Ukrainian former politician shot dead outside school in Madrid
A Ukrainian former politician has been shot dead by an unknown assailant outside a school in Madrid, Spain, authorities said.
The man was identified by Spain's Ministry of Interior as Andriy Portnov, who was previously a senior aide to Ukraine's former President Viktor Yanukovych.
The attack on Wednesday morning took place outside the gates of the American School in the Spanish capital's upscale neighbourhood of Pozuelo de Alarcon.
Police were called at about 9:15am (07:15 GMT) and notified that a man had been shot in the street.
Witnesses quoted by the police said he was shot 'several times' in the head and body by more than one assailant. The attackers fled on foot, police said.
Radio station Cadena SER reported that Portnov was taking his children to school when he was attacked.
Portnov had been closely tied to Ukraine's pro-Russian former leader Yanukovych, having served as deputy head of the presidential office from 2010 to 2014.
During Yanukovych's time in power, Portnov was involved in drafting legislation aimed at persecuting participants of the 2014 revolution in Ukraine. He was later placed on several sanctions lists, including by the US Treasury in 2021.

At least three killed in Russia's ‘most powerful' attack on Kharkiv
At least five people have been killed and more than 20 wounded as Russia launched a barrage of missiles, drones and bombs across Ukraine, officials said. The Ukrainian air force said on Saturday that Russia struck with 215 missiles and drones overnight, and Ukrainian air defences shot down and neutralised 87 drones and seven missiles. At least three people were killed and 17 others, including two children, were wounded in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said, describing the assault as 'the most powerful' on the city since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He reported 48 Iranian-made drones, two missiles and four guided bombs were fired before dawn at the city of 1.4 million people, located just 50km (30 miles) from the Russian border. 'Drones are still circling above,' Terekhov wrote on Telegram at 4:40am (01:40 GMT), as air raid sirens wailed across the city. Residential buildings and civilian infrastructure were heavily damaged. The northeastern city was also hit by a missile strike on Thursday that left 18 people injured, including four children. Elsewhere in the south, Russian shelling hit the city of Kherson, killing a couple and damaging residential buildings, regional Governor Oleksandr Prokudin confirmed. In Dnipro, two women, aged 45 and 88, were injured in separate attacks. Officials said on Friday that at least six people were killed and dozens were wounded on Friday when Russia launched an aerial bombardment across Ukraine. Rescue workers in the city of Lutsk on Saturday recovered another body, raising the toll from Friday's attacks to seven. Moscow said Friday's assault was carried out in response to Ukrainian 'terrorist acts' against Russia, saying military sites were targeted. The surge in Russian attacks follows a Ukrainian drone operation last weekend that damaged nuclear-capable military aircraft at Russian airbases deep behind the front lines, including in Siberia. Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged to retaliate for the attack, which Kyiv reportedly planned for 18 months using smuggled drones. Ukraine, meanwhile, continues to push for a 30-day ceasefire and presented its latest proposal during talks in Istanbul on Monday. But Moscow has rejected calls for a truce, insisting the war is a matter of national survival. 'For us, it is an existential issue,' Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Friday. 'It concerns our national interest, our safety, and the future of our country.' Putin has demanded Ukraine withdraw from four partially occupied regions, abandon its NATO ambitions and halt all Western military cooperation – terms Kyiv has dismissed as unacceptable. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has instead called for a three-way summit involving himself, Putin and United States President Donald Trump.

Girl, 6, among group arrested for assassination of Myanmar general
Security forces in Myanmar have arrested a six-year-old girl, along with 15 other people suspected of involvement in the assassination of a retired army officer last month, state-run media report. The 16 suspects – 13 males and three females – were arrested in four different regions of the country late last month, the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar said on Friday. Those arrested include Lin Latt Shwe, the six-year-old daughter of the alleged assassin, Myo Ko Ko, who was reported to have at least three other aliases. The newspaper report said the child and her parents were arrested in the central city of Bagan. A little-known armed group calling itself the Golden Valley Warriors claimed responsibility for killing retired Brigadier General Cho Tun Aung, 68, who was shot outside his home in Yangon, the country's commercial capital, on May 22. Other detainees include the owner of a private hospital, which is alleged to have provided treatment to the assassin, who, according to the newspaper report, suffered a gunshot wound during the attack. Independent news outlet The Irrawaddy said the Golden Valley Warriors have denied that the 16 people detained were part of their operation. The junta has arrested 16 people including a 6-year-old girl on suspicion of involvement in the assassination of retired Brig-Gen Cho Tun Aung in Yangon on May 22. Since the coup and the outbreak of the civil war in Myanmar, targeted assassinations have been carried out against high-ranking active and retired military officers, as well as senior civil servants, local officials, business associates of the ruling generals and suspected informers. Soon after carrying out the assassination, the Golden Valley Warriors said in a statement posted on Facebook that Cho Tun Aung had been teaching internal security and counterterrorism at Myanmar's National Defence College and was, by his actions, complicit in atrocities committed by the military in the ongoing civil war.
