Tottenham 3 Elfsborg 0: Academy talents shine but Dragusin suffers injury blow

New York Times30-01-2025

A direct route to the Europa League knockout phase secured and three goals for academy graduates.
This was one of Tottenham's better nights compared to recent weeks, with second-half goals from Dane Scarlett, Damola Ajayi and Mikey Moore breaking the resistance of a stubborn Elfsborg side and ensuring a place in the top eight of the league phase.

It wasn't an entirely satisfactory evening, with more injury concerns besetting Ange Postecoglou, but after the awful weekend defeat to Leicester, this represented welcome relief.
We discuss the main talking points.
The fact all three of Tottenham's goals were scored by academy graduates made this apparently routine win feel special for Spurs fans.
Scarlett only came onto the pitch in the 66th minute due to Dragusin suffering a nasty-looking knee injury. With limited defensive options on the bench, Postecoglou retooled the team and threw on Scarlett at centre-forward while Pape Matar Sarr dropped to left-back and Dejan Kulusevski moved to central midfield. It has been a strange month for Scarlett, but he ended up making the crucial intervention.
At the beginning of January, the 20-year-old was struggling for minutes on loan at second-tier side Oxford United. When Spurs recalled him a couple of weeks ago, the plan was to send him back out on loan to another team for regular game time.
Postecoglou could have thrown on 20-year-old striker Will Lankshear, who scored against Galatasaray in November, but he decided to give Scarlett a chance and within five minutes, the gamble had paid off. Kulusevski whipped a cross into the box and Scarlett ghosted in between the two centre-backs before crashing a header past Elfsborg's goalkeeper, Isak Pettersson. The entire stadium started chanting his name in celebration.
The problem for Scarlett is that he was quickly upstaged by his team-mate Ajayi. Ajayi replaced Richarlison with around 10 minutes to go and moved to the right wing. He was making his debut but did not look overawed when he received the ball by the touchline. Instead, Ajayi danced past a couple of defenders, drove towards the box and fired a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Postecoglou grinned with delight, while Djed Spence, who was watching from the bench, put his hands on his head in disbelief. There were only three minutes and 39 seconds between Ajayi coming onto the pitch and scoring.
To cap off a perfect evening, Moore, the crown jewel of Tottenham's young stars, scored his first professional goal deep into stoppage time.
Tottenham have experienced a difficult few weeks, but their young stars put a smile on everybody's faces on Thursday evening.

Another injury was the last thing Postecoglou needed, but, such is Tottenham's fortune at the moment, there was no great sense of surprise when Dragusin crumpled to the turf in the second half.
The Romania international, on as a half-time substitute, was contesting for a ball in the air with Jalal Abdullai by the touchline. Dragusin was off balance and swung his right leg at the ball in an attempt to prevent it from going out of play. When Dragusin planted his right foot on the floor, he immediately jumped in pain and clutched his right knee.
The 22-year-old signalled to the bench that he needed to come off before dropping to the floor while Postecoglou covered his mouth in shock. Hopefully, it is nothing too serious, but the way he reacted suggested he was in a lot of discomfort.
Dragusin has started Tottenham's last 14 games in all competitions while Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have been injured. Postecoglou revealed on Wednesday that Romero's return to full fitness is a 'slow burner' and 'he is not on the horizon at the moment'. It means Archie Gray and Ben Davies can expect to play more minutes at centre-back as Van de Ven is eased back into action while Romero and Dragusin watch from the sidelines.

Dragusin's performances have been mixed this season, but he deserves credit for filling in and doing his best with a rotating cast of team-mates in defence. Dragusin has suffered due to the lack of consistency around him. Maybe with Van de Ven back in the team, he could have shown his best form, but it appears that opportunity has been snatched away from him.
As one centre-back departed, another one returned.
The entire stadium roared when Van de Ven's name was read out over the PA system before kick-off, his first appearance since the 4-3 defeat to Chelsea on December 8 due to a hamstring injury. That game in itself marked his return from five weeks out with a similar issue. It means Spurs have had to cope without arguably their best defender for the majority of the past three months.
One of Van de Ven's biggest assets is his recovery speed, but fortunately, there were not too many occasions when he was forced to stretch his legs chasing after Elfsborg's strikers. Spurs dominated possession and Van de Ven stayed on the halfway line before occasionally venturing forward to snap into a challenge.
Van de Ven's incredible speed and love for slide tackles means it is easy to forget how good he is in possession. The Netherlands international lofted a beautiful pass over the head of Elfsborg's wing-back Simon Hedlund and straight into the path of Son Heung-min in the 30th minute. Son then fired a cross into the box and Richarlison's header was blocked.
Van de Ven's leadership skills were on display, too, as he tried to coach Lucas Bergvall at different points in the game. Bergvall was guilty of being overzealous on the ball in the first half and at one stage he was told to calm down by Postecoglou, too.
A lot of Tottenham's players have suffered setbacks in their recoveries from injury this season, so it was the right call to replace Van de Ven with Dragusin at half-time, even if the Romanian did not last long before suffering his own fitness concern.
Van de Ven will hope he can play more significant minutes in Sunday's match against Brentford, which will put him in a good position for next week's crucial Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool.
Sunday, February 2: Brentford (away), Premier League, 2pm UK time, 9am ET

New NBA Team Emerges as Favorite to Land Suns' Kevin Durant

New NBA Team Emerges as Favorite to Land Suns' Kevin Durant originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Phoenix Suns are widely expected to trade Kevin Durant this offseason. In fact, Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report reported that the Suns trading Durant this summer is a 'foregone conclusion.' Advertisement 'Everyone around the Kevin Durant situation, around Phoenix, are talking about a Kevin Durant trade as a foregone conclusion,' Fischer said. 'That trading Kevin Durant was spoken about to various candidates in the Suns' lengthy head coaching search process. That trading him was going to be basically a matter of fact and not a matter of if, but a matter of when." Multiple teams are expected to pursue Durant, a two-time Finals MVP who averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists for the Suns this season. While it's tough to predict where Durant lands, a new NBA team has emerged as the betting favorite to trade for the superstar forward. Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant could be heading to Texas this offseason. Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images The San Antonio Spurs, who have been heavily linked to Durant, are the betting favorites to trade for KD, who has one year left on his contract. Advertisement Durant turns 37 in September. He has played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors, Brooklyn Nets and Suns. The future Hall of Famer won two championships with the Warriors but hasn't gotten back to the NBA Finals since leaving Golden State for Brooklyn in the summer of 2019. According to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports, the Suns could trade Durant to the Spurs 'right before' the 2025 NBA Draft. 'The team that I heard last night in speaking to somebody pretty close to the situation with KD is keep your eye on the Spurs,' Gambadoro said. 'KD could have some interest in the Spurs. 'That may be a good landing spot for him with (De'Aaron) Fox and (Victor) Wembanyama, an up-and-coming team on the rise that has a great defensive anchor on their team and a terrific young player in Stephon Castle. Advertisement 'I expect that a KD deal would happen right before the draft because you want to include draft capital in the deal. So a KD trade would come up this month, sometime before the draft, probably close to the draft if it's gonna happen.' Report: Suns, Kevin Durant's representatives sorting through multiple trade offers

With an increasing sense in league circles that Giannis Antetokounmpo will remain in Milwaukee, trade speculation is ramping up around the second biggest name on the market: Kevin Durant. The Phoenix Suns and Durant's representation — led by KD's business partner Rich Kleiman — are sorting through offers, working together to find a trade that works for all involved, reports Shams Charania of ESPN. Teams that have expressed interest in Durant, sources said, mainly feature the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks. Several wild-card suitors have made inquiries on Durant in the past seven to 10 days, sources said... Suns officials and Kleiman will continue to meet on trade conversations -- with talks expected to escalate before the NBA draft later this month. Because Durant is entering the final year of his current contract ($54.7 million), he has some leverage in the situation. Teams are not going to give up the kind of haul Phoenix is seeking to rent Durant for a year. Whoever trades for Durant will likely sign him to an extension, one that is at or near the maximum of two years, $122 million. The Suns reportedly are looking for depth and players who can help them retool quickly around Devin Booker, as well as draft capital. With the Suns over the second apron of the luxury tax, a third team (or more) is almost certainly involved in any Durant trade to make the numbers work under the more restrictive CBA. Here's a closer look at the teams mentioned. • San Antonio Spurs. Durant to the Spurs is the rumor with the most heat, there is a growing sense in some circles they are the front runners. The idea for the Spurs is that trading for Durant, pairing him with Victor Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox, and having him as an example for about-to-be-drafted Dylan Harper, makes the Spurs a dangerous team next season in the West and helps build a culture for the future. Durant is not on the timeline of those other players, but the Spurs could view this as the best path to being a threat in the deep Western Conference next season. The trade would likely involve something like Devin Vassell or Keldon Johnson, Jeremy Sochan, Harrison Barnes and this year's No. 14 pick. There is zero chance the Spurs are giving up the No. 2 pick for KD. • New York Knicks. It's unclear just how serious these talks are. While a Karl-Anthony Towns for Durant works as the core of a trade (and Devin Booker and KAT have Kentucky ties), it would take a third team coming in (because the Suns are over the second apron, so some money has to go elsewhere) and for a Suns team looking to add depth and draft picks, it's hard to see a path to a trade both teams would like. Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News reports the Knicks are out of the running. The Knicks are not in the mix for Kevin Durant, the Post has learnedhttps:// • Houston Rockets. While Houston certainly put together a package of picks — they control the Suns' 2027 and 2029 first rounders — and young players that would interest Phoenix, reports from people around the Rockets from the start have said they have a limited interest in Durant because he does not match up with the timeline of the rest of their core (Amen Thompson, Alperen Sengun, Jalen Green, etc.). If the Rockets could get Durant on a steal of a deal it's one thing, but whether they would put together the best offer is another question. A trade could involve Green, this year's No. 10 pick and some other players, and it would require a third team to make the math work under the second apron. • Minnesota Timberwolves. This is a team that has been to the Western Conference Finals for consecutive years and is looking for the player who can put them over the top. Durant might be that guy, and he is Anthony Edwards' idol. Maybe the biggest challenge is logistics, with both teams over the second apron, this trade would take at least three and likely four or more teams to make work. Reports out of Minnesota say Jaden McDaniels and Naz Ried are off the table in any trade for Durant, so it would likely be Julius Randle (unless the Suns have interest in Rudy Gobert), an assortment of less expensive players, this year's No. 25 pick and/or another first, and a whole lot of players and picks going to other teams. Miami Heat: Durant to Miami is intriguing, but it's hard to see how this trade comes together. For it to work for Miami, it has to keep Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo, and they'd prefer not to give up Kel'El Ware (if I'm the Suns, I demand he is in the deal). Who else on the Heat roster would the Suns want? Andrew Wiggins, Nikola Jovic and some future firsts? Maybe Duncan Robinson. Again, it's just hard to see how this all comes together, but apparently the sides are talking.

Chelsea player ratings as Palmer and Sancho star in Conference League final triumph over Real Betis

Chelsea completed an impressive 4-1 victory over Real Betis in the Conference League final to claim a first trophy of the Enzo Maresca era. The Blues were pretty dismal in the first half in Wroclaw and deservedly trailed 1-0 but were a side transformed after the break. Cole Palmer's creativity created goals for Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson before the impressive Jadon Sancho came off the bench to add a third and Moises Caicedo completed the victory with a fourth in injury time. Advertisement It means the Blues become the first team in history to have won every single major European trophy, as the Conference League crown was added to previous successes in the Champions League, Europa League and European Cup Winners' Cup. Having already secured Champions League qualification for next season by coming fourth in the Premier League, this win completes a pretty impressive first campaign for Maresca and a young squad may well be able to use this as a springboard moving forward. Here's how the Chelsea players rated as they completed the European trophy set with Conference League victory over Betis: Filip Jorgensen – 6 Couldn't do anything about Betis's goal and then made a good save during the Spanish side's dominant start to the match. Looked comfortable enough on the ball and wasn't hugely tested beyond those early moments. Advertisement Malo Gusto – 3 Constantly inverted into central midfield alongside Caicedo and Enzo, leaving Chelsea exposed with a three at the back, and the impressive Ezzalzouli subsequently made hay down Chelsea's right early on. That included scoring the opening after Gusto gave the ball away and he was subbed off at half-time for Reece James. A largely dismal day. Malo Gusto struggled in Wroclaw (AP) Trevoh Chalobah – 6 Part of the defence run ragged in the first half and caught out by Betis's lively forwards on a couple of occasions. Was tested less in the second half as Chelsea were largely on top and that was probably a good thing. Looked decent enough on the ball. Advertisement Benoit Badiashile – 4 Like Chalobah, gets pinged for being part of the defence that were given the runaround early on and then got himself booked on 55 minutes before being subbed off on the hour mark. Marc Cucurella – 7 On the left side of the three created by Gusto inverting into the midfield, he looked as uncomfortable as his defensive partners when Ezzalzouli, Isco and Antony were causing havoc. Showed ambition when playing the ball forward though, especially in the second half, and helped keep Antony quiet after the early issues. Enzo Fernandez –8 Wanted to drive Chelsea forward from a central role and although he was quiet in the first half, popped up with the vital equaliser as he drifted between two defenders and headed home Palmer's sumptuous cross. Finals are about moments and he produced a key one. Enzo Fernandez scored the vital equaliser for Chelsea (Getty) Moises Caicedo – 8 The be-masked midfielder has quietly had a good season for Chelsea and performed his traditional role of tidying up/doing the dirty work here. Gave away free-kicks in key positions on a couple of occasions in the first half but helped steady the ship after the break as the Blues began to thrive. Got himself on the scoresheet with a superb injury-time strike, starting the move, continuing his run forward and thumping home. Advertisement Pedro Neto – 4 Largely quiet although did fire a 35th-minute shot well over the bar. Showed flickers of life early in the second half but subbed off on 60 minutes with Jadon Sancho coming on as Maresca sought a spark and the Man United loanee completely outshone him. Needs more end product next season. Cole Palmer – 9 Easily the man of the match. More capable of a defining moment of quality than anyone else in the squad and produced it for the equaliser as he floated a stunning cross on to Enzo's head. Looked dangerous every time he touched the ball in the second half and brilliantly created the second goal as well, turning his man inside out before dinking another glorious cross for Jackson to force home. The creative heart who won the Blues this final before receiving a standing ovation when subbed off with a couple of minutes remaining. Cole Palmer inspired Chelsea's comeback (AP) Noni Madueke – 7 Keen to run at opposite number Sabaly whenever he got on the ball and won a couple of corners in the first half before showing more verve and spark after the break. The goals came from Palmer's creativity and Sancho's quality finish but Madueke also looked threatening. Advertisement Nicolas Jackson – 7 Led the press effectively enough early on but was starved of service in the first half and did little with what he did get. Livelier after the break as Chelsea improved and was in the right place at the right time to score the goal that put them 2-1 up, using his shoulder/chest to force Palmer's pinpoint cross home. Not pretty but he'd made the perfect run to be there. Then made a complete hash of a one on one, with the heaviest touch you will ever see to highlight the frustration Chelsea fans have with him. Hobbled off with 10 minutes left Substitutes Reece James for Gusto, 45 – 8 Answered the half-time SOS to replace the struggling Gusto and Chelsea immediately looked more fluent. He put a good cross into the box straight away, saw a shot deflected wide and generally seemed to spark his side into life. Reece James's introduction helped turn things round for Chelsea (PA) Jadon Sancho for Neto, 61 – 8 Brought on for Neto to try and make an impact and did exactly that. Constantly ran at the Betis defence and curled in a superb third goal after shifting it on to his right foot that sealed victory for Maresca's men. Assisted Caicedo for the cherry-on-top fourth for good measure. Advertisement Levi Colwill for Badiashile, 61 – 7 Chelsea's best passer in defence and brought on for the yellow-carded Badiashile as much for that attacking ability as for as his defensive prowess. Did exactly what was asked. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for Jackson, 80 – 7 Got the assist for Sancho's goal after he aggressively drove forward. Perhaps a bit lucky that his pass made it to Sancho but deserved that fortune because of the ambition of the run. Marc Guiu for Palmer, 87 – N/A Simply brought on to waste time and so that Palmer could receive a standing ovation from Chelsea fans. Not enough time to make an impact.
