Chinese-owned Character.ai rival vanishes from US App Store
Talkie has been unavailable in the US App Store for about six days. However, Talkie remains downloadable on Google Play, where the app was last updated on Thursday. Users in the US who previously downloaded Talkie from Apple's store can still access the app.
Talkie's official TikTok account, which has 29,800 followers, has not published any updates this week after previously posting daily. In response to a series of user inquiries regarding its removal from the App Store, Talkie attributed the situation to 'technical reasons'. 'We will get it fixed soon for you,' the team said, without providing a clear timeline for when the app would become available again. Shanghai-based MiniMax declined to comment on Friday.

Launched in June 2023, Talkie allows users to create and converse with personalised virtual characters through generative AI technology. It was the fourth-most downloaded app in the US in the first half of 2024, surpassing Google-backed rival Character.ai, which ranked 10th, according to data research firm Sensor Tower.
Globally, Talkie recorded 17 million downloads in the first eight months of the year, trailing Character.ai with nearly 19 million downloads, according to a Sensor Tower report in September. Talkie's monthly active users reached 11 million in July, with over half living in the US.

Chinese e-commerce giant has recently become a shareholder in Tencent Holdings -backed robotics star AgiBot, as China's robotics industry has become one of the most closely watched sectors this year among investors and tech giants. AgiBot, also known as Zhiyuan Robotics, was established in 2023 by a founding team that included Huawei Technologies veterans and professors. The company recently added JD subsidiary JD Technology as a shareholder of its main entity, Shanghai Zhiyuan New Innovation Technology, according to a company record change on May 22 from registry information provider Aiqicha. Another new shareholder is Shanghai Embodied Intelligence Venture Fund, formed just last month with backing from the Shanghai government. AgiBot has set a record in total funding among its Chinese peers, according to a Thursday post by Shanghai State-owned Capital Investment, which owns the Shanghai Embodied Intelligence Venture Fund. Following the investment, which saw each new shareholder take a 0.75 per cent stake in AgiBot, the Shanghai-based robotics start-up boosted its registered capital by 2.7 per cent to 82.6 million yuan (US$11 million), according to Aiqicha data. It is not clear whether the start-up has launched a new funding round. Neither JD nor AgiBot immediately responded to requests for comment on Friday. Shanghai Embodied Intelligence Venture Fund could not be reached for comment.

Shanghai embraces embodied intelligence as it boosts policy support for humanoid robotics
Shanghai hosted an embodied intelligence industry conference and a humanoid robotics skills competition on Thursday, as multiple Chinese cities step up efforts to support the burgeoning sector, now a key focus of the nation's hi-tech ambitions. University students competed using robots provided by the organisers in various tasks, from soccer matches to practical applications in industrial, household and commercial scenarios. 'We will double down on our support in technology commercialisation, real-world scenario applications, and market promotion, along with increased government procurement,' Wu Jincheng, deputy secretary general of the Shanghai municipal government and Pudong district chief, said at Thursday morning's opening ceremony. Wu stressed the city's commitment to policy support, including funding, open-source data for embodied intelligence, industry cluster advantages, start-up spaces, and housing incentives for talent. At a media briefing on Wednesday, general manager of Zhangjiang Group Chen Weiwei said that Shanghai accounted for a third of China's robotics industry, while Pudong district represented one-third of Shanghai's robotics companies, or more than 100 such firms. Chen highlighted the Zhangjiang Robot Valley project, launched in 2020, which covers an area of 4.2 square kilometres.
