FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Iqraam Rayners gives Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 win over Ulsan HD

The Hindu10 hours ago

Iqraam Rayners scored from point-blank range in the 36th minute to give Mamelodi Sundowns a 1-0 win over Ulsan HD after an hour-long weather delay in the group stage of the Club World Cup on Tuesday night.
Mamelodi was aggressive on offence in front of a crowd of fewer than 1,000 fans at the 25,500-person capacity Inter&Co stadium, but the South Korean club had the first real scoring chance of the game on a counterattack when Erick Farias missed the one-time shot just over the crossbar.
The relentless possession control from the South African team became too much for Ulsan, and Rayners converted on a soft touch into the bottom-right corner.

Ulsan nearly scored the equaliser in the 80th minute as winger Matías Lacava took a dangerous shot directly in front of the Mamelodi goal, but goalkeeper Ronwen Williams stifled the chance.
With the win, Mamelodi sits atop the Group F standings with three points. Ulsan is now last in the group with zero points. Mamelodi and Ulsan continue their group stage campaigns on June 21 with matches against Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense, respectively.
Mamelodi boss Miguel Cardoso said: 'It's not easy to achieve victories. Today, I think we released a lot of energy in the right way.'
Ulsan manager Kim Pan-gon believed his players performed to the best of their abilities. 'We couldn't garner the victory or score any points. Even though we didn't accomplish all the objectives, I believe we had a satisfactory result. Under very difficult conditions, our players did their best.'

Bernardo Silva named Manchester City captain in what could be his farewell season

New Delhi: Pep Guardiola has appointed Bernardo Silva as Manchester City's new captain ahead of what might be the Portuguese midfielder's final season at the club. Silva, who joined City from AS Monaco in 2017, has become one of the most consistent and creative forces in the Guardiola era. With his contract running until 2026, the 29-year-old has hinted that this could be his final chapter in Manchester, with a potential return to his boyhood club Benfica on the cards. 'I know what I'm going to do, but it's not the time to talk about that,' Silva told reporters. 'I'm very focused on my season. I'm very focused on performing well for Man City. When the time is due, I will talk about it.' He added, 'I have one year on my contract so obviously I can leave next season. I've had options in the past, like last year, and this year my option is to stay at Man City.' Alongside Silva, Guardiola also appointed Rodri, Ruben Dias, and Erling Haaland as vice-captains — a move that emphasizes both experience and the future of the squad. The City boss was clear about why he broke from tradition. 'For the first time in my career, I decided who would be my captain,' Guardiola said. 'I didn't like what happened last season. I decided this season. Sometimes I want to be the boss and this time, I made the decision.' The shake-up in leadership comes after a turbulent season where Kyle Walker was named captain only to be loaned out to AC Milan midway through the campaign. Although the English full-back returned to the squad after his loan, he is not part of the squad which is in the USA for the FIFA Club World Cup. Guardiola hinted that the leadership group might evolve further, saying, 'At the end of this World Cup, maybe we will choose one or two more.' Among the new vice-captains, Guardiola placed special emphasis on Haaland's leadership potential. 'Erling Haaland is so young, but he has to start to learn what it means to be a captain,' he said. 'Because he will be here hopefully many, many years. Sooner or later, he will take that position as the first one.' Manchester City are now gearing up for their FIFA Club World Cup campaign, which kicks off on June 18.

Kisik Lee replaces Baek Woong Ki as India's new recurve archery head coach

New Delhi [India], June 18 (ANI): Republic of Korea's Kisik Lee is set to be the new head coach of India's national recurve archery team as part of the team's preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The South Korean will be replacing his compatriot Baek Woong Ki, who stepped down from the role of India's recurve archery coach after being denied accreditation for the Paris Olympics 2024, as per The 67-year-old Kisik Lee is expected to assume his role as the new head coach of the Indian recurve archery team in August or September. He will work across senior and junior recurve setups, with an eye on ending India's search for an Olympic medal in archery at LA 2028. Despite being a regular fixture in archery competitions at the Olympics, Indian archers are yet to get a feel of the podium at the Summer Games. Kisik Lee is expected to operate between New Delhi and the regional training centre in Sonepat. The final contract, however, is yet to be signed. 'My job is to train the athletes and the coaches - and the archers show good results in the process,' Kisik Lee, who was named Coach of the Year by the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee in 2019, told World Archery as quoted by 'All his demands have been accepted. He will have full freedom to execute his plans,' said Archery Association of India (AAI) treasurer Joris Paulose Ummacheril. Kisik Lee boasts a rich coaching resume with experience of mentoring top archers for over three decades. After starting his international coaching career with the South Korean team, he guided Australian archers to two Olympic medals - Simon Fairweather's gold at Sydney 2000 and Tim Cuddihy's bronze at Athens 2004. The Korean also enjoyed substantial success as the head coach of the USA recurve archery team between 2006 and 2024. During his tenure, the American archers won over 300 World Cup medals - almost half of them gold - three Olympic medals and multiple world titles across disciplines. Lee notably shaped five-time Olympic medallist and 2019 recurve world champion Brady Ellison's rise into one of the sport's most accomplished archers. (ANI)
