After 600 Years, Astronomers Finally Solve the Mystery of the Missing ‘Guest Star'

In October 1408, in Ming Dynasty China, court astronomers recorded a strange celestial event: a bright yellow object, unmoving in the sky, shining steadily for over ten nights. It was described as 'as large as a cup' and 'pure yellow color, smooth and bright'—a sight so notable that it prompted formal documentation by imperial officials. For centuries, this 1408 'guest star' has been a historical curiosity with no clear-cut identity. But thanks to a new discovery, astronomers think they've finally figured out the source.
In a recent paper posted to the preprint server arXiv, researchers led by Boshun Yang, an astronomer at the University of Science and Technology of China, report an overlooked report by Hu Guang, a court official in charge of 'congratulatory memorials and laudatory poems addressed to the emperor,' as described in the paper. This official document from the Imperial Astronomical Bureau provides a fuller, more authentic account than previous descriptions of the event and, crucially, allowed the researchers to rule out the possibility of a forged or misinterpreted record.
The memorial describes the object as stationary in the southern Niandao asterism—in the part of the sky now associated with the constellations Cygnus and Vulpecula—and visible for more than 10 days. Unlike comets or meteors, which streak across the sky, this object stayed put and maintained its brightness, suggesting it was a star.
Specifically, the event recounted by Hu Guang has the characteristics of a nova, or the violent death of a star that suddenly flares in brightness before slowly dimming. The team posits the 1408 nova had 'plateau' characteristics, meaning its light stayed steady for an unusually long time.
Interestingly, the team also had to account for the subtle politics baked into the language of the record. Ancient Chinese astronomers were careful in how they described celestial phenomena when reporting to the emperor. To ensure that his outlook remained rosy, it was important that astronomical events channeled good vibes. They avoided ominous language in reports of the nova, which was described as 'yellow' and 'lustrous,' as opposed to it sporting 'spikes' or other details that could sound ominous, according to Universe Today.
By combining this new historical document with modern astrophysics, Yang's team argues that the 1408 guest star is almost certainly a nova—adding it to a growing list of ancient Chinese records that corroborate modern astronomical observations.
Like the well-known 1054 supernova that created the Crab Nebula—reported by the Chinese as it happened, and now vividly imaged by observatories like the Webb Space Telescope—this centuries-old observation shows how events relatively distant in human history are just blips in cosmic time. Furthermore, it provides a foundation for modern astronomy, which can use earlier accounts as a backdrop—and even a driver—for new discoveries.

What would it take for the United States to lose its hegemony to a rising power like China? Right now, America appears to be ahead economically and militarily. However, there is a stark difference between America's national strategy (insofar as one exists) and China's. The US under President Trump calls for regression. It seeks to restore a manufacturing economy that peaked in the 1950s—like an elderly man trying to restore hair where it hasn't grown for decades. It is doubling down on domestic oil, gas and coal. Through tariffs, disparagement of NATO and aggression towards allies like Canada and Denmark, the administration has alienated partners that long supported a US-led world order. Fusion will be a key element to become an energy superpower. (Wal van Lierop) China, meanwhile, has a tremendous lead in developing the economy of the future. It has a near monopoly on rare earth minerals, which are needed for electronics, renewable energy systems, defense technologies and more. China leads in solar, wind and batteries, the energy systems growing at the fastest rate. It is ahead in electric vehicles, industrial robotics and drones as well. It probably has achieved parity in artificial intelligence and may surpass the US soon. If China were to take Taiwan, it would control the global market for advanced chip manufacturing. In the background, but probably most importantly, China may be on track to commercialize fusion energy before the US or its disgruntled allies. Unlike the US, China has no domestic energy industry with vocal lobbyists (and purchasable politicians) to slow progress. It is funding fusion as a national strategy while private fusion companies in the West are at the mercy of investors that, for the most part, chase low risk and quick returns. Fusion promises cheap, plentiful, baseload energy without carbon emissions. AI, data centers and industrial robotics powered by fusion would produce goods and services at much lower costs than value chains dependent on fossil-fired electricity. Militaries built on swarms of small, cheap, electronic drones and robots—powered by small, distributed fusion facilities deep underground, safe from attack—would have an edge over competitors using large, expensive, petroleum-powered vehicles with vulnerable supply chains. I cannot overstate the ramifications of China developing fusion first. As an analogy, imagine if Japan and Germany had uncovered vast reserves of oil at home in the 1920s. American and Soviet oil gave the Allies a strategic advantage over the Axis powers. Had the situation been reversed, World War II could have ended differently. While private fusion companies in the West have raised about $8 billion total, China is investing at least $1.5 annually into fusion projects—double what the US government spends. Japanese and German investments in fusion don't even come close. Canada, for the record, has no fusion funding strategy. Moreover, the government of British Columbia, home of industry leader General Fusion, seems not to understand the value of this crown asset.* On all fronts nuclear, China is leaping ahead. In April, its scientists added fresh fuel to an operational thorium molten salt reactor—a first. The thorium reserves found in Inner Mongolia, an autonomous region of China, could theoretically meet Chinese energy demand for thousands of years. The kicker: this reactor design originated in the US. As project lead Xu Hongjie put it, 'The US left its research publicly available, waiting for the right successor. We were that successor." Moreover, in January, China's Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) sustained a fusion reaction for 1,066 seconds, setting a new record. Its Burning Plasma Experimental Superconducting Tokamak (BEST) fusion reactor could come online by 2027 and is expected to produce five times the amount of energy it consumes. When BEST announces this milestone, Western fusion companies may be announcing that they've run out of funding. To China, fusion is not a startup project—it's a matter of national interest and security. Its scientists are patenting more fusion-related technologies than any other single country and graduating more doctorates in fusion-related fields. And because China is the top refiner and exporter of the critical minerals needed in fusion reactors (e.g., for magnets), no external force is going to slow their progress. In the meantime, China has a cheap gas station next door—Russia—supplying all the fossil fuels China could need in exchange for support in its war with Ukraine. That support includes critical minerals needed by Russian arms manufacturers. Is fusion energy, along with other Chinese-dominated technologies, enough to end US hegemony? In 1988, historian Paul Kennedy published The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers, a book that tried to explain the relative success (and failure) of powerful states. According to Kennedy, their rise and fall '…shows a very significant correlation over the longer term between productive and revenue-raising capacities on the one hand and military strength on the other.' Essentially, states must balance economic prosperity with strategy. Technological breakthroughs are vital to both. Innovation creates wealth, which enables the state to invest in defense and win wars. While underinvestment in defense leaves the state vulnerable to other powers, overextension and overspending on defense can run an economy into the ground, leaving it unable to sustain a strong military. Now, picture a great power—China—with a military to rival the US and fusion reactors that provide virtually unlimited energy. Imagine the clout China would have in establishing ports, military bases and consumer markets around the world if it could license that fusion technology. A China that exceeds the US in energy, industry, intelligence, mobility and defense is positioned to usurp it. Of course, China could bungle its advantage. Authoritarian regimes have a habit of mismanaging internal dissent, falsifying reality and making preventable mistakes. The rise of China is inevitable, but the self-inflicted decline of the US and its allies isn't. BEIJING — For all the attention on U.S.-China competition in artificial intelligence, new studies point to China's rapid rise in biotechnology, especially for drug and agricultural development. Out of five critical tech sectors, "China has the most immediate opportunity to overtake the United States in biotechnology," the Harvard Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs said Thursday in its release of a "Critical and Emerging Technologies Index," covering AI, biotech, semiconductors, space and quantum. While the U.S. is still the leader in all five, "the narrow U.S.-China gap [in biotech] suggests that future developments could quickly shift the global balance of power," the report said. The assessment echoes growing concerns in Washington. In fact, the U.S. National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology struck a more urgent tone in an April report, citing two years of research. "There will be a ChatGPT moment for biotechnology, and if China gets there first, no matter how fast we run, we will never catch up," the bipartisan Congressional commission said in the report, referring to the transformative chatbot released by U.S.-based OpenAI. "Our window to act is closing. We need a two-track strategy: make America innovate faster, and slow China down," the commission said. It recommends that the U.S. government spend at least $15 billion over the next five years to support the domestic biotech sector. China's biotech industry has evolved to the point that U.S. and European pharmaceutical giants in the last several months have spent billions to acquire China-developed drugs that could treat cancer if commercialized with regulatory approval. In March, British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca announced it will invest $2.5 billion in a research and development center in Beijing. The Harvard Belfer Center pointed out that China's biotech strengths stem from its "dominance in pharmaceutical production and manufacturing," in addition to having more human talent than the U.S. China also has a "more flexible regulatory regime and the ability to push things out faster," Cynthia Y. Tong, one of the Harvard report's authors, told CNBC in an interview Thursday. She noted that the U.S. tends to have a longer approval process, as well as more drawn out research and development period. And just as China is developing its biotech sector, reports from the U.S. biotech hub of Cambridge and Boston are revealing layoffs and empty labs. China has long used multi-year plans and preferential state policies to encourage the development of key technologies. Biotech is no different, gaining high-level support back in 2007. "Currently, the U.S. government has no cohesive, intentional biotechnology strategy, while China is gaining ground thanks to its aggressive and carefully coordinated state-led initiatives," the U.S. security commission said. The worry is that just as Chinese restrictions on rare earths start to hit car manufacturers, Chinese dominance in biotech could become yet another form of leverage for Beijing over the U.S. and other countries. "The likelihood there's going to be cooperation [between the] U.S. and China on anything is very low, in some ways least likely on biotech and AI" because of the congressional report, said Eric Rosenbach, director of the defense, emerging technology, and strategy program at Harvard's Belfer Center. He was chief of staff at the U.S. Department of Defense from 2015 to 2017. He expects more U.S. pressure on China. It remains to be seen what that would mean in practice for businesses — though some say the future of biotech development is inherently global. Insilico Medicine, a startup using AI to cut drug discovery costs, relies on a global team spread across China, North America and the Middle East, according to its founder and CEO Alex Zhavoronkov. On Tuesday, the company announced with a paper in Nature Medicine that it was the first to see successful clinical testing with an AI-discovered drug. While Insilico's AI work typically happens in Canada and Abu Dhabi, the chemical testing and experiments are done in China, Zhavoronkov said, adding that the head of clinical development is in Boston. He declined to comment on a commercialization timeline in light of conversations with regulators. Other data shows that China has surpassed the U.S. in the number of clinical trials conducted, seen significant patent growth and boasts the most life sciences construction activity in the world. China-based Capital O venture partner Yang Fan, who previously worked in the pharmaceutical industry, said he expects the best biotech companies of the future will navigate different countries' regulations and use resources across the globe, if not benefit from arbitrage opportunities given different requirements and cost of entry in various markets. "The Chinese market is like a big supermarket for anything that can be commoditized, AI or biotechnology," he said, adding that new startups in China have to be "really good" to stand out. As AI drives innovation costs down, Fan predicts that in biotech, "the real DeepSeek moment is probably going to happen in five years."

Instead of minimizing such concerns, the US should leverage them to forge rules that will make space safer for everyone. Talks about establishing norms of behavior in space have been stalled for years at the United Nations, as Russia and China have pushed instead for a legally binding treaty banning the deployment of weapons in orbit. Golden Dome helps explain why. Traditionally, space-based missile defense has been considered destabilizing because it encourages adversaries to build up their arsenals in response, and because a truly successful shield could encourage the US to launch a nuclear first strike, confident it could deflect any counterattack.
