Nearly 90% of people calling Samaritans have suffered mental health challenges

Almost nine out of 10 (88%) people who called Samaritans experienced mental health challenges, and were reaching out when other services were not available, the charity has said.
Releasing a report on its work last year, Samaritans said it continued to act as a lifeline for many struggling to cope as it answered 50 calls an hour in 2024.
Its executive director Sarah O'Toole said its vision is that fewer people die by suicide and its volunteers create a safe space for 'human connection that can often be life saving'. 'In the quiet moments of human struggle, a listening ear can be the difference between despair and hope,' she said.
It said it responds to 1,200 contacts daily, which come via calls, emails, face-to-face and prison support. Often people can raise multiple issues they are having in one conversation.
A survey of callers, conducted by University College Cork, found that over half (50.1%) of people called with a mental health concern while a similar proportion (48.4%) had problems with their family or in relationships.
Over one third of people (37.2%) rang with suicidal thoughts while similar numbers called due to a mental health crisis (37%) or loneliness (34.7%).

The report added: 'More than one-third (37.4%) have experienced abuse in their lives, while a similar number (33.1%) are living with chronic physical ailments that compound their emotional distress.'
Data from Samaritans showed that emotional support calls lasted an average of 28 minutes while it had 6,800 calls diverted to its service from five other helplines when they are closed.
The vast majority of those who reached out reported that the service provided a safe space for them, that they were genuinely listened to, and felt supported.
The report delves into personal testimonies of those who had reached out, including one caller who said they 'probably wouldn't be standing here today only for them'.
Another said: "It was literally like a hand came out and dragged me back… It was phenomenal, really phenomenal."
The research also identified a group of callers who sometimes required additional supports within the service. It said that callers discussing financial difficulties, bullying/harassment situations, or self-harm reported slightly lower satisfaction rates.
In terms of its recommendations going forward, it called on the Government to prioritise the creation of a National Loneliness Strategy along with mechanisms to assess its impact.
Furthermore, it called for big tech firms to ensure the wellbeing of content moderators through transparent reporting and comprehensive mental health support standards, including for contractors.
Minister for mental health Mary Butler paid tribute to Samaritans and its volunteers in response to this data. She added that the Department of Health is working with stakeholders including Samaritans to develop the next policy to reduce suicide in Ireland and she expects to bring it to Government for approval towards the end of this year.

Irish hospitals treated over 50,000 people for "self-harm" injuries in a four-year period between 2020-2023, the latest data has revealed. The figures were released by the National Self-Harm Registry Ireland in reply to a Dail question from the Laois/Offaly Independent TD Carol Nolan. It records and reports information about self-harm presentations to hospital emergency departments across the country and is operated by the National Suicide Research Foundation. A total of 12,553 people went to hospital with self-harm injuries in 2020,12,661 in 2021, 12,705 in 2022 and 12,792 in 2023. The figures for last year and the first five months of this year are not available yet. Reacting to the figures, the Junior Health Minister with responsibility for mental health services Mary Butler said: "Broadly speaking, self-harm rates are stable year on year and there has been a decline in recent years. "Recently published data from the National Suicide Research Foundation Self-Harm Registry highlights that between 2010 and 2023 self-harm rates decreased by 12 per cent. "While there is much more to be done, it is reassuring that the rate did not increase across 2022 and 2023 and we now know that self-harm rates did not increase during the Covid-19 pandemic. "The peak self-harm rate recorded for adolescent girls aged 15-19 years in 2021 has decreased in 2022 and 2023 which is positive. "However, self-harm rates in younger female adolescents are continuing to rise highlighting the need to prioritise mental health supports and targeted interventions for young people and their parents." Deputy Nolan branded the data as "alarming" and claimed it doesn't reflect the true number of self-harm instances which took place at home during the pandemic. She said: "There is a serious need for more mental health support and targeted interventions for young people and their parents, and that is something I will continue to advocate for. "We need to make sure that adolescents have access to CAMS services and that there are professionals there to help them and support them in their recovery." According to the last published figures; 504 died in 2020, 512 people died in Ireland from suicide in 2021 and 436 in 2022. These are among one of the highest rates in Europe. Eight out of 10 suicide deaths in Ireland are male. Research by Trinity College last year claimed that the suicide rate in Ireland is being underestimated by 20 to 25 per cent because the burden of proof for a registered suicide in Ireland is higher than other countries. Seven in every 10 people who took their own lives in 2020 were 35 years and older.

Emergency service workers fought to save the life of the 24-year-old who collapsed 'seconds from the finish line' on St Patrick's Street. She was a graduate of University College Cork. She was also a former student of St Angela's College on Patrick's Hill in the city. Ms Cassidy was a keen swimmer who participated in numerous competitions over the years both in Ireland and overseas. She joined Dolphin Swimming Club in Mayfield on the northside of Cork city at the age of nine. She competed with distinction on behalf of her club, Munster and Ireland. She also broke a large number of club records for Dolphin where she was a former 'Swimmer of the Year' and team captain. Emergency services attended the scene and Ms Cassidy was taken to Cork University Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Christine O'Donoghue, from Blarney, Co Cork, was waiting for her daughter Shannon (26) to finish the half marathon, when she realised an emergency was taking place. 'The finish line is near Penneys,' Ms O'Donoghue said. 'My daughter's friend was tracking her on an app and we knew she was near the finish. But the next thing all we could hear was one of the medical team shouting 'AED, AED [Automated External Defibrillator].' They needed a defibrillator. 'The medical team dealt with it amazingly. I could see them all running but not in a panicked way. And the ambulance came within less than five minutes. 'A steward guided the runners to the other side of the road. We were in shock. My daughter then finished the race 10 minutes later. I started bawling when I saw her coming. 'But then I thought another mother was probably standing, waiting for her daughter to reach the finish line.' Ms O'Donoghue said it was heartbreaking that an event where 'such humanity' had been on show, with runners and the crowd supporting each other, that a tragedy would then unfold. Cork city Green Party councillor Oliver Moran, a participant in the half marathon, said: 'It's tragic news to hear after an event that was so heartwarming in other respects. The day was beautiful and the residents and volunteers who came out to support the participants were wonderful. 'Hearing the news emerge after the race finish, when we should all be cheering together, was so saddening. I'm sure the thoughts of everyone who took part alongside the woman are with her friends and family now. 'Just yesterday, I attended a launch of new equipment for the St John's Ambulance with two councillor colleagues, who were also running in the marathon. It was a reminder then about the role those services play in an event like this and I understand the young woman was treated at the finish line by emergency services.' Over 11,000 runners participated in the full Cork City Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K events.
