Man arrested on suspicion of murder after 16-year-old hit by car on pavement

A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a teenager who was an 'entirely innocent bystander' was hit by a car which appeared to mount the pavement, police have said.
Graphic CCTV footage of the incident in the Darnall area of Sheffield appears to show the car veer into the opposite carriageway before hitting the 16-year-old at speed.
South Yorkshire Police said on Thursday that a man had been arrested in Kent on suspicion of murder.
Three people – a 45-year-old woman and two men aged 26 and 46 – have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, the force said.
All four remain in custody.
Detectives said they believe a grey Audi drove towards three electric bikes, colliding with one rider, who suffered serious injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.
The Audi then collided with the teenager and failed to stop at the scene, officers said.
Detective Chief Inspector Benjamin Wood said: 'This is a tragic incident in which an entirely innocent bystander, who was going about his daily business, has sadly lost his life.
'Our thoughts are with the boy's loved ones and we remain focused on securing justice for them.'
Mr Wood said: 'We know that this incident will have caused concern in the local community, and we have a team of detectives working at pace to piece together the circumstances which unfolded.
'We're aware of footage being shared online and I'd like to reiterate our message to the public to withhold from speculating or circulating videos which may cause distress to the boy's family.
Detective Chief Inspector Benjamin Wood said: 'This is a tragic incident in which an entirely innocent bystander, who was going about his daily business, has sadly lost his life.
'If you have any footage, imagery or information that may help our investigation then please share this directly with us, it may form an important part of our inquiries.
'We are also keen to hear from the riders of two electric bikes who were in the area at the time of the incident.'
Officers were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Staniforth Road shortly after 4.50pm on Wednesday.
Mojid Khan said the boy came to rest at the gates of his Staniforth Road wholesale catering business, and his staff were the first on the scene after hearing the collision.
He said he arrived half an hour later and was shocked to see what his CCTV system had recorded.
Mr Khan said on Thursday: 'When it happens on your doorstep, literally, it does affect you. It's quite horrific to see how it happens.'
He said: 'I think it's a local lad that's passed away and another local lad that got injured on a motorbike. It's shocking for us as a community.
'The disturbing thing is that this is not the first time that this has happened. It seems every few months something like this is going on.
'I think that's a matter for our politicians to do something about.'
He said: 'Tomorrow is our Eid festival. That's going to hit them (the boy's family) even harder.
'It should be a happy day. I'm really sad for the family. Their loss is going to be that much greater tomorrow.'
Mr Khan said people used the road outside his business 'like a racetrack', and there were increasing problems with quad bikes and scooters.
'I have children in this area who go to school, who go to work, and other family members going to the local shops,' he said.
'It's quite distressing and disturbing to know this kind of thing is happening on a regular basis.'
Mr Khan said it was a close-knit community, in which he had worked since 1978, but speeding motorists and gang problems had begun to blight the area in recent years.
People began to lay flowers outside Mr Khan's business as the large police presence in the area dispersed on Thursday.
Debris from the collision could still be seen in the road, at the junction between Staniforth Road and Barnardiston Road.

Teenager killed in Sheffield crash came to UK months ago 'for a better future'

A teenager who died after being hit by a car in Sheffield had recently come to the UK from Yemen looking "for a better future", his loved ones said. Abdullah Yaser Abdullah Al Yazidi, 16, wanted to be "friends with everybody" and would "light up" people's faces with a big smile", according to his relatives and friends. After arriving in the UK from Yemen two or three months ago, he had devoted himself to learning English ahead of starting at college in September, they said. His relative, Saleh Alsirkal, runs a corner shop that the teenager popped into just before he was . "His dad brought him over to change his life, to get a better future for his son, but this has happened and destroyed everything," said Mr Alsirkal. Mr Alsirkal said Abdullah was a "kind boy" who just wanted to look after his family, including his three sisters and was really enjoying learning English. "Every time he had a new word to learn, he was so excited about it," he said. "It meant a lot to him and he learned quick. Sometimes he would stay in the shop just so he could talk to people. He tried to be friends with everyone." "He wanted to be the main guy for the family. He was 16 years old, but he was a clever man," said Mr Alsirkal. Abdullah's friend, Oasmah Thabet, said the teenager "really cared for his family". "You can really tell the character of somebody by the support they give to their family," he said. "To the people who would come around and just say hello to him, he would light up their faces with a big smile. "I'd like to think that we related in the sense that both our families migrated from Yemen to here. "The reason our family came here was for a better life - to live the dream. "For something to happen like this and for your dreams to be cut so short, it's a tragic loss for the family and it's just a shock that can't be described." The teenager was walking along Staniforth Road, in the Darnall area of , when he was hit by the car. The grey Audi also hit an e-bike, leaving an 18-year-old man with serious injuries, before leaving the scene. Police are still questioning a 20-year-old man on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after he was arrested in Kent on Thursday. Read more from Sky News: A 26-year-old man was rearrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, after initially being arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. "This is a heartbreaking case in which a completely innocent boy has lost his life," said Detective Chief Inspector Benjamin Wood. "Our thoughts remain with Abdullah's family and our priority is securing justice for them. "A murder investigation has been launched and we have a team of detectives working around the clock. "I am renewing our message to not share footage of this incident which may cause further distress to Abdullah's loved ones." DCI Wood asked for anyone with footage or information to contact officers and said he was keen to hear from the riders of two electric bikes who were in the area at the time. Two people, a man, aged 46, and a woman, aged 45, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, have both been bailed pending further inquiries, police said.

Locals embrace family shattered by teen girl tragedy

A tightly knit community is rallying around the family of Pheobe Bishop after her two housemates were accused of murdering the 17-year-old. James Wood, 34, and Tanika Bromley, 33, were charged three weeks to the day after Pheobe missed a flight and vanished in southern Queensland. Police allege Wood and Bromley have moved Pheobe's body a number of times before they found her remains in a nearby national park on Friday. Police confirmed the remains, believed to be Pheobe, were found about 2.30pm on Friday near Good Night Scrub National Park, southwest of Bundaberg. Pheobe's mother Kylie Johnson was quick to share her grief on social media. "I didn't think my heart could break anymore then it did when you went missing, or when the charges were laid but this! This is ripping me apart ..." she posted on Facebook. Detectives have set up a crime scene where the body was found and continue to appeal for further information. Wood and Bromley were housemates with Pheobe on a property at Gin Gin, a quiet regional community near Bundaberg that has been left reeling from the tragedy. "There is a sense of 'this wouldn't happen here'," Bundaberg Mayor Helen Blackburn told AAP. "We believe our community to be kind and accepting. "To have this tragedy happen in our region ... it's been very difficult trying to make sense of it." The community has thrown its arms around Pheobe's family, with floral tributes laid outside the Gin Gin property she shared with Wood and Bromley. A candlelight vigil has been organised on Sunday where locals will pay tribute to the beloved teen. "We now need to come together as a community, support and care for one another as we try to move forward," Cr Blackburn said. Pheobe was last seen near Bundaberg airport about 8.30am on May 15 after booking a trip to Western Australia to see her boyfriend. Police allege Wood and Bromley drove Pheobe close to the airport but no one exited the car. Pheobe was allegedly murdered and her body moved more than once from the Good Night Scrub National Park, an hour's drive from the airport. Earlier on Friday, Ms Johnson said her family had been "shattered" by news of the murder charges but vowed to bring her daughter home. "We WILL bring Phee home I don't care how long it takes but we will get her home," she posted on Friday. Cr Blackburn said it had been "heart-wrenching" after the community held on to hope for weeks. The Gin Gin community had rallied around the missing teen's family during the search with a "Leave the Lights On for Pheobe" campaign. Locals posted photos on social media of their front lights switched on "to guide Pheobe home". "There is shock in the community but Pheobe's family have got devastation," Cr Blackburn said. "This was someone's daughter, sister, cousin, aunty. There are family and friends out there who are hurting. "Their lives will never be the same again." Wood and Bromley have been remanded in custody ahead of their next Bundaberg Magistrates Court appearance on August 11.
