Marseille, Strasbourg win in Ligue 1 to close in on Champions League
Marseille rose to second in Ligue 1 with a 3-2 win against Toulouse on Sunday, while Strasbourg moved into the Champions League spots following a narrow win at Reims.
Superb second-half goals at the Velodrome from Mason Greenwood and Adrien Rabiot lifted Marseille above Monaco, but Roberto De Zerbi's side can no longer dream of catching leaders Paris Saint-Germain who wrapped up the Ligue 1 title on Saturday.
A Gabriel Suazo own-goal put the hosts ahead midway through the first half. Frank Magri headed an equaliser shortly afterwards.
Vincent Sierro scored inside the final 15 minutes to give Toulouse hope but Marseille clung on to win.
Former Manchester United forward Greenwood put Marseille on the path to victory with an unstoppable right-footed drive on 57 minutes.
France international Rabiot then scored what proved to be the decider seven minutes later with a fierce volley from inside the box.
Earlier, Strasbourg won 1-0 at Reims' Stade Auguste-Delaune to claim fourth spot.
A top-four finish for Liam Rosenior's young Strasbourg side would secure them Champions League football for the first time since 1980.
"I have confidence in this squad, they're showing great things," said Rosenior.
"Since the start of the season, we haven't set any limits for them. They'll keep pushing until the end."
Ismael Doucoure's early strike was enough to earn Strasbourg a vital victory at Reims and bring them up to 49 points -- one behind third-placed Monaco.
A top-three finish will ensure direct qualification for the tournament, while the side in fourth will play a qualifying round to reach the league phase.
Two points separate Strasbourg and seventh-placed Lille, with French giants Lyon and Nice in between.
Doucoure was left on his own inside the six-yard box to stroke home from Sebastian Nanasi's corner in the fourth minute.
Reims thought they were level on 20 minutes, but Junya Ito's strike was ruled out for a handball by the Japanese forward.
Prior to touching Ito's hand, the ball was handled by Strasbourg's Mamadou Sarr, however, after a VAR review no penalty was awarded by referee Clement Turpin.
Both sides finished down to 10 men following a scuffle deep into injury time.
The clean sheet extended Strasbourg goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic's impressive record of having conceded only eight league goals since early December.
Defeat for Reims meant Samba Diawara's side slipped to 16th place -- the relegation play-off spot.
Elsewhere, Le Havre escaped the relegation play-off place at the expense of Reims with a 2-0 win away to bottom-of-the-table Montpellier.
Yassine Kechta opened the scoring on three minutes, before Abdoulaye Toure made sure of the three points half-an-hour later.
Saint-Etienne remain mired in the direct relegation zone following a 1-0 loss to Lens.
Rennes lost 1-0 at home to Auxerre following an 89th-minute winner by Jubal.

Sandro Tonali and the tactical tweak that changed the face of Newcastle's season
The 2024–25 season was undeniably one of the best in Newcastle's history. Not only did they clinch their first domestic trophy in 70 years after defeating Liverpool 2–1 to lift the Carabao Cup, but they also secured Champions League qualification for the second time in three years after edging out Aston Villa on goal difference. Advertisement However, heading into the festive period, things were looking very different for Eddie Howe's side. Despite still being in both domestic cups, a resounding 4–2 loss away at Brentford on December 7 left them 12th in the table, with seemingly nothing to play for in the league. But a run of nine straight wins in all competitions — including six in the league — transformed Newcastle's season. Unsurprisingly, it coincided with Sandro Tonali beginning to make his newfound No 6 role, — where he was first deployed against Crystal Palace on November 30 — his own. On the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne, Taylor Payne and George Caulkin discussed how pushing Tonali deeper changed the face of Newcastle's midfield and their season. Taylor: George, after a mixed start to the season, there was a remarkable uptick in form, consistency, attitude and application, and all over the pitch Newcastle seemed to kick into gear. That midfield rejig we touched on earlier was really the springboard for it all wasn't it? George: Yeah it was, and that had actually happened before results turned around, but only only just before they did. It was the 1-1 draw away at Crystal Palace where Tonali had been moved back into that deeper position. It's funny because we talk about it as being a defensive role, but Tonali still manages to run more than anybody else. So that idea of him just sitting in front of the back four, tidying things up and playing the ball simply, that's just not what he does. He's absolutely everywhere, that's the incredible thing about him. But it was such a big deal, and they saw signs in there that perhaps that was the answer. It took another major reset after Brentford away, and we all heard on this podcast how that loss affected Chris. I've never heard of a flatter or more broken Chris before. But then they were fortunate to play against a Leicester team after that who were so naive that day in mid-December, and were battered 4-0. They were precisely the opponents that Newcastle needed. Advertisement Having that week of total reset at the training ground was vital. Howe took all his players aside and tried to explain to them that what was happening wasn't acceptable. And that God forbid if any of the players wanted to leave, the only way they could do that was by playing well for Newcastle. He was also trying to get into their heads by showing them clips of where it was going wrong and starting again. The players themselves had a meeting, and they knew it wasn't right. Then finally when it clicked, they just didn't look back. But that run of games where they got nine wins in a row was extraordinary because it took them to mid-January, and by that time the season was beginning to look very different. Taylor: Steven Levy on X agrees with us, and he said, 'The moment of the season was when Howe saw the light and moved Tonali to play No. 6, everything changed from that point on.' George: I must say that there is this idea that Eddie Howe was reluctant to play Tonali in that position, and I honestly think that's unfair. When Tonali arrived at the start of the previous season, there was talk of Newcastle playing with a sort of double-pivot. The idea was that Tonali and Bruno were interchangeable, where one would go and the other would stay. Whether or not that would have come to fruition, we don't know because it wasn't working seamlessly at that point. But then Tonali was obviously out of the team for a while, so when he came back into the team this season it took him a while to adjust. To play in a position where you're going to end up running more than anybody else, you can't just do that straight away on day one. So it's taken him time to get his match fitness back. And running was one of the very specific things that Howe and his staff worked on with Tonali. There were specific things that the coaches were doing with Tonali to get him up to speed, Chris and I wrote about this earlier in the season. They took apart his running action and started again with it, which made him more efficient and changed his gate. So you're now left with a player who runs more than any other player in the Newcastle team, and more than anyone else in most other Premier League midfields. That has been massively beneficial for Newcastle. But to say that it was down to Eddie Howe to see the light about where he could play, that's only part of it. It's also about the player himself understanding what's being asked of him, and the changes to his technique that were implemented during his time out. So I just think it's slightly more rounded than that, but his impact this season can't be overstated. Michelin to use 50% sustainable materials in 2026 WEC and IMSA tyres
Michelin will introduce a new range of slick tyres for the World Endurance Championship and the IMSA SportsCar Championship next year produced from 50% sustainable materials. The French tyre supplier has surpassed its original target to increase the percentage of the renewable and recycled components of the tyres used in Hypercar in WEC and GTP in IMSA from the 40% announced. Advertisement It presents an increase from the 30% of sustainables that make up the current range of tyres introduced at the start of 2023 in the world championship and the North American series in which Michelin is the sole supplier in the top class. Michelin has confirmed the introduction of the new Pilot Sport Endurance range for 2026 ahead of the start of track action for the Le Mans 24 Hours, the centrepiece round of the WEC, with the Test Day this weekend. The new range marks Michelin's first mass-volume tyre produced with such a high level of recycled and renewable materials. A total of 30,000 units will be produced each year, which contrasts with the low volumes in which tyres with similar levels of sustainables have been made for the MotoE World Cup electric motorcycle series and those used on the Mission H24 hydrogen fuel-cell demonstrators. Advertisement The use of new materials and technologies in the WEC tyres is part of Michelin's drive to introduce tyres made from 100% sustainable materials for the road by 2050. 'At a time when our vehicles need durable equipment, racing lets us go faster and further in transferring technology from track to street. 'That is why we have launched a complete overhaul of our endurance range with a clear objective: to incorporate 50% renewable and recycled materials while increasing overall performance.' Advertisement The new range will, like the existing tyres, incorporate three specifications of slick - soft, medium and hard: Michelin brings two to the regular WEC races with all three being available for Le Mans. The aim was to produce tyres that were equal to the existing range in terms of one-lap performance, but with enhanced warm-up following the ban on tyre warmers at the start of 2023 and improved durability. Michelin has raised the prospect of a reduction in the allocation of tyres for each car over the course of a regular WEC event, which currently stands at four and a half sets or 18 tyres for a six-hour race, and higher multiples of stints on four tyres at Le Mans. Philippe Tramond, motorsport technical director at Michelin, suggested that might be possible for 2027 with the necessary rule change. Advertisement 'We have to understand how this new range will perform and then after that the aim is to reduce the number of tyres each car uses over an event,' he explained. Michel tested 11 new materials defined as renewable or recycled during development of its 2026 tyres and has ended up retaining seven. It also tried 14 what it called 'technical bricks' during development and is using five in the new range. Development of the 2026 WEC and IMSA tyres will conclude with a final test at Watkins Glen at the end of this month after which the specifications will be fixed before production begins in September. Advertisement The tyres will be released to the manufacturers and teams in mid-November at the time of the traditional IMSA sanction test. A new Michelin wet-weather tyre is also under development, but a date for its introduction has not be set while stocks of the existing wet are used up. The new slicks incorporate what Michelin is calling a 'micro velvet effect' that looks like a tread pattern. Michelin sportscar operations manager Pierre Alves said that this has been conceived 'to make the invisible visible'. 'There are new things inside these tyres, so what better way to show it than to have something that is visible?' That is the current end of the lifecycle of the Le Mans Hypercar and LMDh rulesets, though it is looking increasingly certain they will be extended, with an announcement on the cards for Le Mans week.
