American Athletic Conference taking its postseason basketball tourneys to Birmingham and Tampa
IRVING, Texas (AP) — The American Athletic Conference is taking its postseason basketball tournaments to two new venues for the league after a five-year run in Texas.
The AAC announced Friday that both men's and women's tournaments will be played next year at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. The Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida, will host in 2027 and 2028.
AAC athletic directors approved the venues and cities that will be first-time hosts for those league tournaments. All four finalists for the new sites were home cities of AAC members, with the other finalists being past host Memphis, Tennessee, and Wichita, Kansas.
The basketball tournaments were held the past five seasons at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. That venue was also set to host the AAC men in 2020 before conference tournaments and the NCAA Tournament were canceled that year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
'We are thrilled to bring our basketball championships to Birmingham and Tampa,' AAC Commissioner Tim Pernetti said. 'Our top priority when we began this bid process was to deliver the best possible experience for our student-athletes. The ability of Birmingham and Tampa to accommodate both championships and the year-round support that we will receive from their respective local committees will help to make these events an unforgettable experience for our players and fans.'

What we know "Under current statute, the only offense a judge can deny bond flat out, is capital murder and that's only if the state is seeking the death penalty," said Andy Kahan with Crime Stoppers. Voters can change that come Election Day in November. If approved, the state's constitution will change giving judges more discretion. They could deny bond for any violent charge for public safety concerns. Also, magistrates can no longer grant personal recognizance bonds, or get out-of-jail free cards, to defendants charged with violent felonies. "If you're on parole, and you're charged with a felony, you will no longer be able to get a PR bond," Kahan said. The backstory In November 2023, we told you about Dominque Menefee. Even though he was on parole, he was given a PR bond for a felony drug charge. Six days after he walked out of jail, police say Menefee murdered 34-year-old Sherniqua Banks. Several Breaking Bond reports were viewed and shared during committee hearings. Another big change, no PR bonds for defendants charged with felon in possession of a weapon, terroristic threats, and drug cases involving fentanyl. "Little did we know when we first started doing this segment in November of 2020, we would play a pivotal role and Breaking Bond has become a catalyst for change," Kahan said. After all, it was Bryant who lashed out at Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones after a loss to the 49ers in late October. His gift for gab has gotten him into hot water again on Monday. Bryant took to social media to post puzzling remarks regarding the acknowledgment of Pride Month, per Josh Sanchez of Sports Illustrated. He took issue with the ML Football League, who posted on X acknowledging Pride Month and saying things such as 'Football is gay' and 'Football is for everyone.' 'These are wild statements to make,' Bryant posted on X. 'Excuse my silliness. I'm going to proudly tell my boys football is none of these things. I have nothing against Gays, but this is far from right.' He then followed up with a subsequent post that included much harsher commentary. 'It's gay players in the NFL, but forcing it in people's faces, especially children, can send the wrong message,' he said. 'Football is a real community, like the gay community. Imagine telling gays they have to advocate for straight people. They probably would have a problem.' Pride Month is a celebration of the history and visibility of the LGBTQ+ community. It is held in June to commemorate the historic Stonewall Riots on June 28, 1969, which marked the launch of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. The NFL has acknowledged Pride Month since 2017. However, this is not the first time Bryant has said something off-putting. During his tenure with the Cowboys, Bryant has become one of the most outspoken players. Often saying and doing things that have gotten him in hot water. In 2012, he was involved in a physical altercation with his mother, Angela, that was caught on tape by TMZ. She said he hit her with a baseball cap and tore her shirt as she was trying to break up a scuffle between Bryant and her brother. At one point, Bryant owned a capuchin monkey. That invoked the ire of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). He called former Cowboys teammate Sean Lee a 'snake' and called out the team's playcalling. Last November, Bryant trolled Jay Z after a Cowboys loss to the Washington Commanders. All of this came amid rumors that Jay-Z would become an owner of the Commanders. At virtually every turn, Bryant has something to say.
