Jaishankar, European Commission President Leyen discuss ways to deepen partnership
Brussels [Belgium], June 10 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to discuss efforts to deepen the partnership between India and the EU.
Jaishankar welcomed Leyen's strong condemnation of the recent terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam and solidarity in combating terrorism.
Sharing details regarding his meeting with Leyen on X, Jaishankar stated, 'Pleased to call on @EU_Commission President @vonderleyen this morning. Welcomed her strong condemnation of terrorist attack in Pahalgam and solidarity in combatting terrorism. Discussed efforts underway to deepen the India - EU partnership. Agreed on the potential benefits of stronger cooperation in trade, technology, connectivity and security for both our regions.'

Ursula von der Leyen stated that the 'strategic partnership' between India and the EU is 'getting stronger.' She stressed that India and the EU are working on a Strategic Agenda based on growth, with an ambitious Free Trade Agreement (FTA), tech, innovation, security, and defence.

Earlier in the day, Jaishankar interacted with members of the Indian community of Belgium and Luxembourg, discussing the steady progress of India-Belgium ties and its engagement with the European Union.
During the interaction, Jaishankar apprised the community of India's efforts to counter terrorism and promote the country's progress and prosperity.
Sharing the pictures of the interaction on X, Jaishankar wrote, 'Great to interact with members of the Indian community of Belgium and Luxembourg. Jaishankar began his visit to Belgium on Monday by meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation and combating terrorism.
He appreciated Belgium's support in combating terrorism, welcomed their solidarity, and emphasised the strong momentum in the India-EU partnership, highlighting the potential for collaboration in clean energy, mobility, and pharmaceuticals.
Sharing the details in a post on X, Jaishankar stated, 'Pleased to meet DPM & FM @prevotmaxime at the start of my visit to Belgium. Welcomed Belgium's support and solidarity in combatting terrorism. Jaishankar's visit to Brussels comes three months after Princess Astrid of Belgium led a 300-member economic mission to India.
During her visit to India, Princess Astrid met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jaishankar. During the meeting, the two sides discussed key areas such as labour migration, defence pharmaceuticals, diamonds, space exploration, and green energy. (ANI)

China, India's rise to power creating a certain new equilibrium: Jaishankar
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar while speaking at GMF Brussels Forum 2025 said that there is a complex equilibrium in the world as India and China have risen to power, and these countries also happen to be neighbours. Jaishankar said that apart from border issues, there are trade and economic issues as well. "But be that as it may, you have a rise of China, you have a rise of India now each one is creating a certain new equilibrium between them and the rising power in the world and then a much more complex equilibrium between the two rising powers who also happen to be neighbors and who sometimes have common neighbours as well," he said. "So it is an incredibly complicated matrix and there are different dimensions to it, there's the boundary dimension to it, there's the balances if you would, there are economic issues, trade issues," he added. Jaishankar said that there are concerns as India and China have quite different economic and political models, while some may think that these differences will put each other out. "There are concerns as we are in a way different economic, social values, models political models so when you look at this relationship it's far more textured and complicated than it would appear at first sight where people really think that you have this country and that country and one will balance the other one will set off the other," he said. Jaishankar said that unsettled boundary disputes play a huge role in their relations. "China- I mean it's an obvious fact, but still I have to say- China is an immediate neighbour, okay, it's a neighbor with whom we also have an unsettled boundary. So that's a big factor in our relations," he said. Jaishankar said that China and India have civilisational ties and have had a parallel rise. "We have a situation where China and India, who stand out because they're the only two countries with over a billion people, but also because they are two civilisational states in a way, they have a kind of parallel rise. The Chinese started their modernisation ahead of us because I think we had at that time governments perhaps who didn't do what they should have done in those early years," he said. When Jaishankar was asked if Europe is still naive about China, he said that in the last decade, or 15 years, there has been an evolution. "I would honestly would have said no, but I would caveat that answer. When I've been coming to Europe pretty much continuously now for about 15 years. Europe 15 or even 10 years ago was in a very different place, so I would point to a certain evolution in Europe's position and stance but I would also make the point it's a very differentiated picture," he said. Jaishankar added that not all of Europe has been open to that change, but there have been countries that have been more hard-headed. "Not all of Europe is obviously moving on the same speed and on the same wavelength, so there are some which have a different view, some who are more hard-headed. I would make that distinction vis-a-vis China now," he said. To this, the interviewer said, "It sounds like sort of where we were with Russia 15 years ago as well."

India, EU nearly 90% ready on market access in FTA talks, says Piyush Goyal

Security tightens in Bengal's 24 Parganas after clashes between police, miscreants
Security tightened in the Rabindra Nagar area of South 24 Parganas in West Bengal on Thursday after a clash broke out between Police and miscreants yesterday. Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal assembly, Suvendu Adhikari and other BJP leaders in the state alleged that a Shiva Temple was vandalised in Ward No. 7, Maheshtala, under the Metiabruz Assembly constituency, near Rabindra Nagar Police Station. Meanwhile, Adhikari on Thursday approached the SP of Diamond Harbour Police District and DGP of West Bengal to visit Maheshtala and meet the victims of the Hindu families. In a post on X, Adhikari said the visit is a step towards understanding the grievances of affected Hindu shopkeepers and families and ensuring their voices are heard. "I have approached the SP of Diamond Harbour Police District and DGP @WBPolice so that today, I, along with one MLA can visit Maheshtala under Rabindranagar Police Station to meet and express solidarity with the victims of the Hindu families and the affected Hindu shopkeepers who came under the attack of the Jihadis yesterday. This visit is a step towards understanding their grievances and ensuring their voices are heard. "I hope that the Administration doesn't obstruct my visit," Adhikari said on X. This comes months after violence in some parts of West Bengal in the wake of protests against the Waqf Board Amendment Act. Earlier, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, on Tuesday said the Trinamool Congress only extends full support to terrorism and is turning the state here into a "valley of extremists". Adhikari's response came in response to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's reported statement on the Pulwama attack. "TMC party extends full support to terrorism and extremists... People of Mamata Banerjee's party are turning Bengal into a valley of extremists and are protecting them," Adhikari said. The West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution conveying appreciation for the Indian armed forces for their recent action targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The resolution moved in the state Legislative Assembly on Tuesday also condemned the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's (J-K) Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 people, most of them tourists.
