How AI Could Change the Way Doctors Diagnose and Treat Dementia

It's no secret that artificial intelligence has seeped into different areas of life. But while your eyes may glaze over hearing about how AI impacts the latest Google search results or the customer service industry, there's one area that's worth paying attention to: AI's potential impact on dementia care.
A growing body of research suggests that advances in AI could help revolutionize the way doctors diagnose and treat dementia in the future—and it may even help ease the burden on caregivers, too. That has a massive potential impact on the population, given that dementia affects more than 6 million Americans.

It's important to point out that the use of AI for dementia diagnoses and care is still in early stages. But doctors note one major impact is the likelihood of making quality dementia care accessible to everyone. Here's where things stand right now, plus where doctors see things headed.
As of right now, there is no officially approved AI tool that can be used in a doctor's office to help diagnose patients with dementia. But AI has the potential to help with a huge problem doctors who treat dementia face, says Vijaya B. Kolachalama, PhD, a computational medicine researcher and associate professor in the department of medicine at Boston University.
'We don't have many dementia experts, and the field is desperate to get more,' he says. 'Trying to get an appointment with a neurologist takes months and, for some cases, that may be too late.'
Kolachalama says there are 'only a handful of behavioral neurologists' who work at specialty centers and treat patients with dementia and cognitive impairment. 'Their calendars are completely booked,' he says.
But there are private neurology practices or clinical centers with expertise to treat dementia, Kolachalama points out. 'Then you have primary care physicians—they may not have the expertise and resources to diagnose these conditions,' he says.
As things stand right now, people with cognitive issues will usually see their primary care physician, get a referral, then have to wait for months to see a specialist, Kolachalama says. But the right AI tools could potentially help use the same knowledge a behavioral neurologist (i.e., a top-tier dementia specialist) has to create a data set which would allow doctors with less experience to make a proper dementia diagnosis, he says.
'We've been on this quest for some time now,' Kolachalama says. 'We are making really good progress, but there is still a lot of work to be done.'
AI is mostly being used in research settings, explains C. Munro Cullum, PhD, a neuropsychologist and professor of psychiatry, neurology and neurological surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. 'I've used it in a couple of studies,' he says. 'We are in the early stages of using this technology.'
AI is mostly used to mine electronic medical records to look for predictors of dementia, Cullum says. 'But these are not tools that are out there in practitioners' hands,' he adds.
Still, AI is 'revolutionizing' dementia diagnoses by analyzing medical data, like brain scans, genetic profiles and cognitive test results, faster and more accurately than ever before, says Gopi Battineni, PhD, a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Camerino in Italy. 'We can detect early signs of Alzheimer's or other dementias with machine learning models years before symptoms show up in MRIs or PET scans,' Battineni says. 'I am confident that this will allow for earlier intervention and more tailored care.'
AI can even help alleviate some patients' fears or encourage them to see a doctor, according to Dr, Clifford Segil, a neurologist at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California. He points out that patients usually use AI to look up their own symptoms and then share what they've learned with him.
Segil says he encourages patients to find any diagnoses that concerns them. 'Then, I evaluate them for the diagnoses I am worried about,' he says.
For now, AI's biggest role in dementia care is analyzing 'vast amounts' of medical data, says Adrian Owen, PhD, a neuroscientist at Western University and chief scientific officer at Creyos Health.
'AI can detect subtle changes that may elude humans—even patterns of speech or handwriting,' he says. 'There are already places where AI has matched or exceeded experts.'
AI is already being used by some caregivers—often without them realizing it—and its role in supporting families affected by dementia is only expected to grow. The goal, for now, is to help provide more access to proper dementia diagnoses and treatment to people at earlier stages, Kolachalama says.
'AI can help identify if a person has some form of cognitive impairment, and then we're trying to see what may be causing it,' he explains. 'Is it Alzheimer's? Depression? Anxiety? … There are multiple things that can cause dementia at the same time.'
AI can even provide better at-home monitoring, Cullum says. 'Some in-home monitors are looking at how people are walking around their home environment and searching for predictors,' he says.
Battineni agrees: 'A monitoring system detects falls, wandering or unusual behavior and alerts caregivers.'
Virtual assistants can remind patients to take medication or when their next appointment is thanks to AI, Battineni says. Care coordination platforms can make communication easier between family, doctors and care teams, he adds.
For now, AI is mostly helping provide information for caregivers, Segil says.
'There is a large burden placed on caregivers of patients with memory loss, dementia and the elderly,' he says. 'I am hopeful AI shares common sense and best practice ideas like emphasizing mobility as we age.'
Ultimately, doctors are hopeful that AI will help transform the way dementia is diagnosed and treated—and even help ease the burden for caregivers. 'I think AI is very likely to reshape the entire landscape of dementia care,' Owen says.

We're close to translating animal languages – what happens then?

Charles Darwin suggested that humans learned to speak by mimicking birdsong: our ancestors' first words may have been a kind of interspecies exchange. Perhaps it won't be long before we join the conversation once again. The race to translate what animals are saying is heating up, with riches as well as a place in history at stake. The Jeremy Coller Foundation has promised $10m to whichever researchers can crack the code. This is a race fuelled by generative AI; large language models can sort through millions of recorded animal vocalisations to find their hidden grammars. Most projects focus on cetaceans because, like us, they learn through vocal imitation and, also like us, they communicate via complex arrangements of sound that appear to have structure and hierarchy. Sperm whales communicate in codas – rapid sequences of clicks, each as brief as 1,000th of a second. Project Ceti (the Cetacean Translation Initiative) is using AI to analyse codas in order to reveal the mysteries of sperm whale speech. There is evidence the animals take turns, use specific clicks to refer to one another, and even have distinct dialects. Ceti has already isolated a click that may be a form of punctuation, and they hope to speak whaleish as soon as 2026. The linguistic barrier between species is already looking porous. Last month, Google released DolphinGemma, an AI program to translate dolphins, trained on 40 years of data. In 2013, scientists using an AI algorithm to sort dolphin communication identified a new click in the animals' interactions with one another, which they recognised as a sound they had previously trained the pod to associate with sargassum seaweed – the first recorded instance of a word passing from one species into another's native vocabulary. Humpback whale songs are incredible vocal performances, sometimes lasting up to 24 hours The prospect of speaking dolphin or whale is irresistible. And it seems that they are just as enthusiastic. In November last year, scientists in Alaska recorded an acoustic 'conversation' with a humpback whale called Twain, in which they exchanged a call-and-response form known as 'whup/throp' with the animal over a 20-minute period. In Florida, a dolphin named Zeus was found to have learned to mimic the vowel sounds, A, E, O, and U. But in the excitement we should not ignore the fact that other species are already bearing eloquent witness to our impact on the natural world. A living planet is a loud one. Healthy coral reefs pop and crackle with life. But soundscapes can decay just as ecosystems can. Degraded reefs are hushed deserts. Since the 1960s, shipping and mining have raised background noise in the oceans by about three decibels a decade. Humpback whale song occupies the same low-frequency bandwidth as deep-sea dredging and drilling for the rare earths that are vital for electronic devices. Ironically, mining the minerals we need to communicate cancels out whales' voices. Humpback whale songs are incredible vocal performances, sometimes lasting up to 24 hours. 'Song' is apt: they seem to include rhymed phrases, and their compositions travel the oceans with them, evolving as they go in a process called 'song revolutions', where a new cycle replaces the old. (Imagine if Nina Simone or the Beatles had erased their back catalogue with every new release.) They're crucial to migration and breeding seasons. But in today's louder soundscape, whale song is crowded out of its habitual bandwidth and even driven to silence – from up to 1.2 km away from commercial ships, humpback whales will cease singing rather than compete with the noise. In interspecies translation, sound only takes us so far. Animals communicate via an array of visual, chemical, thermal and mechanical cues, inhabiting worlds of perception very different to ours. Can we really understand what sound means to echolocating animals, for whom sound waves can be translated visually? The German ecologist Jakob von Uexküll called these impenetrable worlds umwelten. To truly translate animal language, we would need to step into that animal's umwelt – and then, what of us would be imprinted on her, or her on us? 'If a lion could talk,' writes Stephen Budiansky, revising Wittgenstein's famous aphorism in Philosophical Investigations, 'we probably could understand him. He just would not be a lion any more.' We should ask, then, how speaking with other beings might change us. Talking to another species might be very like talking to alien life. It's no coincidence that Ceti echoes Nasa's Seti – Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence – Institute. In fact, a Seti team recorded the whup/throp exchange, on the basis that learning to speak with whales may help us if we ever meet intelligent extraterrestrials. In Denis Villeneuve's movie Arrival, whale-like aliens communicate via a script in which the distinction between past, present and future times collapses. For Louise, the linguist who translates the script, learning Heptapod lifts her mind out of linear time and into a reality in which her own past and future are equally available. The film mentions Edward Sapir and Benjamin Whorf's theory of linguistic determinism – the idea that our experience of reality is encoded in language – to explain this. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis was dismissed in the mid-20th century, but linguists have since argued that there may be some truth to it. Pormpuraaw speakers in northern Australia refer to time moving from east to west, rather than forwards or backwards as in English, making time indivisible from the relationship between their body and the land. Whale songs are born from an experience of time that is radically different to ours. Humpbacks can project their voices over miles of open water; their songs span the widest oceans. Imagine the swell of oceanic feeling on which such sounds are borne. Speaking whale would expand our sense of space and time into a planetary song. I imagine we'd think very differently about polluting the ocean soundscape so carelessly. Where it counts, we are perfectly able to understand what nature has to say; the problem is, we choose not to. Everything you need to know from Google I/O 2025

From the opening AI-influenced intro video set to "You Get What You Give" by New Radicals to CEO Sundar Pichai's sign-off, Google I/O 2025 was packed with news and updates for the tech giant and its products. And when we say packed, we mean it, as this year's Google I/O clocked in at nearly two hours long. During that time, Google shared some big wins for its AI products, such as Gemini topping various categories on the LMArena leaderboard. Another example that Google seemed really proud of was the fact that Gemini completed Pokémon Blue a few weeks ago. But, we know what you're really here for: Product updates and new product announcements. Aside from a few braggadocious moments, Google spent most of those 117 minutes talking about what's coming out next. Google I/O mixes consumer-facing product announcements with more developer-oriented ones, from the latest Gmail updates to Google's powerful new chip, Ironwood, coming to Google Cloud customers later this year. We're going to break down what product updates and announcements you need to know from the full two-hour event, so you can walk away with all the takeaways without spending the same time it takes to watch a major motion picture to learn about them. Before we dive in though, here's the most shocking news out of Google I/O: The subscription pricing that Google has for its Google AI Ultra plan. While Google provides a base subscription at $19.99 per month, the Ultra plan comes in at a whopping $249.99 per month for its entire suite of products with the highest rate limits available. Google tucked away what will easily be its most visible feature way too far back into the event, but we'll surface it to the top. At Google I/O, Google announced that the new AI Mode feature for Google Search is launching today to everyone in the United States. Basically, it will allow users to use Google's search feature but with longer, more complex queries. Using a "query fan-out technique," AI Mode will be able to break a search into multiple parts in order to process each part of the query, then pull all the information together to present to the user. Google says AI Mode "checks its work" too, but its unclear at this time exactly what that means. Google announces AI Mode in Google Search Credit: Google AI Mode is available now. Later in the summer, Google will launch Personal Context in AI Mode, which will make suggestions based on a user's past searches and other contextual information about the user from other Google products like Gmail. In addition, other new features will soon come to AI Mode, such as Deep Search, which can dive deeper into queries by searching through multiple websites, and data visualization features, which can take the search results and present them in a visual graph when applicable. According to Google, its AI overviews in search are viewed by 1.5 billion users every month, so AI Mode clearly has the largest potential user base out of all of Google's announcements today. Out of all the announcements at the event, these AI shopping features seemed to spark the biggest reaction from Google I/O live attendees. Connected to AI Mode, Google showed off its Shopping Graph, which includes more than 50 billion products globally. Users can just describe the type of product they are looking for – say a specific type of couch, and Google will present options that match that description. Google AI Shopping Credit: Google Google also had a significant presentation that showed its presenter upload a photo of themselves so that AI could create a visual of what she'd look like in a dress. This virtual try-on feature will be available in Google Labs, and it's the IRL version of Cher's Clueless closet. The presenter was then able to use an AI shopping agent to keep tabs on the item's availability and track its price. When the price dropped, the user received a notification of the pricing change. Google said users will be able to try on different looks via AI in Google Labs starting today. Google's long-awaited post-Google Glass AR/VR plans were finally presented at Google I/O. The company also unveiled a number of wearable products utilizing its AR/VR operating system, Android XR. One important part of the Android XR announcement is that Google seems to understand the different use cases for an immersive headset and an on-the-go pair of smartglasses and have built Android XR to accommodate that. While Samsung has previously teased its Project Moohan XR headset, Google I/O marked the first time that Google revealed the product, which is being built in partnership with the mobile giant and chipmaker Qualcomm. Google shared that the Project Moohan headset should be available later this year. Project Moohan Credit: Google In addition to the XR headset, Google announced Glasses with Android XR, smartglasses that incorporate a camera, speakers, and in-lens display that connect with a user's smartphone. Unlike Google Glass, these smart glasses will incorporate more fashionable looks thanks to partnerships with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. Google shared that developers will be able to start developing for Glasses starting next year, so it's likely that a release date for the smartglasses will follow after that. Easily the star of Google I/O 2025 was the company's AI model, Gemini. Google announced a new updated Gemini 2.5 Pro, which it says is its most powerful model yet. The company showed Gemini 2.5 Pro being used to turn sketches into full applications in a demo. Along with that, Google introduced Gemini 2.5 Flash, which is a more affordable version of the powerful Pro model. The latter will be released in early June with the former coming out soon after. Google also revealed Gemini 2.5 Pro Deep Think for complex math and coding, which will only be available to "trusted testers" at first. Speaking of coding, Google shared its asynchronous coding agent Jules, which is currently in public beta. Developers will be able to utilize Jules in order to tackle codebase tasks and modify files. Jules coding agent Credit: Google Developers will also have access to a new Native Audio Output text-to-speech model which can replicate the same voice in different languages. The Gemini app will soon see a new Agent Mode, bringing users an AI agent who can research and complete tasks based on a user's prompts. Gemini will also be deeply integrated into Google products like Workspace with Personalized Smart Replies. Gemini will use personal context via documents, emails, and more from across a user's Google apps in order to match their tone, voice, and style in order to generate automatic replies. Workspace users will find the feature available in Gmail this summer. Other features announced for Gemini include Deep Research, which lets users upload their own files to guide the AI agent when asking questions, and Gemini in Chrome, an AI Assistant that answers queries using the context on the web page that a user is on. The latter feature is rolling out this week for Gemini subscribers in the U.S. Google intends to bring Gemini to all of its devices, including smartwatches, smart cars, and smart TVs. Gemini's AI assistant capabilities and language model updates were only a small piece of Google's broader AI puzzle. The company had a slew of generative AI announcements to make too. Google announced Imagen 4, its latest image generation model. According to Google, Imagen 4 provides richer details and better visuals. In addition, Imagen 4 is apparently much better at generating text and typography in its graphics. This is an area which AI models are notoriously bad at, so Imagen 4 appears to be a big step forward. Flow AI video tool Credit: Google A new video generation model, Veo 3, was also unveiled with a video generation tool called Flow. Google claims Veo 3 has a stronger understanding of physics when generating scenes and can also create accompanying sound effects, background noise, and dialogue. Both Veo 3 and Flow are available today alongside a new generative music model called Lyria 2. Google I/O also saw the debut of Gemini Canvas, which Google describes as a co-creation platform. Another big announcement out of Google I/O: Project Starline is no more. Google's immersive communication project will now be known as Google Beam, an AI-first communication platform. As part of Google Beam, Google announced Google Meet translations, which basically provides real-time speech translation during meetings on the platform. AI will be able to match a speaker's voice and tone, so it sounds like the translation is coming directly from them. Google Meet translations are available in English and Spanish starting today with more language on the way in the coming weeks. Google Meet translations Credit: Google Google also had another work-in-progress project to tease under Google Beam: A 3-D conferencing platform that uses multiple cameras to capture a user from different angles in order to render the individual on a 3-D light-field display. While Project Starline may have undergone a name change, it appears Project Astra is still kicking it at Google, at least for now. Project Astra is Google's real-world universal AI assistant and Google had plenty to announce as part of it. Gemini Live is a new AI assistant feature that can interact with a user's surroundings via their mobile device's camera and audio input. Users can ask Gemini Live questions about what they're capturing on camera and the AI assistant will be able to answer queries based on those visuals. According to Google, Gemini Live is rolling out today to Gemini users. Gemini Live Credit: Google It appears Google has plans to implement Project Astra's live AI capabilities into Google Search's AI mode as a Google Lens visual search enhancement. Google also highlighted some of its hopes for Gemini Live, such as being able to help as an accessibility tool for those with disabilities. Another one of Google's AI projects is an AI agent that can interact with the web in order to complete tasks for the user known as Project Mariner. While Project Mariner was previously announced late last year, Google had some updates such as a multi-tasking feature which would allow an AI agent to work on up to 10 different tasks simultaneously. Another new feature is Teach and Repeat, which would provide the AI agent with the ability to learn from previously completed tasks in order to complete similar ones without the need for the same detailed direction in the future. Google announced plans to bring these agentic AI capabilities to Chrome, Google Search via AI Mode, and the Gemini app.

The Best Time to Take Vitamin D for Maximum Absorption, According to Health Experts

Reviewed by Dietitian Sarah Pflugradt, Ph.D., RDN, CSCSIt can be challenging to meet your vitamin D needs through diet alone. It doesn't matter whether you take vitamin D in the morning or evening. Take vitamin D with a meal or snack containing fat to enhance it comes to the supplement aisle, multivitamins, omega-3s and probiotics might score the most real estate on the shelf. However, if that multi doesn't come with a dose of vitamin D, your doctor might recommend adding another pill to your routine. Known as the "sunshine vitamin," vitamin D is something most of us aren't getting enough of, and if you're wondering what time of day you should take it, we're here with the answer. Roxana Ehsani, M.S., RD, CSSD, explains that vitamin D is one of four fat-soluble vitamins (A, E and K are the others). Our bodies make vitamin D after being exposed to the sun, and we can also get it through our diet. It plays 'many important roles in our body,' adds Ehsani. These include supporting your immune system, muscle and nerve function, your body's ability to absorb calcium and more. Even though vitamin D is critical for overall health, research suggests that an estimated 25% of Americans are deficient in it. This could be because there are few food sources of vitamin D, and many people don't see sunshine during winter, live in regions with limited sunlight, and/or keep their skin covered while al fresco. The average older adult's recommended Daily Value of vitamin D is 20 micrograms, which is equal to 800 international units (IU). For reference, one egg and a 3-ounce can of tuna each have above 1 mcg, 3 ounces of sockeye salmon delivers around 12 mcg, and 3 ounces of trout offers around 14 mcg. Unless you're taking a spoonful of cod liver oil (34 mcg) or eating salmon or trout daily, it can be challenging to meet that mark through food alone, since most food sources of vitamin D offer small amounts. In the U.S., people get most of their dietary vitamin D from fortified milk, which contains around 100 IU per 8-ounce serving. But you'd need to drink a quart or more of milk daily to reach the DV—and milk consumption has been declining in recent years, a factor that some experts cite when discussing increased vitamin D deficiency. That's why many people take a vitamin D supplement. However, you want to make sure not only that you're taking the right amount but also that your body is absorbing it properly. Read along to learn when to take your vitamin D supplement and what factors you should consider. We'll cut to the chase: According to the current scientific consensus, our experts agree that it doesn't matter what time of the day you take your vitamin D supplement. Many people find it handy to take supplements in the morning before the day sweeps them away. Others like to store them in a drawer near the kitchen cleaning supplies to pop after tidying up after dinner. It shouldn't make a substantial difference in absorption rates whether you swing to one side or the other, although it's easiest to remember if you pick one time and stick with it. There are many factors to consider when taking any supplement, not just a vitamin D supplement; here's what you should keep in mind. First, several conditions can influence an individual's vitamin D levels (or needs). These include osteoporosis or osteopenia, depression, kidney or liver disease and having a family history of neurological conditions, to name a few. According to David Davidson, M.D., it's especially important for 'people with absorption issues, like inflammatory bowel disease or post-gastric bypass surgery' to work with their doctors to dial in their dose and receive personalized guidance about when to take vitamin D. Body size can also alter absorbency and dosing, so be sure to ask your doctor for an individual recommendation before you set off to shop for supplements. If you notice any nausea, constipation, noticeable appetite shifts or other adverse symptoms after taking your supplement, be sure to chat with your doctor. Regardless of why you're including a vitamin D supplement in your regimen, it's important to consider your routine. It's difficult to reap the health benefits of vitamin D if you forget to take it most of the time. Many people do well with 'habit stacking' or pairing the routine of taking vitamin D with something else they do daily on autopilot. Keep this in mind as you consider when to take your supplements. Ehsani shows how to put this into practice: 'If you always brush your teeth in the morning after breakfast, for instance, can you place your vitamin D supplements next to your toothbrush to remind you to take it each day?' As with any new medication or supplement, it's important to check with a health care professional to determine the best time for you. As a general rule, though, 'the 'best' time is what works best for you,' Ehsani says. 'The timing of when to take the vitamin D supplement shouldn't matter, but it should be taken with food,' Davidson says. 'Because it's a fat-soluble vitamin, food, specifically healthy fats, will help with the absorption of vitamin D.' For example, if you tend to have almond-butter toast each morning, 'consider taking it with that meal, as almond butter contains healthy fats,' Ehsani advises. Or, if you like to serve dinner with a side salad topped with a handful of walnuts and drizzled with a vinaigrette, take your vitamin D before you sit down to dig in. You could also choose to take your vitamin D with a glass of whole milk or a yogurt drink—you'll get the addition of calcium from the dairy and the vitamin D will help your body absorb the calcium. 'It may be impractical for you to take it with meals if you eat a majority of your meals away from home and can't realistically carry the vitamin D supplement with you everywhere you go,' Ehsani acknowledges. So, if that's not a realistic proposition, tell a health care professional about your schedule and when you think it might better fit, and ask for their runner-up recommendation. There are two types of vitamin D: D2 and D3. UV-grown plants, fungi and fortified foods deliver D2, while we get D3 from sunlight and animal-based ingredients. While both are important and beneficial, vitamin D3 is more bioavailable than vitamin D2. This means that your body uses vitamin D3 more efficiently, so you might need a higher dose of vitamin D2 to achieve the same effects as you might with a supplement that includes just D3. Before starting any new supplement regimen, talk to a health care professional about the best form of vitamin D for you. And if you already take a vitamin D supplement, confirm with them that you're taking the right form. When choosing a vitamin D supplement, consider opting for vitamin D3 over D2 so your body can use it more efficiently. Additionally, Ehsani and Davidson confirm that, ideally, you should take your vitamin D supplement with a meal that contains fat to help with absorption. For instance, if you like to take vitamin D first thing in the morning, well before you typically eat breakfast, or prefer to pop your supplements just before bed, think about doing so with a handful of nuts or a spoonful of nut butter, Ehsani says. That way, you'll enjoy two wellness wins in one: better vitamin D absorption and all the health benefits of nuts.
