Bulls' finals history is irrelevant, says Jake White

Bulls coach Jake White isn't too focused on the fact that neither them nor Leinster have managed to win a United Rugby Championship (URC) final despite a history of promising campaigns.
The Bulls will take on Leinster in the 2024/25 URC Grand Final at Croke Park on Saturday, 28 June. Since the competition's inception in 2021, both teams have walked a similar path during its short history.
This will mark the Bulls' third final appearance since the start of the competition. While it will be Leinster's first, they have finished at the top of the standings at the conclusion of the league stage in three of the four seasons.
But, come Saturday, the past will matter not, according to White.
'It's different teams, different venues, and different times of the year, ' the Bulls mentor said during a press briefing in Dublin.
'People look into so many things…'this team loses semis, this team loses finals, this team has so many Irish players'. That is irrelevant.'
While the fact that the Bulls have been successful in four of their five meetings with Leinster is a positive on its own, White focused on his team's progress over the years as opposed to zooming in on historical facts.
'This group of players have probably far exceeded expectations of anybody in the last four years,' he said.
'We've made three finals, and the average age of our team over the last four years has been the youngest of most teams in the competition.
'Many of the teams we play are laden with internationals who play in front of big crowds and in big stadiums in pressure situations. That defines players who are good enough.
'I'm not saying that we're not aware that we've had three finals, but we are also very aware that we have exceeded what everyone has expected, and we have probably batted above our weight for a long time.
'Hopefully, this game will be the one where we will learn from the two other opportunities we had to win this competition.'

Ngidi fires Proteas back into contention on day of supersonic Test cricket

Supersonic Test cricket. That's what day two turned into. What at tea looked like being a cruise for Australia, suddenly went haywire. There was redemption for Lungi Ngidi. A stunning blow from Wiaan Mulder. The DRS worked in South Africa's favour. And as a result, a World Test Championship final at Lord's that looked to be over at tea was brought back to life on Thursday. That it was Ngidi who provided the resuscitation was the biggest shock. But Test cricket provides that kind of opportunity. By the end, Australia, on 144/8 in the second innings after South Africa's collapse to 138 in their first, had a precious, but still precarious, lead of 218. Much-maligned, understandably so, after such a horrible display on the opening day, Ngidi was given the ball immediately after the tea interval. There were groans all around from the many South African fans here and numerous ex-players either watching socially or on official commentary duties.

Hashim Amla and Graeme Smith inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame

JOHANNESBURG - The ICC announced seven new additions to the ICC Hall of Fame on Monday, which included two of South Africa's former great cricketers Hashim Amla and Graeme Smith. The ICC Hall of Fame pays tribute to the best players the game has seen, individuals whose careers have shaped cricket's legacy and inspired generations. Amla was the first South African batsman to score a Test-match triple century, making 311 not out against England at the Oval in 2012. Amla has a tally of almost 19,000 international runs for South Africa. With 55 international centuries to his name and has been selected six times across ICC Team of the Year selections across formats. He's regarded as one of the first three-format greats. He often found himself playing alongside Smith. Graeme Smith was 22 when he captained the Proteas and led South Africa in a world-record 109 Tests, with the former opening batsman the only player to captain a Test team for over 100 matches. He was exceptional as an opening batter, having scored 9,265 runs in 117 matches. Smith led the country in 109 Tests and won 53 of them. Included was India's Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Australia's Matthew Hayden and New Zealand's Daniel Vettori, with former Pakistan captain Sana Mir and England's Sarah Taylor recognised for their contributions to the women's game.

Evan Roos' Springbok omission: It's not personal, says Rassie

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has explained Evan Roos' initial omission from the 54-man squad that was named for the Tests against the Barbarians, Italy, and Georgia. The Stormers loose forward was called up following Bulls No 8 Cameron Hanekom's hamstring injury. Hanekom sustained the injury during the United Rugby Championship semi-final victory against the Sharks at Loftus. Speaking during a press conference on Thursday, Erasmus said: 'It wouldn't be a nice thing to talk team selection now, but I saw the things people wrote. It's definitely not a personal issue.' Erasmus went on to explain that Roos' form – combined with the depth at eight – led to other players getting the nod ahead of him. 'At this stage he's just competing with the best. We all have different opinions on who plays well and who doesn't. In our opinion, he wasn't playing as well as the other guys and that's normally the reason we don't select guys. 'At this stage, Juarno [Augustus; failed to pass an exit medical at Northhampton Saints ahead of his move to Ulster] and Cameron [Hanekom] are out. Evan was not playing as well as the other guys. That's not to say he isn't Springbok level, it's just that Kwagga Smith, Cameron, Juarno, and Siya [Kolisi] can all play eight. 'A guy can be good enough, but there are just two or three guys who we think fit better into what we are trying to do as a Springbok team. Maybe he just doesn't fit that plan or the other guys are a bit more settled.' The Springboks will kick off their season with a historic match against the Barbarians on Saturday, June 28.
