'Major drug trafficker' gets lengthy prison sentence after leaving OD victims to go to Wendy's: authorities
A New York drug kingpin was sentenced to a lengthy prison term Tuesday after he left two overdose victims to go to a Wendy's restaurant.
Holbrook resident Russell Defreitas, 55, was recently found guilty of operating as a major drug trafficker and 91 other charges.
He was sentenced to 53 years in prison, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office. In a press release Tuesday, the office said Defreitas was involved in "a large-scale cocaine and fentanyl trafficking operation in Suffolk County which caused two fentanyl overdose deaths."
The incident happened May 9, 2023, when the two victims — a male and a female — were in a hotel room booked in Defreitas' name.

"When the female overdosed in the hotel room, Defreitas directed his associates not to call 911," the DA's office said in a statement. "Defreitas removed drugs and other evidence from the hotel room and then went to eat at a nearby Wendy's.

"Hours later, Defreitas allowed one of his associates to call 911. By that time, both the female and male had fatally overdosed in the hotel room."
Defreitas was arrested two days later. Authorities found loads of incriminating evidence after executing search warrants on his trailer and hotel room.
"During those searches, law enforcement recovered cocaine, fentanyl, two loaded firearms, cutting agents, drug packaging materials, scales used to weigh narcotics, and numerous hotel room key cards," the statement explained.

"Additionally, at the time of his arrest, Defreitas was found to be in possession of bank cards in the names of two of his overdose victims."
Defreitas was sentenced Tuesday after defending himself in court without a lawyer. In a statement, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said Defreitas' sentencing "highlights the urgent need for stronger legislation," and he endorsed a bill called Chelsey's Law
"The passage of Chelsey's Law in New York State would give prosecutors additional tools to hold dealers accountable when their products cause death," the DA said. "This defendant's actions directly led to two overdose fatalities, yet our current laws don't allow us to charge these preventable deaths as the homicides that they are.
"Chelsey's Law would ensure that those who profit from dealing deadly substances face consequences proportionate to the devastation they cause in our communities."

Israel to expel French nationals on Gaza aid boat by end of week
Israel is to expel by the end of the week four French nationals held after security forces intercepted their Gaza-bound aid boat, France's foreign minister said Wednesday, as an Israeli NGO said one of the French campaigners was briefly put in solitary confinement. The announcement came as France's prime minister accused activists aboard the boat -- who hoped to raise awareness about the humanitarian situation in war-torn Gaza -- of capitalising on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for political attention. The four, who include Rima Hassan, a member of European Parliament from the hard-left France Unbowed (LFI) party who is of Palestinian descent, will be deported on Thursday and Friday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on X. They were among 12 people on board the Madleen sailboat which was carrying food and supplies for Gaza before it was intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters off the besieged Palestinian territory on Monday. Four, including two French citizens and Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg, agreed to be deported immediately. The remaining eight were taken into custody after they refused to leave Israel voluntarily, according to Adalah, an Israeli rights NGO representing most of the activists. All 12 of them have been banned from Israel for 100 years. Adalah said on Wednesday that Israeli authorities had placed French MEP Hassan and Brazilian activist Thiago Avila in solitary confinement, with Hassan later removed. - 'Abandoning French prisoners' - "Israeli authorities transferred two of the volunteers -- the Brazilian volunteer Thiago Avila and the French-Palestinian European Parliament member Rima Hassan -- to separate prison facilities, away from the others, and placed them in solitary confinement," Adalah said in a statement. The NGO later said that Hassan had been moved back to Givon prison in Ramla, near Tel Aviv, while Avila remained in isolation. When asked for comment, Israel's prison authority referred AFP to the foreign ministry, which said it was checking the reports. Adalah said Hassan was put in isolation after writing "Free Palestine" on a prison wall. The NGO said Brazilian activist Avila was placed in isolation "due to his ongoing hunger and thirst strike, which he began two days ago." "He has also been treated aggressively by prison authorities, although this has not escalated to physical assault," it added. The leader of Hassan's LFI party in parliament, Mathilde Panot, said France's prime minister Francois Bayrou had failed to condemn Israel's actions. The party's boss, Jean-Luc Melenchon, accused Bayrou of "abandoning the French prisoners", and called on President Emmanuel Macron to step in. "These activists obtained the effect they wanted, but it's a form of instrumentalisation to which we should not lend ourselves," Bayrou responded in the National Assembly. It's "through diplomatic action, and efforts to bring together several states to pressure the Israeli government, that we can obtain the only possible solution" to the conflict, he added. Foreign Minister Barrot also rejected Panot's criticism, saying "the admirable mobilisation" of French officials had made a rapid resolution of the situation possible "despite the harassment and defamation that they have been subjected to". - Mounting pressure - France and Saudi Arabia are co-hosting a UN meeting later this month in New York on steps towards recognising a Palestinian state and reaching a so-called two-state solution to the conflict. Israel is facing mounting pressure to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza, whose entire population the United Nations has warned is at risk of famine. Israel's defence minister Israel Katz on Wednesday called on Egypt to block a hundreds-strong pro-Palestinian activist convoy from reaching Gaza, as the group arrived in the Libyan capital of Tripoli. Palestinian militant group Hamas on October 7, 2023 attacked Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,219 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of official figures. The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza says the retaliatory Israeli military offensive has killed at least 55,104 people, the majority civilians. The United Nations considers these figures to be reliable. Out of 251 taken hostage during the Hamas attack, 54 are still held in Gaza including 32 the Israeli military says are dead. burs-jh-acc/gv

Man barricaded in vehicle in West Rockhill: Bucks County DA
The Bucks County District Attorney's Office has confirmed a police incident is underway involving a person barricaded in a vehicle in West Rockhill. DA spokesman Manuel Gamiz said it was not confirmed as an active shooter situation. He also did not have a location for the police activity. The incident is being handled by Pennridge Regional Police. The incident is believed to be in the area of the Naceville Hotel, with a bar and restaurant on Ridge Road, in Sellersville, where they posted on Facebook that everyone inside was safe. According to a post on the Naceville Hotel Facebook page, "we are safe and sound at the Naceville hotel!!! It's been a crazy day thank you." The hotel dates back to 1843 in this rural part of Upper Bucks County. "All we know is that the car (with the suspect) drove by and then about a hundred police cars drove by," a Naceville employee who answered the phone at about 2:45 Wednesday afternoon said. The employee added that she and other staff had been in the restaurant all day when she was interrupted by who she later identified as a Pennsylvania State Trooper. "We'll be out of your hair pretty soon," the officer was heard saying to the employee. "It looks like they're packing it up now," the employee said when she returned. North Penn Now is reporting that numerous SWAT officers and police departments are staging near the hotel. Witnesses online reported a man was shooting out his car window on Ridge Road near a construction zone shortly around noon, according to online news site. Ridge Road in the area of County Line and Allentown roads is reported closed to traffic at 1 p.m. This is a developing story. Dozens arrested at pro-Gaza protest at Manhattan office building
Dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested Wednesday as they staged a sit-in in the lobby of a Midtown East skyscraper, demanding that a company in the building stop providing arms to Israel. Sporting shirts that read 'Stop Starving Gaza' and 'End the Siege,' more than 150 Palestinian and Jewish protesters sat down on the floor and refused to leave the lobby of the E. 45th St. building near Lexington Ave. beginning around 11 a.m. The protesters, members of the Palestinian Youth Movement and Jewish Voice for Peace, were demanding that Maersk, a shipping and logistics company in the building, stop shipping military equipment to the Israeli government. NYPD officers were called to the address and picked protesters up off the floor and took them to an awaiting police van. At least 50 had been taken into custody by the time the protest ended. Protesters also demanded that more food and aid be sent to Gaza following the detention of activists participating in the Freedom Flotilla that had planned to bring needed supplies to the war-torn area. Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was on the ship when it was intercepted on its way to Gaza, officials reported this week. Pro-Palestinian protests have been held in New York since Hamas brutally attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. During the ensuing conflict, some protesters have targeted New York City colleges, institutions and companies that either have accepted money from Israel or have supplied money to the country over the years. The exact number of protesters arrested Wednesday was not immediately disclosed. Charges were pending. A spokesman for Maersk said the company was aware of the protest. 'We are grateful the demonstration appears to have been generally peaceful with no reported damage to property, and all Maersk colleagues are safe,' the spokesman said.
