THG to be demoted from FTSE 250 as Wickes enters index

FTSE Russell, the global index provider run by the London Stock Exchange Group, updates the firms listed on its FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 indexes every three months. On Wednesday, it confirmed which of the UK's largest firms are valued highly enough to join each index based on their share value at the close of trading on Tuesday June 3. It announced that the FTSE 100 – the index of the London Stock Exchange's highest value stocks – remained unchanged in the new update. Home improvement chain Wickes is among those that will jump into the index (PA) However, the FTSE 250 – the index of the 250 next most valuable companies – will see a raft of changes. It said Manchester-based online retail business THG – which was previously called The Hut Group – will be among those demoted from the FTSE 250 index. The company has seen its shares continue a steady decline in recent months, amid continued challenges in its nutrition business, which includes the MyProtein brand. The business, founded by Matthew Moulding, saw revenues drop by 5% last year after this weakness offset growth in its beauty operations. THG is now valued at around £353 million, having been worth as much as £5.4 billion when it floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2021. Elsewhere, National Express parent firm Mobico will also drop from the index after a recent fall in revenues as it undergoes a significant turnaround plan. Bellevue Healthcare Trust, a healthcare investment firm, and mining giant Ferrexpo have also dropped from the index. Meanwhile, home improvement chain Wickes is among those that will jump into the index. Wickes shares have risen by more than 50% since the start of the year after reporting resilient customer demand despite pressure on big ticket spending. It will be joined in the index by Avon Technologies, Gamma Communications and Ashoka India Equity Investment Trust. The changes will take effect from the start of trading on Monday June 23.

UAE firm IRH buys majority stake in Congo tin miner Alphamin

June 4 (Reuters) - UAE-based International Resources Holding has agreed to buy a controlling stake in major tin producer Alphamin Resources (AFM.V), opens new tab for C$503 million ($367 million), it said on Wednesday, as the firm expands its presence in African mining. IRH, a unit of International Holding Co ( opens new tab, entered into an agreement to buy a 56% stake in Alphamin from Tremont Master Holdings, paying C$0.70 per share or about $367 million, the companies said in a joint statement. Alphamin owns Bisie tin mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo's eastern region, which is also rich in minerals including tantalum, tungsten and coltan. Alphamin's Bisie mine produces about 6% of global tin supplies annually. Alphamin's production profile "aligns with our strategy of securing interests in high-quality mining assets," IRH CEO Ali Alrashdi said in the statement. The UAE firm last year concluded a deal to buy a 51% stake in Zambia's Mopani Copper Mines for $1.1 billion. Since then, IRH has said it is seeking deals for critical minerals in Zambia and Congo. Major oil producers the UAE and also Saudi Arabia are seeking to diversify their sources of income and secure critical metal supplies from Africa and Latin America to allow them to benefit from the transition to green energy. Tin is used in electronics, renewable energy, and semiconductors. Alphamin was earlier this year forced to temporarily halt mining at Bisie as Rwanda-backed rebels M23 made advances in the vicinity of its Bisie mine.

India's Vedanta says Trump's tariffs damaging, seeks import curbs

June 4 (Reuters) - Indian metals-to-oil conglomerate Vedanta ( opens new tab said on Wednesday that U.S. President Donald Trump's doubling of aluminium tariffs to 50% poses a threat to the Indian industry already struggling with surging imports. Trump's latest round of tariffs on aluminium and steel, which took effect on Wednesday, have unsettled the global markets. "The 50% tariff announced by Trump is damaging to the Indian aluminium industry, which is already under pressure from surging imports that threaten to create surplus and risk to domestic market access," a Vedanta spokesperson told Reuters. The miner, which is the country's largest aluminium producer, urged the Indian government to implement tariffs to protect against imports. "..There should be duty guard-rails for the aluminium industry as well which has so far invested more than $20 billion to set up the current domestic primary aluminium capacity," the spokesperson said. India's cumulative aluminum exports fell 19% to 2.24 million metric tons in the fiscal year ended March 2025, according to government data. Separately, the country's federal steel minister said earlier this week that the impact of Trump's steel tariffs would be minor on the local industry, as India, the world's second-largest crude steel producer, does not export to the U.S. in significant quantities. In April, India imposed a 12% temporary tariff on some steel imports, locally known as a safeguard duty, to curb a surge in cheap shipments primarily from China.
