Coco Gauff loses to Wang Xinyu in Berlin in her first match since French Open title

BERLIN (AP) — Newly crowned French Open champion Coco Gauff was stunned on her return to action Thursday, losing to Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu 6-3, 6-3 at the Berlin Open.
The second-ranked Gauff, who won at Roland-Garros less than two weeks ago for her second Grand Slam title, amassed 25 unforced errors and seven double faults in her loss to Wang.
Gauff had a bye to the second round at the grass-court tournament, a warmup for Wimbledon.
Wang, ranked No. 49, said she would have been pleased just with the first set, considering the level of her opponent.
'After I won the first set, I just told myself 'OK let's take a minute and enjoy this, I'm playing the French Open champion, and I won the first set,'' she said in her on-court interview.
'No matter how the second and third go, I was like, 'OK let's just enjoy it for a second.' I'm really happy with how I played today. I was serving good and putting a lot of pressure on the return, especially second-serve return.'

Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) — A depleted New York Mets' rotation could see right-hander Justin Hagenman make his first start of the season on Friday at Philadelphia. Perhaps of more significance, the Mets debut for right-hander Frankie Montas could soon follow. The Mets on Thursday recalled Hagenman and right-handed reliever Dedniel Nunez from Triple-A Syracuse and optioned right-hander Ty Adcock to Syracuse. Right-hander Max Kranick was also placed on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow strain. Hagenman, who gave up one run in 3 1/3 innings in his only appearance for the Mets this season, was with the team for Thursday night's game at Atlanta. Manager Carlos Mendoza said Hagenman could pitch on Friday, either as a starter or in bulk relief behind an opener. Mendoza said Montas, who was placed on the IL with a strained right late on March 24, also may be ready to join the rotation despite allowing eight homers and posting a 12.05 ERA in six minor league rehab games. Montas allowed 30 hits in 18 2/3 innings in his series of rocky rehab outings. 'I mean, I'm not going to lie, you know, he got hit,' Mendoza said of Montas. 'He got hit around, you know? But look, we seen it before where guys in spring training struggle and they get hit around. And once you put him on a big league game under the lights and your game plan, and you make adjustments and they flip the switch. He's had success before at this level.' Montas, 32, signed a $34 million, two-year contract with the Mets in December. Montas missed most of the 2023 season because of shoulder surgery. He was 3-3 with a 4.53 ERA in 11 starts for Milwaukee in 2024. The Mets' rotation needs help. Right-hander Tylor Megill was placed on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday with a right elbow sprain and will miss at least one month. Last week, right-hander Kodai Senga was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right hamstring strain. Mendoza said Kranick, who had a 3.65 ERA, returned to New York on Thursday for an MRI after having continued discomfort in his elbow on Wednesday when he played catch and then tried to throw from the mound. Kranick, 27, was recalled from Syracuse on June 13. The Mets took a five-game losing streak into Thursday night's game. Jordan Spieth withdraws after 13 holes from Travelers with shoulder blade injury
CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — Jordan Spieth was forced to withdraw from the Travelers Championship after 13 holes Thursday when tightness in his shoulder blade reached a point he couldn't swing without pain. Spieth said the injury appeared out of nowhere, perhaps from sleeping on it in a bad position. He noticed it on the range, had his physical trainer work on him before teeing off and it never got any better. He was 5 over for his round, with no birdies, when he informed playing partner Luke Clanton he could not continue and was taken off in a cart. 'I've never withdrawn from an event ever anywhere at any level, so I didn't really know what to do. It just became too much,' Spieth said. "I didn't see it turning around until probably Saturday. These things kind of last an extra day, and no matter what I was going to do, it was just going to be ... I don't know, it's unfortunate. 'I've been doing everything right, and I think it was just very random.' The timing was a blow to Spieth, who got into his first signature event this year without needing to rely on a sponsor exemption. His wife is due to give birth to their third child in a few weeks, and there were no plans to add a tournament before the British Open. Spieth has moved back into the top 50 in the world ranking and the top 40 of the FedEx Cup despite a late start to the season because of surgery on his left wrist last August. He said he felt a tug on both sides of his neck and upper back as he worked through his bag on the range. He stopped the session to get work on it, but as the round began it wasn't getting any better. The next goal was to finish the round because there is no 36-hole cut. 'It's a weird situation with an elevated event and no cut and important points,' he said. 'It's like, 'Well, what's the downside if I can finish, even if it's ugly?' And then I hit my tee shot on 13, and it legitimately really hurt.' Spieth tied for 23rd in the U.S. Open and was on the fringe of contention at the Memorial before he tied for seventh. ___

Messi!' rocking Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the 37-year-old Argentine star's left-footed blast cleared the wall and sailed into the top right corner. Messi's goal serves as a continuation of good form in the calendar year. Though the team has had a slow start, he has 10 goals and seven assists in 12 starts. It felt like a home game for Miami, with an overwhelmingly pink crowd in Atlanta. With Messi's 38th birthday less than a week away, his continued success is a positive sign for fans, including the thousands wearing No. 10 jerseys inside the stadium, that his retirement is still a ways away. The MLS club and two-time European champion Porto were held to scoreless draws in their opening Group A matches. 'Extraordinary,' teammate Marcelo Weigandt said.
