Google sues LATAM Airlines in U.S. over Brazilian YouTube video dispute

The Hindu20 hours ago

Google sued Chile-based LATAM Airlines in U.S. federal court on Thursday, seeking a declaration that Brazilian courts cannot force the tech giant to take down a YouTube video in the U.S. that accused a LATAM employee of sexually abusing a child.
Alphabet's Google, which owns YouTube, said in the lawsuit that LATAM was attempting to "make an end-run" around protections for free speech under the U.S. Constitution by suing in Brazil to force the video's removal worldwide.
"LATAM has not received any official communication about the court case," the company told Reuters.
Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda said in a statement that the company has "long supported the legal principle that courts in a country have jurisdiction over content available in that country, but not over what content should be available in other countries."
Right-wing social media companies Trump Media and Rumble filed a similar lawsuit in Florida in February against a Brazilian judge who had ordered them to remove the U.S.-based accounts of a leading supporter of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. A federal judge decided in the case that the companies were not required to comply with the order in the United States.
According to Google's lawsuit filed in San Jose, California, U.S. citizen and Florida resident Raymond Moreira posted two YouTube videos in 2018 of his 6-year-old son outlining allegations of sexual abuse that the child said he experienced from a LATAM employee while traveling as an unaccompanied minor.
Moreira sued LATAM in Florida in 2020 over the alleged abuse, which led to a confidential settlement.
LATAM sued Google in Brazil in 2018 seeking an order to remove the video from YouTube. Brazil's highest court is set to consider next week whether it has the authority to order Google to take down the video worldwide.
Google asked the court in California on Thursday to declare that LATAM cannot force the tech giant to remove the video in the United States.
Canada's Supreme Court upheld an order for Google to remove some search results worldwide in a separate case in 2018. A California judge halted that order's U.S. enforcement in 2017.

2 held for killing Punjab social media influencer

Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of YouTuber Kanchan Kumari, alias Kamal Kaur, Bathinda police Friday said. A third accused, who is also the main conspirator and who claimed 'moral responsibility' of the murder, is absconding, they said. Kaur's decomposed body was found Wednesday evening in an abandoned car in the parking area of Adesh University in Bathinda, three days after she left her house to attend a promotional event, but later went missing. Senior SP Amneet Kondal identified the arrested accused as Jaspreet Singh (32) of Mehron village in Moga and Nimratjit Singh (21) of Patti in Tarn Taran. Amritpal Singh Mehron, also from Mehron village, and a self-styled Sikh radical leader, is absconding, the SSP said. 'A SUV used in the crime has been recovered. Amritpal and Nimratjit have two and one FIRs pending against them, respectively, registered at Amritsar and Dhanaula police stations,' SSP told the media. During the preliminary probe, the arrested men said they killed her for uploading 'immoral and vulgar content that hurt the community's sentiments'. Sources said the accused also wanted her to remove the surname 'Kaur' from her social media handles. The 30-year-old influencer, had an account under the name 'Kamal Kaur Bhabhi' on Instagram with 3.87 lakh followers. She operated a YouTube channel called 'Funny Bhabhi TV,' which had 2.7 lakh subscribers and another account on facebook with 7.7 lakh followers. According to the police, Kaur's mother, Girja Devi, informed them that on the night of June 7, Amritpal visited their home in Ludhiana on the pretext of a business meeting and invited Kaur to travel to Bathinda for a paid promotional event. Amritpal allegedly returned on June 8, but Kaur refused. On June 9, Girija Devi told the police, Jaspreet and Nimratjit came to their home, after which Kaur left with them. Girja Devi told the police that after 11 pm on June 9, she lost all contact with her daughter. According to the police, at around 1 am on June 10, Jaspreet and Nimratjit allegedly drove Kaur to a deserted location where they strangulated her. The accused then placed the body in Kaur's car and Jaspreet drove it to the parking lot at around 5.30 am on June 10. He parked the car and fled with Nimratjit.

Cutting-edge assistive devices galore at disability expo

Chennai: Navigate differently using assistive devices and breakthrough tech solutions — this is what the Tech4All 2025 showcased for two days in the city through lived experiences. The two-day expo of innovation designed for persons with disabilities (PwD) was not an exhibition but a conversation. For individuals with disabilities were directly involved in testing new tools, sharing feedback, and highlighting their specific needs. Several companies, including startups from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, participated in the expo at Kalaivanar Arangam, displaying advanced technologies aimed at supporting people with disabilities. Around 1,500 people, 60% of whom were persons with disabilities, had registered for the event. Attendees were able to try out demonstrations of artificial limbs, 360-degree VR videos designed especially for children with autism and mental challenges, AI-powered glasses, and electric wheelchair bikes. "We are glad that the govt has organised an exclusive expo for the PwD community, and we were able to experience many advanced technologies. I came across motorised wheelchair bikes and tried them—they were helpful, comfortable, and surprisingly affordable compared to market rates. These devices are also quite advanced. We saw various technologies designed for different types of disabilities," said M Selvam, a wheelchair user. Students from schools for children with disabilities also visited the exhibition over the two days. They explored games specifically developed for visually impaired and autistic children. The students gained insights into the available facilities and shared their feedback on the stalls based on their experiences. Many parents and caregivers placed orders for devices, particularly motorised bikes, games, sensor-enabled artificial limbs, and spinal cord injury support devices. A Mumbai-based company, Robo Bionics, showcased a bionic arm and hand with a sense of human touch. According to co-founder Anil Nair, the device functions with the help of sensors and has already benefited at least 60 individuals across the country.
