Whatcom County teachers receive educational excellence award, $5k prize
Two Whatcom County teachers were recognized this month for their commitment to education and their students.
The Brown & Brown Excellence in Education Award Program honored Squalicum High School teacher Riley Liddle and Lynden Christian High School teacher Dave Tjoelker with Educator of the Year awards and $5,000 prizes.
The goal of the award program is to 'recognize the critical role educators play in our state's public & private schools,' according to Brown & Brown's website.
Students, parents and school staff members nominated teachers for the award. A local judging panel selected Liddle and Tjoelker.
'Excellence and education are so important to us,' said Alex Bogaard, president of the Seattle and Lynden offices of Brown & Brown Insurance Services. 'We're grateful for all of the dedicated teachers in our community and congratulations to the finalists for the Brown & Brown Excellence in Education Awards.'
Liddle has worked as a career and technical education teacher for the last eight years at Squalicum High School in Bellingham. He received multiple nominations from students and staff members.
Liddle was recognized as a finalist for the same award last year.
Liddle is 'a truly exceptional educator whose dedication and passion for robotics have profoundly impacted his students and the broader educational community,' one nomination said.
Tjoelker teaches at Lynden Christian High School after a significant time teaching at Lynden Christian Middle School.
'He is a teacher who fully invests in his students not only academically but finding out who they are personally and meeting them where their needs are,' one nominating parent said. 'He is one to push the kids to really think about their choices.'
Four other finalists from Whatcom County public schools were honored this year, including:
▪ Cynthia Clark, Blaine Primary School.
▪ Megan Cooley, Silver Beach Elementary School (Bellingham).
▪ Natalie Eining, Irene Reither Elementary School (Meridian).
▪ Angel Lammie, Irene Reither Elementary School (Meridian).
The other private-school finalists included:
▪ Rachel Bootsma, Lynden Christian Elementary School.
▪ Dan Kaemingk, Lynden Christian Middle School.
▪ Emily Kooistra, Lynden Christian Elementary School.
'All of the finalists demonstrate a drive for excellence with compassion for their students,' said Paul Kenner of Brown & Brown's Lynden office. 'We thank these teachers for their amazing contributions to education in our communities.'

Surfer Lily Able honored with newly built lifeguard tower
NORTH KONA, Hawaii (KHON2) — A lifeguard tower now stands at Kohanaiki Beach Park, a popular North Kona surf spot known as 'Pine Trees.' But for one family, this structure is more than just a safety upgrade — it's a tribute to a life lost too soon. 10 new lifeguards graduate from Honolulu Ocean Safety Department The Hawai'i Fire Department held a blessing ceremony on June 13 at 3:30 p.m. to commemorate the tower's launch and remember Lily Able, a young surfer who suffered fatal injuries while surfing at Kohanaiki. Her passing deeply impacted the local surf community — and especially her mother, Rachel Able, who became a driving force behind the push for enhanced beach safety. 'This tower is more than infrastructure — it is a commitment to protecting lives and honoring Lily's legacy,' Fire Chief Kazuo Todd said. According to officials, Rachel worked closely with county leaders and the fire department to make the tower a reality. Check out more news from around Hawaii The structure was built with funds allocated through the department's FY2025 budget, with full-time Ocean Safety officers now staffing the tower daily. This lifeguard tower is now the 13th under Hawai'i Fire Department's Ocean Safety program, making Kohanaiki one of the many beaches now covered by trained personnel certified in open-water rescue, advanced first aid, CPR and public education. Mayor Kimo Alameda said the new addition reflects not only the county's ongoing safety efforts but also the determination of families and residents to protect future generations. 'Many community members in North Kona have shared how happy they are to see lifeguard service at Kohanaiki Beach Park,' Alameda said. 'I am grateful for Rachel and everyone at the county who put in the work to make this project a reality.' The ceremony included a traditional Hawaiian blessing led by Dr. Holeka Inaba, followed by remarks from fire and county the Able family and many others, the tower will serve as a visible promise that Lily's memory will help protect others for years to come. Veteran family celebrates new home through Habitat for Humanity
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Habitat for Humanity has provided a fresh start to one family in Vandalia. The Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton hosted a special house dedication on Friday for Navy veteran Len and his family. The family of four was previously living in a small, two-bedroom rental. Through Habitat for Humanity's Veterans Build, Len, his wife Alicia and their two kids will get to live in a much more spacious house. Habitat offers zero percent interest mortgages while requiring potential homeowners to complete homeownership classes and 275 sweat-equity volunteer hours to quality for their new home. Through it all, Len says the organization went above and beyond to help his family succeed. 'When I look back on everything this program has provided for us, it's totally unbelievable,' said Len, veteran, new homeowner. 'All the things they taught us, all the things that they actually helped us through. They never left our side when we had dark moments, and they supported us all the way.' Len and Alicia say they discovered the Habitat for Humanity program by chance, and are grateful for the opportunity. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. A special recognition ceremony was held on Friday at the City Administration Building on South Nevada Avenue. The event had a presentation of the Spirit of Colorado Springs Flag Day Awards to two distinguished honorees.
