager at North Coast 500 Ltd, said: 'It's been really encouraging to see just how many people want to do the right thing. The pledge isn't about rules or restrictions — it's about giving people the opportunity to understand the place they're visiting and how they can help look after it. The early response shows that visitors genuinely care, and that's a really positive foundation to build on.
'We know tourism brings both benefits and challenges, and while there's no single solution, what we're seeing is a willingness from visitors to be part of the answer.

The pledge is supported by a digital platform to provide tourists with educational resources to help them explore the Highlands responsibly.
The NC500 was established more than a decade ago, and while it brings many benefits for businesses on the route, a lot of locals in the Highlands are resentful of its promotion given it has led to dangerous driving and anti-social behaviour.

However, locals on the Isle of Skye were left furious when Vallat and his companions turned the picturesque Cuillin mountain path into their own party venue. The trio are said to have chopped down a silver birch tree and left behind a scorched mess of beer bottles, rubbish, and charred earth. Videos uploaded to the teen creator's page showed the group topless, drinking beer in the water, and boasting about how "cold water was good for their immune system." In an earlier video, Vallat, dressed in a woolly jumper, shared his plans to "survive the next three days" with "Scottish guys," explaining how they intended to "fish, set a fire, and eat sausages." He even posted tips to his followers advising how to "leave no trace" on their next camping adventure. But shocked hiker Adrian Trendall encountered the aftermath on Wednesday morning while visiting the range to climb the Cuillin Ridge of Sgùrr Dearg. He confronted hungover Vallat the next morning about the disgusting mess surrounding their tents. Disturbing photographs shared on the Cuillin Facebook group revealed the destruction left behind by the group, including packed raw uncooked chicken, broken camping equipment, and rubbish scattered for metres across the path. Adrian described the scene to stunned island residents: "The tents were surrounded by a mass of rubbish. Locals fury at NC500 pranksters "Drinks bottles were strewn everywhere, packets of raw chicken left open and abandoned, and bags of rubbish torn apart by the wind, spreading their contents far and wide. "Perhaps worst of all was the fire the campers had attempted to light. "A silver birch tree had been hacked down and dragged to the tents, but its fresh, sappy wood proved incombustible. "There aren't many trees in and around the Cuillin, so it was particularly upsetting to see the blackened remnants of what had been a healthy tree." After confronting the group, Adrian recounted: 'He thought he had the gift of the gab. "But what came out was more like the gift of the gob. Nature enthusiasts condemned the irresponsible behaviour of the influencer. One remarked: "Pure scum." Another commented: "The only reason they cleared it up, Adrian, is because they were caught." A third added: "Even documenting the hacking down of this tree. "Absolutely horrific behaviour from someone with a platform and following." A fourth wrote: "Uneducated, self-centred cretins only concerned about their own needs—heat, coffee, Insta material... Well done for dragging them out of their pit and giving them what for." The Cuillin is protected under various designations, including a Special Protection Area (SPA) and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). It is also part of the Cuillin Hills National Scenic Area. The Scottish Government has been urged to introduce a new tax for motorhomes and campervans amid concerns over the popularity of the vehicles clogging up the roads Motorhome and campervan owners could face a "mixed bag" of new rules, including a potential tax, according to experts. The Scottish Government is facing mounting pressure after it was revealed there are no current plans to introduce charges for motorhomes and campervans touring the North Coast 500 (NC500), one of the UK's most popular driving routes. Thousands of holidaymakers embark on the very scenic 500-mile loop from Inverness each year, leading to calls for a campervan tax to help manage overcrowding. However, Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes confirmed this week that there are "no plans to introduce a campervan tax". ‌ Labour Party politician Shaun Fraser, who is standing to be MSP for Inverness and Nairn, has backed exploring "options attached to campervans, including number plate recognition to charge visiting campervans using Highland roads." ‌ "Our roads cannot cope with this. It is a mixed blessing," Fraser said. Ms Forbes suggested that local councils could consider a discretionary approach, encouraging visitors to make a financial contribution towards maintaining the route. This could ensure the NC500 continues to be enjoyed by motorhome and campervan enthusiasts for years to come, she added. SNP MSP Emma Roddick has voiced her support for the inclusion of campervan tourists in any wider tourist tax, arguing that it's "fair" for drivers to contribute to the "preservation and maintenance of the areas they enjoy so much," reports Birmingham Live. Highland Council could "consider alternative approaches" through their visitor levy plans, according to Ms Forbes. She explained: "There are only five roads in and out of the Highlands, so it can't be that difficult to figure out who is travelling in, who is travelling out, and how you can work with people at that point to look at whether a financial contribution can be made."

The vessel has been out of action since a catalogue of issues was identified when it went in for its annual overhaul in January 2024. It was due to return to service on Thursday but after it undocked 24 hours late due to "poor conditions", it is now due to begin a phased return on Friday. This phased return will continue through Saturday and Sunday, with a return to a full timetable on Monday, June 15. CalMac said: "There will be a delay to the phased return of the vessel. MV Caledonian Isles will begin a phased return on Friday, June 13 and continue through Saturday, June 14, with a full return to timetable on Sunday, June 15." READ MORE: 'Multi-billion-pound' renovation for Faslane nuclear base on Clyde The MV Isle of Arran replaced the Caley Isles on the Ardrossan route, but moved on in January this year, leaving the town without a ferry service since that date. The MV Glen Sannox has been operating from Troon – alongside the MV Alfred – because it is too large to dock at Ardrossan. Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop announced earlier this year that she had asked officials to look at the potential purchase of the harbour in North Ayrshire. The Ardrossan Harbour Task Force met for the first time in a year in April after which the Scottish Government said it remained committed to trying to purchase the site. But campaigners fighting to save Ardrossan Harbour told The National last month they fear negotiations to bring the site into public ownership are 'far from complete' after meeting with CMAL, Transport Scotland, CalMac and Peel Ports. The Ardrossan port requires a costly berth realignment in order to accommodate the new Glen Sannox – which entered service to Arran in January – and the Glen Rosa – which is now not due to be delivered until 2026. READ MORE: 3000 sign NC500 pledge amid Highland concerns over tourism impact The Ardrossan Harbour Project – to develop the port and make it suitable for the Glen Sannox and Glen Rosa – was given the go-ahead way back in 2018 by then transport minister Humza Yousaf, but the project was paused in 2023 and a fresh business case has never emerged. With ferries only going in and out of Troon for the past few months, residents in Arran have been struggling to get to medical appointments at Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock, which is easily reachable by bus from Ardrossan but much more challenging to get to from Troon. Foot passengers have also had to board a shuttle at the Troon port if they want to get to the town's railway station and travel on towards Glasgow, with Troon station being around a 25-minute walk away. Ardrossan train station, on the other hand, is right by the port and the timings of service line-up with the ferry timetable. Transport Scotland said it will update Parliament and the community once there is progress to report on the potential purchase.
