Woman dies after clinging to moving car during BD1 fare disagreement

Clinging to the door of a moving car over a BD1 fare, a woman was dragged along the road and fatally injured after a night out at a hotel.
The driver, an Arab man, has been sentenced to seven years in prison and will be deported after serving his time.
The incident took place in the early hours of 6 December last year.
The woman and two others had been at a hotel until after 2am.
They arranged a lift with the man, who asked for BD3. One of the women argued that the distance was short and offered BD2. A quarrel broke out.
Dispute
During the dispute, the man was said to have insulted the women. Matters worsened when the victim held onto the car door.
Instead of stopping, the driver pulled away at speed. The woman lost her grip, fell, and was dragged along the road.
She was rushed to hospital but died four days later from head injuries and broken bones. A forensic doctor told the court that she suffered complications from the injuries.
He explained that she had been given fluids and medication during her stay in hospital, which made it impossible to know if she had taken drink or drugs beforehand.
Angry
One of the witnesses, a woman from the same country as the victim, said the driver became angry when they refused to pay the full fare.
She said the victim clung to the car's window before it moved.
The driver kept going, she said, even though it was clear the woman was hanging on.
The High Criminal Court found the man guilty of assault leading to death.
He was convicted of knowingly driving off while the woman was still clinging to the vehicle.
Death
The court ruled that he did not mean to kill her, but his actions led to her death.
The High Criminal Appeals Court has set 14 April to hear more witnesses.
The Public Prosecution has been told to carry out the necessary steps before the next hearing.
