Sweden to limit access to weapons after mass shooting - Region

Al-Ahram Weekly07-02-2025

Sweden on Friday said it will introduce a bill to amend weapon laws and restrict access to semi-automatic guns after the country's worst mass shooting this week.
The move comes after a gunman killed 10 people on Tuesday before apparently killing himself at an education centre in Orebro, west of Stockholm.
"There are certain types of weapons that are so dangerous that they should only be possessed for civilian purposes as an exception," the government said in a statement.
The Sweden Democrats, who are propping up the government, had agreed on a proposal to amend the laws, including restricting access to semi-automatic weapons, the statement said.
"The horrific act of violence in Orebro raises several key questions about gun legislation," it said.
Police have said several long-barrelled weapons and 10 empty magazines were recovered alongside the suspected gunman.
Police have not specified the types of arms recovered but have confirmed he had a license for four weapons, three of which were found next to him.
The government said it specifically wanted to restrict access to semi-automatic weapons such as the AR-15, citing it as "an example of a weapon that is compatible with large magazines and can cause a lot of damage in a short time".
It noted that the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency had approved its use for hunting in 2023 and said it wanted to scrap this.
Motive
The government also said it would also change the rules to assess if a person was fit to possess firearms.
It referred to a recent probe which had found that "several of the requirements that are currently taken into account in the suitability assessment for a licence to possess a firearm are not sufficiently clear".
The same probe, the results of which was presented to the government in May, noted "it cannot be ruled out" that violent individuals could get a hunting licence to "gain access to semi-automatic rifles that can easily be fitted with large magazines."
The coalition government said it would also instruct police and social services to step up their cooperation in reporting people who are medically unfit to own a firearm.
Police have said they were still working to establish a motive for the shooting.
Anna Bergqvist, who is heading the investigation, told AFP Thursday there were "multiple nationalities, different genders and different ages" among those killed.
Broadcaster TV4 published a video filmed by a student hiding in a bathroom in which shots can be heard outside and a person can be heard shouting: "You will leave Europe!"
The Syrian embassy said at least two of the victims were Syrian, while Bosnia's foreign ministry said Thursday a Bosnian woman had been killed.
Some of the victims had yet to be identified but police told AFP it was possible the work could be completed on Friday.
The Swedish press has identified the suspect as 35-year-old Rickard Andersson, but there has been no official confirmation.
Swedish media reports painted a picture of the suspect as a local man who had been living as a recluse and was suffering from psychological problems.

Israel kills 22 Palestinians across Gaza, including 16 near aid centres - War on Gaza

Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli fire killed 22 people across the Palestinian territory on Thursday, including 16 who were waiting to collect aid. The distribution of food and basic supplies under the US-Israeli new system in Gaza has become increasingly fraught and perilous, exacerbating the territory's deep hunger crisis. Civil defence official Mohammed al-Mughayyir told AFP that the Al-Awda Hospital received 10 dead and around 200 wounded, including women and children, "after Israeli drones dropped multiple bombs on gatherings of civilians near an aid distribution point around the Netzarim checkpoint in central Gaza". He said that Gaza City's Al-Shifa Hospital received six dead following Israeli attacks on aid queues near Netzarim and in the Al-Sudaniya area in northwestern Gaza. Mughayyir said another six people were killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza. The US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) alleged that the Palestinian resistance group, Hamas attacked aid workers en route to a distribution centre on Wednesday, saying at least five people were killed. GHF said a bus carrying its staff to a distribution site near the southern city of Khan Yunis was "brutally attacked by Hamas" around 10:00 pm (1900 GMT). In an email to AFP, the resistance group added that all five of the people killed were Palestinian aid workers for GHF. However, a unit of Gaza's police force said it killed 12 members of an Israeli-backed militia after detaining them early Thursday. Dozens of Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire while trying to reach GHF distribution points since they began operating in late May, according to Gaza's civil defence agency. *This story was edited by Ahram Online Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Israel Launches Military Operation in Syria, Arrests Palestinians

Amir Hagag Israeli occupation forces carried out a nighttime military operation inside Syrian territory this morning, arresting a number of Palestinians, allegedly affiliated with the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and planning attacks against Israel. The operation, carried out by forces from the Alexandroni Brigade of the Israeli army's 210th Division, took place in the Syrian town of Beit Jann, located near the border with the occupied Golan Heights, amid official international silence regarding Israel's latest violation of the sovereignty of an Arab state. Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee said in a statement on his Facebook account that the operation was carried out "based on intelligence information" and resulted in "the arrest of a number of terrorists from the Hamas terrorist organization," as he put it. They were transferred to the occupied territories for interrogation by the Israeli Intelligence Unit 504. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean

Global Displacement Tops 122 Million

Israa Farhan The number of people displaced by war and persecution worldwide has surged to over 122 million, according to the latest report from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), highlighting a worsening crisis as international aid funding plummets to its lowest level in a decade. The agency's data, released Thursday, reveals that ongoing conflicts in countries such as Sudan, Ukraine, and Myanmar have forced more than two million additional people to flee their homes since the start of 2025. Despite the return of some Syrian refugees following the fall of Bashar al-Assad, the net number of displaced individuals continues to rise. Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, attributed the increase to the failure to resolve long-standing conflicts and the persistence of major wars. He described the current global landscape as one marked by severe disruption in international relations, shaped by modern warfare and severe humanitarian distress. UNHCR's report also warns that aid funding has dropped back to 2015 levels — a time when the global number of refugees was roughly half of today's figures. The organisation labelled this drastic cut in assistance as both "brutal and ongoing", stating it places refugees and vulnerable communities at significant risk. The agency stressed that current funding levels are unsustainable and could jeopardise life-saving services, especially for women and children. Reduced support, it warned, increases the likelihood of sexual violence against displaced women and exposes children to greater risk of human trafficking. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean
