Cicadas start to emerge across the U.S.; how will Missouri and Illinois be impacted?
MISSOURI — Last year Missouri and Illinois experienced a 'cicada-geddon,' and now the cicadas are expected to emerge across the country again as soil temperatures begin to rise.
Last year, Missouri and Illinois experienced a long summer of 13-year Brood XIX and 17-year Brood XIII in 2024. While the double brood was a rare occurrence, cicadas are gearing up for their return, but this time in the eastern part of the country.
The Farmer's Almanac reports that cicada Brood XIV and potentially Brood I are gearing up as the many eastern states dive into the summer.

This time around, Missouri and Illinois will likely miss this year's cicada takeover. While nearby states such as Tennessee will potentially see the double brood alongside Indiana and Kentucky, which will only get Brood XIV. West Virginia and Virginia are also expecting to see the double brood.
Cicadas in eastern states are expected to emerge later in the spring as soil temperatures rise and trees are leafed out.

Crews working to repair Haysville sinkhole after heavy rain
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Work is underway to repair damage from a sinkhole on one of Haysville's streets. The sinkhole formed around 2 a.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of Sarah Lane, which is south of Riggs Park. The City of Haysville says flooding from Cowskin Creek washed out the solid and caused about a 15-foot section of road to collapse. The collapse also caused a water main to break. Weather Fact Wednesday: The Science Of Atmospheric Rivers
Everyone knows what a river is, but do you know about the concept of an atmospheric river? The majority of water vapor outside of the tropics is transported via atmospheric rivers, which are comparatively long, narrow areas in the atmosphere that resemble rivers in the sky. Since they are vital to the Earth's climate because they control a majority of the moisture flow from the tropics to the poles, they then have a hugh impact on sea ice, air temperatures, and other climate-related variables, since they have an effect in the growth of clouds. Not all atmospheric rivers are harmful though, as the majority are weak systems that often generate beneficial rain or snow that is necessary for the water supply. Unfortunately, the good also brings with it the bad. For instance, the commonly recognized 'Pineapple Express,' which can carry precipitation from Hawaii to the US West Coast, may bring about mudslides, gridlocked roads, and significant property and personal damage. Like hurricanes, atmospheric rivers are rated, but unlike hurricanes, their ratings take into account the possibility that they may also be helpful. Category 1 (weakest) to Category 5 (outstanding) are the ratings' ranges. Thus, the issue arises: do atmospheric rivers have an effect on D.C. and the surrounding area? Indeed, as atmospheric rivers have affected Washington, D.C. even though most are associated with the West Coast.
