Meninga set to be named Perth Bears first NRL coach
Mal Meninga is set to be named the Perth Bears' foundation coach by Friday, a move that will see him resign as Kangaroos coach.
The ARL Commission is preparing to announce the Bears' historic first coach after an extensive search that saw Brad Arthur and Sam Burgess eliminated from contention. This clears the way for Meninga, who will lead the NRL's 18th team as they enter the competition in 2027, according to The Daily Telegraph.
The NRL, which owns the Perth licence, has finalised financial terms with Meninga, and his representatives have discussed relocation clauses, strong signs that the NRL Immortal is on the verge of taking the job.
ARL Commission boss Peter V'landys is expected to confirm the appointment within 24 hours. If confirmed, the decision will require a new Test coach for Australia's Ashes campaign, as the ARLC will not allow Meninga to hold both roles.
Meninga, who signed a new deal last year to stay with the Kangaroos through the 2026 World Cup, will step away after a nine-year reign to take on the Perth challenge. He could initially remain in Canberra to oversee player recruitment before the Bears are allowed to sign players from November 1.
'I am certainly interested in helping out in any way I can,' Meninga told The Daily Telegraph last week. 'It would be great to be part of an expansion team, whether that's Perth or PNG, as both regions have great potential if we get the pathways right.'
NRL figures have praised the move, with North Sydney legend Billy Moore saying, 'I think Mal could be very important… Having Mal as your figurehead coach is a great thing because he is your brand. You know him. He has credibility. And he is also a good coach because of what he has done for Queensland and Australia.'
Wayne Bennett added, 'Mal would be great for Perth. Mal is a legend of our game, he's an Immortal. He would be great from a promotional point of view, too, giving the game some profile over there.'
The ARLC is now expected to move quickly to appoint a new Kangaroos coach ahead of this year's Ashes series.
More to come.

North Melbourne youngster Riley Hardeman excited for first AFL game in home state in Bunbury
North Melbourne youngster Riley Hardeman says he can't wait to run out onto the ground in Bunbury on Sunday for his first AFL game in his home state. The Kangaroos selected Hardeman with pick 23 during the 2023 national draft and, despite having reached double digits in games, has yet to pull on the blue and white in Western Australia. But the Swan Districts product gets his first opportunity this week with North Melbourne in town for a home game against the Eagles in the South West. 'I'm feeling really excited,' Hardeman said. 'We came down here for the pre-season against West Coast. I got down but didn't play any minutes, so it's exciting to be playing my first AFL minutes in Western Australia. 'I'll have a few family members down, so it will be good to get around them and the West Australian fans.' The game comes as part of a doubleheader that includes a clash against Fremantle at Optus Stadium next week, the Kangaroos having sold a home game to the WA clubs to address travel imbalances as well as assist the club's coffers. Hardeman revealed the playing group had embraced the home-away-from-home clash in Bunbury, saying they were eager to put on a show for their WA fans. 'From a club point of view, it's really exciting to get over to WA, sell a home game and appeal to our fans over here,' he said. 'The condition of the ground is in good nick and the stands they are putting around and the atmosphere they are creating, I'm really looking forward to playing there.' A capacity crowd of nearly 15,000 is expected to fill Bunbury's upgraded Hands Oval. A good number of those may also just be there to see Hardeman, the 20-year-old stating his inbox had been blowing up with family and friends wanting tickets. 'I've got a few ticket requests already, but I think there is a bit of a waitlist for family and friends,' he said. 'But I'll have plenty of support over here, which is exciting.'

Braith Anasta calls for Bulldogs to make tough Connor Tracey call after Lachlan Galvin coup
Braith Anasta has warned that the Lachlan Galvin signing could disrupt the Bulldogs' momentum and will likely result in a major backline reshuffle. The 19-year-old's contract saga has dominated the rugby league news cycle for several weeks before it finally came to a head last week when he signed with the Bulldogs on around $750,000 a season. Many expected Galvin to make his debut in the Easter Monday clash against the Eels, but the teen phenom has instead been named outside the 17. Although a late change could be on the cards. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. His arrival at Belmore had many speculating he would take the spot of No. 7 Toby Sexton, who has been a revelation in 2025 and is a large reason why the Dogs sit pretty at the top of the NRL ladder. But Anasta told that he believes Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo has other ideas and instead representative centre and current Dogs five-eighth Matt Burton will shift to fullback, with Galvin handed the No. 6 jersey and fullback Connor Tracey playing off the bench or dropped to reserve grade. 'I think Galvin is a 5/8 not a halfback,' Anasta told 'I know many are saying he will play seven but the Galvin signing isn't a short-term play. Where he fits their system right now is tricky. 'I'm sure the Dogs would have spoken to him openly about where he could potentially play but there isn't an obvious spot for him to come into. I would think they will most likely give Sexton the next few weeks to see if he continues to knock it out of the park. 'If he does they have two options, play him (Galvin) off the bench for the year or if not I don't mind the idea of playing Burton at fullback. 'It doesn't mess up the team chemistry, Burton's kicking game isn't taken away by being at fullback, and of course that is tough for Tracey, but Burton fits the mould of the modern fullback arguably better. 'Fullbacks these days are runners, who are real ball players and it (playing fullback) would allow him to inject himself into the game as he likes. If it was up to me I'd be doing that before anything else so as to not interrupt the team as much. 'I could see them really having success with Burton at fullback along with Sexton and Galvin in that spine but again a lot of it really rides on Sexton.' If Galvin is to be a late inclusion, he will likely be met with a mixed reception from fans, coming up against the team he turned down, the Eels. While Tigers fans also feel aggrieved by his decision to exit the club and his return to the joint venture will almost certainly result in him being booed and jeered every time he touches the ball. That reaction is nothing new to Anasta, who in his playing career had a mixed reaction after he joined the Roosters, due to the fact he was a Rabbitohs junior. So ahead of Galvin's possible debut, the player-turned-Fox League pundit passed on some words of wisdom to the teenager. 'My words of wisdom with anything like this is you've made your decision now and have to just back yourself,' Anasta told 'He (Galvin) sounds like a really switched-on kid with a high footy IQ. All I'd say is block out the noise as it's really irrelevant. 'What people think, feel all their opinions about you are irrelevant unless they're the ones closest to you like your family, friends your boss and your coach. 'Because everyone's always going have an opinion and not everyone's always going to agree with the decisions that you're making in life but it doesn't matter. It really doesn't matter as long as you know you're confident in your own ability, confident in the decision you make and you work hard. 'For Galvin, the sky is the limit, the decision to leave has been made, he can put all that behind him and look forward to playing footy.'
