EBT outage this weekend due to vendor change
BOSTON (WWLP) – The Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) will be conducting maintenance on the EBT system, impacting about 1.1 million people receiving SNAP benefits statewide.
According to DTA, , there will be a full EBT outage from 11:00 p.m. Saturday, April 26, until midday Sunday, April 27. During this time, Massachusetts EBT cardholders will not be able to use their EBT cards for food and cash purchases or cash withdrawals.

People using EBT should plan by making purchases and cash withdrawals before 11:00 p.m. on Saturday.
The state has contracted with Fidelity Information Services (FIS) to be the new EBT vendor. DTA will share real-time updates when the system goes offline and when clients can use their EBT cards again on its webpages, mass.gov/DTA and mass.gov/EBT, and social media pages.
DTA said it has contacted recipients with mailed notices, texts, and email to help them prepare. After the outage, clients' EBT cards will work normally and clients do not need to do anything.
Clients will also still be able to use DTA Connect to view or update their case. The phone number on the back of the EBT card (used to call for information and questions about EBT cards) will remain the same.

The third annual Family Expo was held by Springfield Public Schools inside the MassMutual Center. The second floor was filled with over 100 organizations, with live entertainment and artwork from the students in the district. Every family also got the chance to complete exit surveys to give feedback about the event and the district. Those surveys led to raffle prizes like PlayStations and grills. Flags half-staff to honor Massachusetts airman killed during World War II
BOSTON (WWLP) – Governor Maura Healey has ordered all U.S. and Massachusetts flags to be lowered to half-staff on Saturday. The order was issued to honor Staff Sergeant Loring E. Lord of Somerville, who served in the U.S. Army Air Forces 642d Bombardment Squadron, 409th Bombardment Group, 9th Bombardment Division, 9th Air Force, during World War II. Lord was a gunner aboard an A-26B 'Invader', when his aircraft was hit by heavy anti-aircraft fire during a bombardment mission to Germany in March 1945. WWII bomber crash left 11 dead and 'non-recoverable.' 4 are finally coming home Those aboard the aircraft were buried in a cemetery in Germany. The remains were later discovered in 2018 and taken to a laboratory for analysis and identification. Lord's remains were identified in September 2024, according to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. Loring was born in Somerville in 1916 and enlisted in the Army Air Forces during World War II. His remains were returned to Massachusetts on May 29th. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett. American flags and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts flags are ordered to be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Saturday in his honor. Missouri begins issuing summer food aid for kids
Most eligible kids will receive the benefits automatically and won't need to apply, but those who do need to apply must do so by Aug. 31 (USDA photo). Missouri has begun issuing federal food benefits that could reach 475,000 kids this summer. The first batch of Missouri's summer food benefits for children were issued on Thursday night, a spokesperson for the Department of Social Services told The Independent Friday. Each eligible child will receive a one-time benefit of $120, loaded onto a card that can be used like a debit card to buy groceries. The program is designed to help low-income families pay for food during summer months. States pay 50% of the administrative costs and the federal government pays 100% of the benefits. It's part of a permanent federal program in its second year of existence called Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer, or SUN Bucks. The program aims to help kids who receive subsidized school meals avoid a summer drop-off in nutrition. The state in years past has struggled to get the benefits out to cover the summer months. Last year they didn't begin going out until September, due to technical issues, the state said at the time. Food security advocates in the state were relieved when Missouri opted into the program after weighing factors like technology issues and staffing. There were 11 Republican-led states that opted not to offer the program this year, and a 12th, Oklahoma, will offer it only to tribal nations. Most eligible families in Missouri will receive the benefits automatically. The following groups of kids are automatically eligible, and their families will not need to apply for benefits: Students who are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch during the school year, Households already enrolled in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or temporary assistance, And children between ages 7 and 17 in foster care, who are experiencing homelessness or are migrants. Those benefits will be issued on an existing card if the family is enrolled in SNAP benefits or temporary assistance, or on a new mailed card if they are not. Families who need a new EBT card can request one by phone or the ebtEDGE mobile app. Families who are not automatically eligible must submit an application online by Aug. 31. The state's eligibility navigator will tell families whether they must apply. Benefits will expire 122 days after they are issued, regardless of usage, so families must act quickly once the benefits are distributed. They should also keep the cards for next summer's program, the state's website advises. An estimated 475,000 Missouri kids could receive the benefits, according to a letter to the state from the federal Food and Nutrition Service earlier this year.
