
World Retail Congress: On commercial chief talks sustainability, Switzerland and wholesale
The World Retail Congress this week saw two movers and shakers in global sports on stage together with JD Sports CEO Regis Schultz interviewing On chief commercial officer Britt Olsen.
She was talking about sustainability, growth and why wholesale partners like JD remain important, despite On's big push to open its own stores.
'We never wanted to sway just one way,' she explained, referring to the retail vs wholesale debate and perhaps even underlining why Nike went wrong in recent years as it minimised wholesale. 'As a young, growing brand we would not be where we are today without [other retailers]. Wholesale partners are incredible and they continue to authenticate us and connect us with consumers we cannot reach'.
That was something a relaxed and cheerful Schultz wholeheartedly agreed with!
Olsen stressed that On's undeniable success was due to a mix of factors. 'Seeing a brand grow that was dominated by big players in the market is never down to just one thing,' she explained. 'Coming into an industry of giants, it was an advantage being the underdog. Our success is also down to naivety and blind optimism. Culturally we have a strong focus on innovation too.'
But as it celebrates 15 years in existence, its success (underlined by Olsen/On being given WRC's 'Faster. Bolder. Smarter' award at the event) does have its downsides.
'Now we're in an era where our mistakes are not behind closed doors! As we celebrate our 15th birthday as a company, I joke we're just like a 15-year-old human too. Like a teenager, we love all the evolving tech around AI but it's a question of what to chase, and what not to chase,' she said.
And she added that while Switzerland isn't exactly a giant player in the running shoe space dominated by big American or German names, its nationality does have some advantages.
For a start, she said the Swiss flag on the company's products was important to its US audience and marked a 'premiumness'' associated with Switzerland and tennis superstar Roger Federer, who was an early investor in the company.
'Our Swiss flag is symbolic of the principles we have as an organisation. Design, impact and sustainability are key for us,' she said.
And it means sustainability is baked into everything it does. As an American she was at first quite surprised about her Swiss colleagues' automatic assumption that a sustainable approach was normal and non-negotiable.
'We want to be sustainable because it's a key value,' she said. 'We care and we make sure we invest in sustainability – which is very Swiss. How we talk about sustainability is a constant point of discussion for us however'.
And being Swiss also means it has to be outward-looking: 'We are disruptors too. We have to be. Being a Swiss brand, you have to leave Switzerland". That's because the country has a population of less than 10 million people. "We had to plan to grow globally. If I think of Asia, we are very much disrupting the space and, in the US, we are seeing hyper growth. If you think of us as a 15-year-old teen, this is super exciting!'

Kupcho ends LPGA title drought with Shoprite Classic crown
"It feels amazing," said Kupcho, a stellar amateur whose three LPGA titles in 2022 included a major at the Chevron Championship. But the 36-year-old South Korean, whose career has been derailed by a debilitating shoulder injury, rebounded with three straight birdies at the ninth, 10th and 11th. She was right back in the mix with a birdie at 14, but back-to-back birdies at 17 and 18 weren't quite enough as her three-under 68 left her on 199. "I had a couple of bad bounces on the first hole and third hole," Lee said. "I was just thinking, it's just golf. I was just trying the same things, same chipping, same putts ... trying to move my lower body a little bit because I was kind of a little bit shaky because I think it was first time for me to start as a leader, so I was kind of nervous. "I got through (that) pretty quick and I finished great," Lee added. South Korean Kim Sei-young carded a six-under 65 that included a hole-in-one eagle at the 17th and a birdie at 18 and gave her sole possession of third place on 12-under 201. Kim teed off well before the leaders on a rainy, blustery day and had just two pars on a back nine that featured three straight birdies at 11, 12 and 13 before a double bogey at 14 and a bogey at 15. "It was like a rollercoaster, up and down, up and down," said Kim, adding that after her three birdies in a row she thought she was in striking distance of a victory. "That thinking made me a little bit nervous," she said, "that's why my tee shot at hole 14 goes way right." Nevertheless with the tee moved up at 17 she knew she had a chance to make something happen and her wedge shot from off the tee found the cup for her third ace as a pro -- two on the LPGA tour and one on the Korean LPGA.

The 100 ways Elon Musk allegedly benefited from Trump's White House
A new report published by a prominent American senator's office this week sheds light on how the first 130 days of US President Donald Trump's second term may have benefited Elon Musk, the world's richest man. Democratic senator Elizabeth Warren's office compiled a 14-page document using a combination of media reports, White House statements, and think tank research to identify over 100 occasions where Musk's companies and his own personal wealth benefited during his time with the unofficial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). A statement on Warren's website describes the report as a list of actions where Musk or White House officials "broke ethics norms and precedent or may have violated laws regarding federal employees' participation in matters in which they have a financial interest," while benefiting Musk's business concerns. The report alleges that these actions have increased Musk's personal wealth by "at least" $100 billion (€85.4 billion) and wiped out a potential additional $2.37 billion (€2.07 billion) in business liabilities from Musk's record. Warren's report comes in the wake of a very public fallout this week between Trump and Musk, who left his role at DOGE earlier this month. Warren's report claims that Musk had conflicts with "at least 70 per cent" of the government departments that his new role came after. The report claims that President Trump fired the USAID Inspector General, who was set to inspect Musk's satellite company Starlink for its role in providing services to Russia in its ongoing war against Ukraine. In one of the most controversial moves of his early presidency, the report claims that Trump then tried to shut down USAID in light of this pending investigation. Trump then announced a pause of US foreign development assistance programmes through USAID, creating a $60 billion (€55.3 billion) funding gap. Among the USAID cancellation repercussions is some non-profit funding to Ukraine that the EU told Euronews in February that it will not be able to meet the gap. Warren's report also claims that Starlink either struck deals or is negotiating deals with at least a dozen countries, largely in Asia and Africa, 'amid threats of tariffs'. Regulators "have taken no public action on their investigations" in more than 40 federal agency matters regarding Musk's companies "for several months or more," the report continued. Many of the stalled investigations highlighted in the report were focused on Tesla, Musk's electric vehicle company. Citing NPR reports, Warren said that Trump fired the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) in the first round of DOGE cuts after it received over 300 consumer complaints about Tesla. Pending investigations and audits from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Labor Department's Office of Federal Contract Compliance into Tesla were shut down by the Trump administration, the report continued. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), in charge of investigating market manipulation, limited staff authority to launch investigations as the body was investigating Tesla's potentially false claims about self-driving vehicles. In a similar vein, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) laid off workers in DOGE cuts while it investigated Tesla crashes caused by the car's 'full self-driving' and remote control features. Trump's administration also administered cuts and slowed down the work of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) and Fish and Wildlife Services (FWS) after these agencies launched investigations into SpaceX, Tesla and xAI Musk's artificial intelligence (AI) company behind chatbot Grok, for environmental violations. During his time at DOGE, Musk was able to put in motion or sign several government contracts worth billions of dollars for SpaceX, his space technology company based in Texas. Trump's announcement of the Golden Dome project to guarantee security for the US, along with an initial $25 billion (€22 billion) investment, had already pegged SpaceX as a frontrunner for the project. The White House is now also reportedly calling for 13 per cent more spending for the Department of Defense, with SpaceX "considered likely to be the top recipient" of this funding, while the report alleges the company has already made over $7 billion (€6.15 billion) in contracts. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is expected to subsidise SpaceX's broadband services in a reversal of a previous decision to give the company $900 million (€790 million). Musk also helped handpick many of the administration's key personnel, including the initial selection of SpaceX investor Jared Isaacman as NASA's top administrator and putting Michael Guetlein, a former SpaceX fellow, at the head of the Golden Dome missile program. These picks also influenced a potential contract with the Pentagon where SpaceX would be paid to "transport military cargo around the globe". The report also alleges that DOGE infiltrated the Treasury Department's Federal Payment System, which could give Musk the financial information of competitor companies that have been awarded contracts.

But the 53-year-old has now set his sights on a more modest connection with a team he has long admired. Snoop Dogg, who has published a recipe book called 'From Crook to Cook', once described Celtic supporters as "special" and said he identified with the club's mascot Hoopy the Hound. He told the Sunday Mail that Celtic fans would flock to the burger van and that it would become a foodie "Paradise", the nickname give to the club's Parkhead stadium. "I would love to bring a pop-up burger van to a sports stadium to show fans that food at stadiums can be good," he said. "It's got to be Celtic Park, man. The secret to a good burger is the love in the preparation. The ground beef has got to be mixed with some secret spices, then add a good quality cheese and some maple-cured bacon. "The Celtic fans are gonna love it, and to make sure they are just right, Snoop is going to be serving them himself." Snoop Dogg worked as a correspondent for NBC at the Paris Olympics last year, has launched two youth football leagues, and has been a vocal advocate for pay equality for female athletes. He claimed he would not be taking his culinary ventures to Celtic's arch rivals Rangers. "Am I going to bring my burgers to Rangers as well? Nah, I think we will give that a miss," he said.
