Red-hot Wei Chong-Kai Wun one step away from Malaysia Masters glory
NATIONAL men's doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun are just one win away from glory at the Malaysia Masters 2025 after a stunning 21-12, 21-14 semi-final victory over Japan's Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil here today.
The first game began cautiously, with both pairs level at 3-3 before found their rhythm and turned on the style to open up a seven-point lead at 15-8 before romping to a 21-12 win.
The fifth-seeded Malaysians had a shaky start to the second set, trailing 0-2 before they caught fire to storm to an 11-5 lead before a delicate net shot from Kai Wun sealed the deal, sending them into the final with a commanding 21-14 win in just 31 minutes.
This was their first-ever win over the 2021 world champions from Japan, having fallen short in their two previous encounters.
The world number eight Malaysians now have a chance to go one better than their 2023 runner-up finish when they went down fighting 15-21, 24-22, 19-21 to South Korea's Kang Min Hyuk-Seo Seung Jae.
In tomorrow's final, Wei Chong-Kai Wun will face either Malaysian fourth seeds Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik or the top-seeded Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark.
Kai Wun said their aggressive tactical approach was key to denying Hoki-Kobayashi a place in the final.
He said that today's win over another world-class pair, following their 19-21, 21-7, 21-16 quarter-final triumph over world number two and compatriots Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Mohd Rumsani had given them a major confidence boost heading into the final.
Wei Chong, meanwhile, hopes that they can stay focused and carry their red-hot momentum into the title showdown.
'It would be great if we can become champions but what's important is that we must focus on our performance,' he said.
Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah were the last Malaysian men's doubles pair to emerge victorious in the Malaysia Masters back in 2013.

For that, they were rewarded with their first ever Super 1000 final in their careers. Pearly-Thinaah will meet either China's world No. 1 Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning or South Korean world No. 3 Baek Ha Na-Lee So Hee in the title decider tomorrow. Despite playing their fourth consecutive World Tour tournament, the Malaysian duo refused to let weariness get in the way. The 65-minute battle was indeed a testament of the grit and maturity that Pearly-Thinaah are known for. "Words can't describe how happy we are today. At one game down, we didn't want to give up easily," said Thinaah. "Today, it was not just about strategy but mental and physical strength and I am really thankful that Pearly was by my side. She smashed a lot. "We just have to be relaxed and maintain our calm, which gives us strength, in the final tomorrow." Pearly said that there was no particular moment where the tide turned although the Chinese pair had been dominant early in the match. "There were some trick shots and we enjoyed those points." The energy-sapping sequence for Pearly-Thinaah began four weeks ago at the Thailand Open where they captured the Super 500 crown. This was followed by a semi-final appearance at the Malaysia Masters and the duo reached the last eight at the Singapore Open last week. The faster and younger Yi Jing (23) and Xup Min (22) set the pace to run away with a 21-12 win in the first game but Pearly, 25, and Thinaah, 27, began their customary fightback after that and ended the contest with a flourish.

Machucha missed birth of first child to be with Malaysian team ahead of Vietnam clash
Latest Malaysian footballer Imanol Machuca. PETALING JAYA: The country comes first rather than family for mixed heritage footballer Imanol Machuca. The 25-year-old missed the birth of his first born baby boy back in Argentina in order to be with the national football team for the all-important 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifier against Vietnam on Tuesday. His wife Ailen Bernardi, a personal trainer, gave birth at the start of the week but Imanol was already on board the plane on a 30-hour journey from Roldan. "My beautiful baby boy," Machuca announced on his Instagram. And Machuca certainly has all the motivation he needs to help Malaysia end their long winless drought against Vietnam. Machuca, a winger who plays for Velez Sarsfield on loan from Brazilian side Fortaleza, is one of the five Malaysians abroad who joined the national team led by Australian coach Peter Cklamovski earlier this week.
