Ex-Wales coach Gatland takes up role in Uruguay

Yahoo6 days ago

Warren Gatland has taken up an advisory role in Uruguayan rugby three months after ending his second spell as Wales head coach.
The 61-year-old New Zealander will join Uruguay's professional club side Penarol for the Super Rugby Americas (SRA) play-off finals.
Gatland left his job as Wales head coach in February, two games into the 2025 Six Nations after a record-breaking run of 14 successive Test match defeats.
SRA semi-finalists Penarol announced his short-term role on social media declaring, "Welcome Warren Gatland".
The Montevideo-based club added: "The legendary New Zealand coach joins Penarol as an advisor to [head coach] Ivo Dugonjic and the entire Penarol staff to put all his knowledge to work for the team."
Reports from South America say Gatland will also contribute to Uruguay's bid to reach the Rugby World Cup, with a qualifier against Paraguay in August before potentially playing either Chile or Brazil for a place at the 2027 tournament in Australia.

Gatland is one of rugby's most successful coaches, with spells at Connacht, Wasps, Waikato and Super Rugby side Chiefs in addition to an international career which began at the helm of Ireland in 1998.
He led the British and Irish Lions to a series victory against Australia in 2013 and a draw against the All Blacks four years later.
In his first spell as Wales head coach, from 2007 to 2019, he guided the side to three Grand Slams and two World Cup semi-finals.
Wales even briefly topped the world rankings in August 2019 after a record 14-match unbeaten run. During that first stint in charge Gatland recorded 70 wins in 125 games, with 53 defeats and two draws, a success rate of 56%.
However, having returned following the sacking of Wayne Pivac in 2022 he presided over statistically the worst Wales side in their 144-year international rugby history, with 14 successive Test losses. Gatland's second spell brought only six wins and 20 defeats in 26 matches, a success rate of less than 25%.
The side have still to halt a losing run stretching back to a World Cup victory over Georgia in October 2023. Under caretaker Matt Sherratt, Wales' record run of Test defeats has been extended to 17.
The search for a full-time successor to Gatland is being led by recently appointed Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) director of rugby Dave Reddin, with Scotland defence coach and former Ospreys boss Steve Tandy a leading target.
Penarol became Uruguay's first professional rugby club when founded in 2019 and are top of the SRA table. Victory over Argentina's Pampas in their final regular-season game will secure them a home semi-final.
Penarol provide the majority of the players in the Uruguay national side.

🎥 Neymar sent off in possible Santos farewell, silly red card

In what could be his last game for his home club FC Santos, Neymar certainly didn't cover himself in glory and received a truly curious yellow card. Due to injury, it was only his second start since his return in January. This was also over after 76 minutes because the Brazilian scored a goal in the style of the Hand of God. Advertisement The already warned superstar let himself be carried away with this action, but apparently forgot that, unlike Diego Maradona, he would be exposed by about 100 camera angles during his cheating action. Neymar quickly became the laughing stock on the net, instead of the heroic goal scorer of his team. Santos lost the duel against Botafogo 1-0 with a man down and is currently in a relegation spot after eleven matchdays. Since Neymar's contract expires on June 30 and the Brazilian league is on hold due to the Club World Cup until mid-July, this inglorious action could actually have been his last for Santos. The signs are currently pointing to another club change. Advertisement This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. Colón reject Forneris bid: what other options do Racing have?

Colón reject Forneris bid: what other options do Racing have? These days, Racing Club is focused on the transfer market, and has already set its sights on one of its targets: Alan Forneris. The young midfielder who plays for Colón has been the main target at the Academy to strengthen the squad for the second half of the season. Advertisement Racing has already made an offer but Colón rejected it as insufficient. New offer or other options? According to information from Racing de Alma, the Academy offered one million dollars for Alan Forneris, intending to include in the negotiation the card of Germán Conti, who has no place in Gustavo Costas' team. While Conti is also wanted by Belgrano, Colón is not interested in the central defender, and rejected Racing's million-dollar offer. The Sabalero demands two million for Fornaris, and also wants to keep 20% of his card. This week it will be decided whether Racing meets Colón's demands to add Forneris, or changes its strategy and looks for other names to strengthen the midfield. Advertisement In this regard, other players that the board led by Diego Milito would have in mind have already been leaked. The first is Lautaro López, a 20-year-old midfielder who plays for Montevideo City Torque in Uruguay, and who has experience in the Argentina Under-20 team. Another option is Facundo Di Biasi, a 19-year-old central midfielder who plays for Gimnasia y Esgrima in La Plata. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence.
