John Oliver on AI slop: ‘Some of this stuff is potentially very dangerous'

The Guardian5 hours ago

John Oliver covered the dangers of AI on his weekly HBO show, calling it 'worryingly corrosive' for society.
On Last Week Tonight, Oliver said that the 'spread of AI generation tools has made it very easy to flood social media sites with cheap, professional-looking, often deeply weird content' using the term AI slop to describe it all.
He referred to it as the 'newest iteration of spam' with weird images and videos flooding people's feed with some people having 'absolutely no idea that it isn't real'.
Oliver said that it's 'extremely likely that we are gonna be drowning in this shit for the foreseeable future'.
With content such as this, 'the whole point is to grab your attention' and given how easy it's become to make it, the barrier of entry has been reduced.
Meta has not only joined the game with its own tool but it's also tweaked the algorithm meaning that more than a third of content in your feed is now from accounts you don't follow. 'That's how slop sneaks in without your permission,' he said.
There are monetisation programs for people who successfully go viral and now a range of AI slop gurus who will teach people what to do for a small fee.
It's 'ultimately a volume game like any form of spam' and has led to AI generators ripping off the work of actual artists without crediting them. But 'for all the talk of riches in those slop guru videos, the money involved here can be relatively small'.
It can be as little as a few cents and then sometimes hundreds of dollars if it goes mega-viral which means that a lot of it comes from countries where money goes further like India, Thailand, Indonesia and Pakistan,
One of the downsides is having to explain to parents that content isn't real. "If you see an animal that's so cute it defies reality and it's not Moo Deng, odds are it's AI,' he said.
There's also an environmental impact to the resources needed to produce it as well as the worrying spread of misinformation.
Oliver spoke about the many fake disasters that have been created with images and videos showing tornados and explosions and plane crashes that don't exist. 'Air travel is scary enough now without people making up new disasters,' he said.
Generative AI has also been used during the Israel-Iran conflict and posed problems for first responders with the flooding in North Carolina last year. It was also used by Republicans to show that Biden was not handling the latter situation well with fake images used on the right despite them being told they weren't real.
'It's pretty fucking galling for the same people who spent the past decade screaming 'fake news' at any headline they didn't like to be confronted with actual fake news and suddenly be extremely open to it,' he said.
While the spread wasn't as damaging as some head feared during last year's US election, AI is 'already significantly better than it was then'.
He added: 'It's not just that we can get fooled by fake stuff, it's that the very existence of it then empowers bad actors to dismiss real videos and images as fake.'
Oliver said it's all 'worryingly corrosive for the concept of objective reality' with platforms finding it harder to detect AI.
'I'm not saying some of this stuff isn't fun to watch, I'm saying that some of this stuff is potentially very dangerous,' he said.

Paige Spiranac reveals shocking benefit to wearing less clothes to play golf

Golf influencer Paige Spiranac has revealed a surprising benefit to wearing less clothing on the course, after playing like 's***' during a recent outing. 'If you've been following me for awhile you know I have this working theory that I play better when I wear less clothes,' she wrote on X above a photo of her in the polo. 'Can confirm that science is right once again. I played like [poop emoji] today.' The social media sensation is known for her more revealing outfits on the golf course The post drew plenty of humorous replies from Spiranac's fans as they teased the blonde social media star. 'Sorry to hear that,' one wrote on X. 'If this is true then I have an idea,' another said. And a third said: 'I didn't even recognize it was you. lolol.' The lighthearted post comes after Spiranac announced some big news in May. Savannah Chrisley teases huge new collaboration with the Trumps after controversial pardon

Savannah Chrisley has revealed that her parents, Todd Chrisley and Julie Chrisley, will be giving their first interview to Lara Trump following their controversial pardon from president Donald Trump last month. The television personality, 27, also confirmed that she has joined her mom and dad for the on-screen interview – which is scheduled to air on Fox News – as well as her brother Grayson Chrisley, 19. Addressing her followers in a video uploaded to Instagram, Savannah said: 'Alright all, we are ready to go. 'We're going to do the Lara Trump Show, and I am so excited. Mom and dad are going to be on and here we go.' In a separate post, Savannah shared a picture from the green room which revealed cans of diet coke laid out on a table. 'Diet coke = filming with the Trumps,' she captioned the snap. President Trump is a well-known consumer of Coca-Cola products and even installed a special button in the White House during his first term that would have the beverage promptly delivered to him. Ahead of the interview, Lara also teased the exclusive chat in a post uploaded to her Instagram profile. In the brief clip, she revealed that her son, Luke, had made beaded bracelets for her to wear on the show. 'When your son makes you a bracelet and asks "can you wear it on @foxnews?" You wear it for your interview with @savannahchrisley @toddchrisley @juliechrisley & @graysonchrisley,' she captioned the upload. She added that the interview will air on Fox News on Saturday, June 28 at 9pm. Lara, who is married to Eric Trump, kicked off her new show My View with Lara Trump on the Fox News Channel in February. The 42-year-old wed her husband – who is the third child and second son of president Trump - in 2014 and are parents to two children: Luke and Carolina. Some fans were quick to express their anticipation for Lara's special segment with the Chrisleys. 'Can't wait for this interview!' one enthused. Another agreed, adding: 'So ready to see this interview! The bracelet is awesome. He could have a side business. We would all buy them. So sweet!' Savannah's parents Julie and Todd - best known for their reality show Chrisley Knows Best and its spin-offs - were convicted in 2022 of defrauding banks out of $30 million. Julie, 52, had been serving her seven-year prison sentence in Kentucky, while her husband Todd, 56, was serving his 12-year sentence in Florida. They couple were pardoned by Trump last month. Savannah played an instrumental role in her getting her parents a presidential pardon. Speaking at a press conference alongside her dad on May 30, she said she was 'relentless' in her mission to get her parents out. 'The biggest misconception right now is I either paid for a pardon or slept for a pardon,' Savannah told press. 'If people knew the countless hours, the money, and the time that I spent doing to [Washington] DC, with not a meeting scheduled, and got on a plane and said, "I'm going to be in the right room at the right time and meet the right people.'' She continued: 'I have fought hard and I was exhausted and I begged for meetings. 'I was never too good to ask and that's the thing. 'People think, you're a celebrity, you're white, you have money, that we got an upper hand, but we didn't. I had to fight, and I was relentless, and that's how it happened.'

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's wedding: From the date to the guest list... here's what you need to know

A relationship that has captivated the nation from the very start is soon set to reach the next level. Billionaire Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos, 61, is set to wed former journalist Lauren Sanchez, 55, in just a few days. The couple, who have been together for over six years now, have been engaged since May 2023 and plan to finally wed. While the pair have been pretty public about much of their relationship, many details about their upcoming nuptials seems to be the opposite. Wedding planners have booked several different locations and plan to make a decision based on weather and potential protests that may occur - thus leaving many details a secret. Though the couple has tried to keep information about the wedding lowkey, there are a few things about the event that have become public knowledge. After all, it's difficult to hide the very public displays of wealth that a billionaire might take part in. From the mysterious wedding date to who will be in attendance to this wedding-of-the-century, here's everything you need to know about the upcoming Bezos-Sanchez wedding. When is Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's wedding? As with everything else about this wedding, there has been a lot of mystery surrounding when exactly the couple would tie the knot. There were consistent reports that it would be in late July, but the exact date was largely kept from the public. It was previously thought that the wedding would take place sometime between June 24 and June 29. But sources have reported that the pair have solidified June 27 as the wedding date with smaller celebrations taking place both before and after. Where is it taking place? It's no secret that Bezos and Sanchez are set to be married in Venice, Italy - but there has been less concrete information about the exact venue of the wedding. The couple has reportedly rented out the entirety of San Giorgio - a prestigious island in Venice - for their guests for six days. It was initially thought that Bezos' multimillion dollar superyacht Koru (that he's been photographed spanking Sanchez on) would play a part in the festivities - but it is now believed that this will instead be moored near Croatia with the happy couple taking a helicopter to Venice. Who is on the guest list? While it's been rumored that there will be slightly fewer than 200 guests at the wedding, no official guest list has been released. But there are a few celebs you should expect to see at the luxurious Venice wedding. In a Bachelorette trip in May, Sanchez included Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian, and Eva Longoria in the festivities - and can likely expect the group to be present during the nuptials. Katy Perry was also included at the Bachelorette, but due to alleged arguments between her and husband Orlando Bloom, it's not confirmed if any of the couple will be in attendance. Based on the high-profile duo's documented friendships over the years, fans might also see guests including Jessica Alba, Elsa Marie Collins, Bill Gates, and perhaps even members of the Trump family. How much did the wedding cost? For someone who is quite literally a billionaire, it's hard to imagine what the wedding budget looks like. This is especially true considering that Sanchez's engagement ring alone reportedly cost $2.5 million. BRIDES reported that the couple was spending about $10 million on the wedding - about $50,000 per guest, though many others are guessing that the wedding will range anywhere from $7 million to $50 million. And it seems like the couple is circulating most of this money in Venice, as it was reported that 80 percent of the wedding provisions would come from local vendors. Alongside food, drink, and renting out an island, this money is likely to go toward 'entertainment' for the guests - although the specifics haven't been revealed. But each guest will be leaving with their own goodie bags - including special custom glassware by designer Laguna B. There were also reports that water taxis and gondolas had been put on hold for the wedding, and that all nine of the city's yacht ports were booked. Why are people protesting? Despite the buzz around the wedding, not everyone is excited for the Bezos-Sanchez event. In fact, there have been several demonstrations in Venice where locals are protesting Bezos' decision to have his wedding in their city. Protestors holding signs saying 'No Space for Bezos' came out to show their disapproval of Bezos' space tourism company. Many also called for the billionaire to pay more money in taxes. Others angrily pointed out Bezos' management - claiming that the billionaire pays his Amazon staff 'poverty wages' while being able to rent out an island for his own personal life. These protests are so prevalent that Bezos reportedly had to change his security plans for the wedding due to safety concerns.
