British killer drone start-up wins backing from defence giants
A British company behind a drone that will give Army troops 'an Apache gunship in the boot of their car' has secured backing from one of Europe's biggest defence giants.
Hydra Drones has developed an unmanned aerial vehicle powered by rotors and up to six rocket boosters, making it capable of carrying up to 400 kilograms in weight and matching the firepower of an Apache helicopter when multiple drones are used simultaneously.
The heavy lift capability means it can be fitted out to carry everything from laser-guided Brimstone missiles to heavy machine guns and, one day, potentially injured soldiers.
It takes just minutes to launch and can fire missiles capable of hitting tanks 20 miles away.
A less capable version of the device has already been trialled by the Army. Bosses now want to complete a prototype and were close to winning funding from the Ministry of Defence before spending freezes last year prompted them to search elsewhere.
Hydra has now received an investment – understood to be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds – from Anglo-French-Italian missile manufacturer MBDA, which has also taken a minority shareholding.
MBDA is a joint venture between BAE Systems, Airbus and Leonardo and makes Storm Shadow cruise missiles for the UK, as well as the laser-guided, tank-busting Brimstone missile.
The cash invested in Hydra is in addition to nearly £1m of finance already raised by the company – which includes several former members of the Armed Forces – from friends, family and private individuals.
It will allow Hydra to finish a prototype and push on with further trials this year, probably in September.
The Army has been working with the company since 2021 and promoted its drone at the military sector's flagship Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) exhibition in London in 2023.
Tom O'Connor, managing director of Hydra Drones and a former aircraft technician for the Army, said five Hydra drones would be able to match the firepower of Apache, reducing the need to put human lives in danger.
With a full payload, they should be able to stay airborne for up to 25 minutes, meaning they could be used to safely reinforce frontline troops with significant amounts of ammunition and food supplies.
At the same time, the diesel and electric-powered devices could potentially be paired with manned aircraft for a variety of other missions.
Mr O'Connor said: 'With this small, cheap platform, the Army will be able to deliver whatever it needs to deliver without using the relatively small number of manned aircraft. Instead, those can be freed up for more specialist tasks.
'It is semi-attritable – so it will not cost crazy money.'
The drone is designed to be 'modular', meaning its power can be easily scaled up or down using different numbers of attachable jets, and troops can pack it away easily when moving around.
MBDA's investment in Hydra comes as defence companies are investing in heavy-lift drones as cheaper alternatives to helicopters for militaries around the world.
The large number of helicopter missions currently move payloads of a few hundred kilograms or less, meaning there is huge potential for drones to become the workhorses for this kind of logistics.
BAE Systems last year invested in Malloy Aeronautics, another British company developing a heavy-lift drone.
The company's T-650, which can transport payloads of up to 300kg, has been dubbed a 'Land Rover in the sky' and can also use a range of attachments.

A traditional Danish pork sandwich has become a popular choice amongst guests at a Lake District hotel. The flæskesteg sandwich, served at the Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa in the Borrowdale Valley accounts for 5 per cent of all sandwich sales despite being one of 18 options on the lunch menu. Kit Graves, director of Lake District Hotels, said: "This sandwich represents generations of Danish tradition. "We never expected it would resonate so strongly with Lake District visitors, but it's consistently one of our top performers." The sandwich features warm roast pork, crispy crackling, braised red cabbage, pickled cucumber, mustard mayonnaise, and iceberg lettuce, all served on a toasted seeded white roll. It was introduced in 2024 by Ms Graves, who drew inspiration from her Danish heritage and travels to Copenhagen. The flæskesteg has attracted both guests from the area and abroad. Dani Hope and Charles Graves, fellow directors, said its success lies in offering something outside the usual British pub fare. Ms Hope said: "It's remarkable how a heritage recipe from Copenhagen has found such a warm welcome in the heart of the Lake District. "Our guests are increasingly adventurous with their food choices, and this sandwich offers something genuinely different." Its popularity reflects a wider trend in the Lake District hospitality sector to include more culturally authentic and distinctive dishes, appealing to a growing and diverse visitor base. The Danish sandwich remains a daily staple on the Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa lunch menu, with many guests returning or visiting specifically to try it after hearing positive reviews.

Ferrari target 'magnificent' third straight Le Mans 24 Hour triumph
Ferrari's Formula One fortunes may be flagging but the Italian constructor start this weekend's Le Mans 24 Hour Race as favourites targeting a third consecutive triumph in motorsport's fabled endurance classic. Miranda Devine: The art of Trump's trade deal with China — how admin got it done
Most of us were blissfully unaware of one of the potentially dire consequences of the recent trade wars with China: a shortage of rare earth magnets, which are a critical component of every car engine, smartphones and military weapons systems. China's April export ban on magnets and six rare earth elements was payback for President Trump's tariff hikes. It threatened to cripple automotive production lines and risk national security. Advertisement China has a near-monopoly on these crucial resources, which is a frightening reality in today's interconnected world. But two can play at that game, and the Trump administration swiftly matched Chinese aggression with some potent weapons from our own trade arsenal after trade talks last month in Geneva failed to resolve the issue. The retaliation measures, cooked up by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, included a ban on critical American aircraft parts, semiconductors and a petrochemical called ethane, which China uses to make plastic. Advertisement Secretary of State Marco Rubio also threatened to 'aggressively revoke' visas for Chinese students. Every couple of days there was new payback from the US, as Trump ratcheted up the pain in stages. The pain was what finally brought the Chinese back to the table this week. In addition to punishing tariffs, the payback measures hit the already sluggish Chinese economy hard. Advertisement Export growth is down more than 30%, and factory activity reportedly is slowing, while domestic demand is weak. 'Planely' in trouble By last week, when Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping had a long, conciliatory phone call, China had 250 planes grounded and another 250 planes a week due to become inoperable. After the call, Trump declared that he wants to 'open up China' and dispatched Bessent, Lutnick and trade envoy Jamieson Greer to London for truce talks with a Chinese delegation led by Vice Premier He Lifeng. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who pulled off the first trade deal under the new Trump tariff regime, provided neutral territory for the negotiations in Lancaster House, an elegant 19th century building in the St. James's district of central London, around the corner from King Charles' residence. China will resume supply of the magnets and critical rare earths 'up front,' and Chinese students will be welcome again at US colleges and universities, the president wrote on Truth Social Wednesday morning. It was an important test for the cohesion of the US side, which Trump has had an eye on lately. Competition between Bessent and Lutnick has been the talk of DC as the billionaire former Wall Street alphas butt heads over their overlapping responsibilities and distinctively different personalities. Trump often praises the reserved patrician Bessent as straight out of 'central casting' and native New Yorker Lutnick as 'a killer.' Tag-team negotiators Advertisement But Lutnick could not have been more complimentary about Bessent in an early morning phone call Wednesday as Lutnick was jetting home from London. 'The combination of Secretary Bessent, Ambassador Greer, and me played incredibly well,' he said. 'Scott was really strong [and] there was a lot of respect . . . The three of us were tight. You couldn't get a wedge between us . . . 'At one point, the three Cabinet officials put the talks with the Japanese side on hold and began debating right in front of them,' a source told Nikkei. But according to Lutnick's account, any philosophical differences they may have on trade and economics have been resolved and they presented a united front for the Chinese, to the great benefit of America. While Trump's detractors bemoan his upending of world trade, Bessent describes the president's approach as 'strategic uncertainty,' which can yield surprising benefits. Despite the angst, so far it seems to be paying off.
