Two Tennessee National Guard Blackhawk helicopters left McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base to fight wildfires near Chattanooga.
The National Guard received the request from the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency around 8 a.m. March 14, and the helicopters were deployed at 10 a.m., according to a Tennessee National Guard press release.
The helicopters are from Knoxville's 1-230th Assault Helicopter Battalion and are equipped with Bambi Buckets to pull hundreds of gallons of water from nearby sources to drop on flames.
The aircrew and soldiers will stay as long as they are needed.
Two wildfires have been reported near Chattanooga:
A wildfire in Marion County on Mullins Cove Road is around 130 acres and 80% contained.
A wildfire in Hamilton County on Hiram Avenue was 3 acres but it has been contained.
Dry conditions have led to wildfires throughout East Tennessee this month, though a weekend storm system may help with drought conditions.

Tropical Storm Barbara strengthens into a hurricane near Mexico
MIAMI — Tropical Storm Barbara has strengthened into a hurricane, the first of the eastern Pacific hurricane season. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Monday swells generated by the storm system will affect portions of the coast of southwestern Mexico during the next few days. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Hurricane Barbara was located about 155 miles (245 kilometers) southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. Its maximum sustained winds were clocked at 75 mph (120 kph). The storm's center was moving northwest at 10 mph (17 kph). But the storm was expected to bring heavy rainfall to coastal areas of Guerrero, Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco states, with the possibility of localized flooding. The hurricane center said swells from Barbara were likely to form life-threatening surf and rip current conditions along the southwestern Mexican coast, with gusty winds likely. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Cosme strengthened slightly Monday but remained well off the coast of Mexico, about 630 miles (1,015 kilometers) south-southwest of the tip of Baja California, the NHC said. At 2 a.m. local time it had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (80 kph) and was moving west-northwest at 9 mph (14 kph). Cosme is expected to reach near-hurricane strength on Monday before turning to the northeast and picking up speed Tuesday into Wednesday.

'I'm a little nervous after everything I've read about the Abol trail but I'm going to do it if weather permits! If you don't see me back on Substack notes again, that's where I am,' she wrote. Advertisement Baxter State Park Director Kevin Adam said the weather at Mount Katahdin on Sunday was cloudy with rain, sleet, and west winds reaching 30 to 40 miles per hour. Similar conditions were reported on Monday, he said. 'I have even seen some pictures with snow,' Adam said in an email to the Globe. 'Temperatures would have been in mid 30's, wind chill about 19. Monday temperatures were up into the 40's.' Baxter State Park Rangers expanded their search Tuesday morning with the assistance of more than 30 game wardens, including the Maine Warden Service Search and Rescue team and its K-9 team. The Maine Forest Service was also searching the area with three helicopters, along with a Blackhawk and a Lakota Helicopter outfitted with an infrared thermal imaging device from the Maine Army National Guard, officials said.
