MLB reinstates 4 players after yearlong bans for betting on baseball
Major League Baseball's one-year suspensions for betting on the sport ended for four players Thursday — San Diego starter Jay Groome, Athletics relief pitcher Michael Kelly, Philadelphia infielder José Rodríguez and Arizona reliever Andrew Saalfrank.
The A's announced they reinstated Kelly along with left-hander T.J. McFarland, who was on the injured list. They optioned right-handers Elvis Alvarado and Justin Sterner to Triple-A Las Vegas to make room on their big league roster.
Saalfrank was optioned to the Diamondbacks' rookie-level Arizona Complex League.
The Padres have not announced their plans for Groome, but the Athletic reported he was not offered a contract, making him a free agent.
The Phillies have not announced their intentions regarding Rodríguez.
Kelly was suspended for betting on baseball while in the minor leagues, and the other three minor leaguers were penalized for betting on big league games. Each player wagered less than $1,000. Saalfrank and Rodríguez played previously in the majors.
The players violated Major League Rule 21, which is posted in every clubhouse. They were handed mandatory one-year suspensions for betting on games in which they did not participate. If they had bet on any games they attended in person — even if they didn't play — they would have been banned for life.

(AP) — Turkey took advantage of a sloppy defense to beat the United States 2-1 in a rainy friendly on Saturday, dealing the Americans their third straight loss as Arda Güler and Kerem Aktürkoğlu scored in a 2-minute, 20-second span midway through the first half. Jack McGlynn scored 59 seconds in for the U.S., which was missing many regulars as coach Mauricio Pochettino revamped his roster following a dismal performance at the CONCACAF Nations League final four in March. Guardians ace Shane Bieber stays optimistic despite facing setback in rehab
CLEVELAND (AP) — Shane Bieber promised himself after undergoing Tommy John surgery last April that he would be honest about his rehabilitation process. Even though the Cleveland Guardians ace is going through his first setback, Bieber is trying to remain optimistic. Bieber is in the middle of a seven-day pause from throwing after experiencing soreness in his right elbow following his first rehab start on May 31 and a bullpen session on Tuesday. The right-hander was scheduled to make his second rehab start with Double-A Akron on Friday before being shut down. 'My mind went back to a very close buddy of mine said a few weeks or a few months back when I was starting bullpens. He was like, 'Just don't freak out. If you get a setback, everybody gets at least one,'' Bieber said before Saturday's game against the Houston Astros. 'I was hoping to be that anomaly, but at the same time, maybe it's just part of the process and I'm trying to listen to my elbow and my body and do what's best for myself and the team in the long term.' Bieber will be checked again the middle of next week before the team's medical staff and specialist Dr. Keith Meister decide the next steps. Bieber threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings in an Arizona Complex League game on May 31, which was his 30th birthday. The 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner faced nine batters, allowed one hit and struck out five while throwing 42 pitches.
