Golf tournament raises $10k for charity

The 2025 Ruralco Golf Classic at the Tinwald golf course. PHOTO: SUPPLIED A $10,000 donation has been made to the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust following the Ruralco Golf Classic.
The golf tournament, which took place last month at the Tinwald course, saw 36 teams of four line up to compete, many from the rural industry.
It was won by team Daggy Ass, made up of Alister Maxwell, Rory Maxwell and Dayle Lucas.
Rural support trust co-ordinator Frances Beeston said the much-welcomed donation would help support the work of the trust in the community.
This included counselling and a planned rural professional breakfast later in the year, she said.
Ruralco chief executive officer Tony Aitken said the support of players and sponsors meant 100 per cent of the proceeds from entries, on-course challenges and raffles directly benefited the trust.
It also reflected Ruralco's ongoing commitment to Canterbury, strengthening community ties and backing local initiatives, he said.
"We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took part, whether by playing, sponsoring, or donating," Aitken said.
"This event was about more than just a round of golf – it was a show of solidarity and support for the people at the heart of our rural community.
"We are especially proud that the funds raised will stay local and directly assist Mid Canterbury farmers and their families."
The classic drew more than 100 players for a day full of camaraderie, fun, and fundraising.
Special thanks went to Ballance Agri Nutrients and Nutrien Ag Solutions for their joint platinum sponsorship of the event, FMG for supporting the Vintage Putt Off, and all raffle prize sponsors who helped make the day such a success, Aitken said.
"As a regionally focused cooperative, Ruralco's core purpose is to lower farm input costs for our members, and we're equally committed to supporting their well-being.
"Partnering with the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust is one meaningful way we can give back to the communities that support us." Rural Support Trust can be contacted by phone: 0800 787 254

Disability Taskforce Extended As Budget Funding Boosts System

Press Release – New Zealand Government Disability Support Services Taskforce was established to lead the implementation of these recommendations. That important work is progressing well, and I am now looking to the Taskforce to lead more work to further strengthen the system. Minister for Disability Issues The Disability Support Services Taskforce will be extended for a year to continue its progress in stabilising the disability support system and shaping it for the future. Minister for Disability Issues Louise Upston says the Taskforce has been extended to 30 June 2026, with its work further enhanced by a billion-dollar funding boost announced in last month's Budget. 'This Government is committed to the ongoing support of the disability community and delivering better outcomes for disabled people, their families and carers,' Louise Upston says. 'We've demonstrated this in Budget 2025, where the DSS Budget received $1 billion in additional funding over four years – that's about $250 million a year of new money. 'This includes $60 million a year in residential care funding increases and about $190 million a year for increases across all DSS services for cost pressures, including care in the community. 'We are making good progress in delivering for disabled people, and the Taskforce will continue to play a key role. 'In August 2024, the Independent Review made recommendations to manage increasing cost pressures faced by DSS. 'The Taskforce was established to lead the implementation of these recommendations. That important work is progressing well, and I am now looking to the Taskforce to lead more work to further strengthen the system. 'The Taskforce has already made significant progress to stabilise DSS, including: reviewing pricing and contracting arrangements for residential care, which are being implemented following Budget 2025 improving systems and processes for assessing performance and forecasting expenditure reviewing needs assessment and allocation, and flexible funding settings so they better meet the needs of disabled people, their whānau and carers. 'My expectation is that DSS will continue to involve the disability community in discussions about how disability support services are delivered. I'll have more to say on the next phase of work in the coming months,' Louise Upston says. Notes: New funding for DSS in Budget 2025 included: $1 billion over four years towards meeting the increasing costs of disability support services (including $240 million for residential care) and to support more people to access those services. $10 million over two years to address the increasing costs for services and support for people with an intellectual disability and complex care needs who live in secure or supervised care under the High and Complex Framework. This will also fund critical workforce training initiatives and essential infrastructure, including repairs and maintenance upgrades. $9.5 million over four years to recognise and respond to the Abuse in Care Royal Commission of Inquiry. This includes work to strengthen how DSS audits the quality of its services, critical incident and complaints management processes and systems, and to contribute to other cross agency work to improve recordkeeping and the capability of the disability workforce.

Generate's Impact Investment Wins Top Design Award

Back in 2022, Generate partnered with Community Finance to make a $14 million impact investment to finance 35 new homes for people in need, in partnership with Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust. It's now proud to report that the Willard Street project, completed in 2023, has now been recognised with an award for its high-quality homes that lead the way in design, performance and community impact. The Willard Street development won Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust a Gold Award (Residential) at the 2025 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards, presented by Master Builders. The awards celebrate projects that demonstrate innovation, quality and collaboration across New Zealand's building sector. Willard Street includes 35 warm, comfortable homes designed for modern public housing. The new Homestar 7-rated homes replace 26 ageing bedsits built in the 1940s. This investment was one of Generate's impact investments, which aim to make a positive difference to the lives of New Zealanders, whilst providing fair market returns for our Generate KiwiSaver Scheme members. Generate Portfolio Manager, Ayrton Oliver, says this recognition further reinforces the value of the project. 'Working together with Community Finance and Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust shows the potential influence that investing can have on social outcomes for New Zealand, as well as the financial returns for Generate KiwiSaver Scheme members over the long-term,' he says. 'Responsible investing is one of our core values at Generate, so we often seek out investment opportunities that have the potential to drive both positive financial returns and positive social impact - we don't believe these need to be mutually exclusive.' In 2020 Generate was the first KiwiSaver scheme to invest in social housing via a $21 million investment managed by Community Finance into Salvation Army Community Bonds. That investment supported 118 warm, dry, affordable community houses across three locations.
