Ahmad Ibrahim: Time for a world-class race track in Sarawak
Ahmad delivering his speech during the event.
MIRI (June 14): Senator Dato Ahmad Ibrahim has called for the construction of a proper and permanent race track in Sarawak to cater to the growing number of motorsports enthusiasts within the state and increasing interest from abroad.
'I want to see a permanent Sarawak International Race Circuit built—not only for drift, but also for drag, circuit racing, gymkhana, autocross, karting, and grassroots motorsports,' said Ahmad when officiating the opening of the Borneo Star Drift Series (BSDS) 2025 Round 1 and Round 2 at the Permyjaya Racetrack here last night.
He highlighted that such an event has significant potential to generate employment across a wide range of sectors.
'Events like this have great potential in generating numerous jobs involving motorsports engineering, racing crews, event logistics, media production, tyre and lubricant businesses, tuning garages, and even e-motorsport,' said Ahmad, who is also president of the Sarawak Motorsports Association.
Commending the young organisers behind the event, he praised the KDC Motorsport Club for their dedication despite limited funding.
'They do not speak much, but walk the talk and work hard. Funds may be limited, but their fighting spirit in making it happen was relentless. Keep going. You have my full backing at the national level. We will continue to push for more support and more funds – not only from the government but also the corporate sector and investors.'
Describing the event as extraordinary, Ahmad said it was time to celebrate the rise of Malaysia's and Borneo's drift scene.

'This is not just a race. This is a movement. BSDS2025 is not just a contest of who is the fastest or who produces the most smoke.
'This event is for Malaysians, particularly Sarawakians, to display their talents—in driving, tuning, technical setups, crew work, and most of all, passion.
'Drifting is not just about turning the steering wheel. It's an art, it's adrenaline, it's community.'
He noted that the presence of international racers such as Toni Arakaki, Davide Dorigo, and Mervyn Nakamura underscored Sarawak's growing reputation in the global motorsports arena.
'When drifters and racers come to Miri from Japan, Thailand, and the Philippines—that's not just tourism. That is international recognition,' he said.
'That says something about our motorsport potential. And yes, with live streaming and digital coverage, we're not just hosting a local event—we're on the global motorsport map.'
He also said that choosing Miri as a host city for the event was both timely and appropriate, given its status as one of Malaysia's top tourist destinations.
Earlier in the day, drifters competed in a qualifying session followed by several sub-events including the Top 16 Battle, Top 24 Battle, Top 16 Parade, and Top 16 Tandem.
The event continues today with final practice sessions for all drifters, another round of qualifiers, battles, parades, tandems, and the Top 4 Drift Cars Show. Spectators will also have the chance to take photos with the cars.
Tomorrow's programme includes final practice, a qualifying session, more battles, the Top 16 Parade, and an autograph session. The event will wrap up with a prize-giving and photography session.
Also present at the opening were event organisers Andy Chong and Fish Lee of KDC Motorsport Club, as well as representatives from Sarawak Sports Corporation, Motorsports Association Malaysia, Sarawak Motorsports Association, and Miri City Council. Local fishermen should benefit from BDIFIP project
BAGAN DATUK: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called for deep-sea resource harvesting licences under the Bagan Datuk International Fishery Industrial Park (BDIFIP) to be awarded to local communities, especially those from Perak. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the Fisheries Department could work with Menteri Besar Incorporated (MB Inc) to identify potential local operators who could be granted licences under the RM2 billion project. The Bagan Datuk MP added that he would work with financial institutions to ensure eligible fishermen receive assistance or loans, thereby ensuring that the benefits of the project are shared fairly between foreign investors and the local community. 'This is how we create balance, so that Malaysians, especially those in Perak, are not left with just low-paying jobs of RM1,700, watching others benefit from the project,' he said at the BDIFIP pre-launch ceremony here today. He also expressed hope that local workers at BDIFIP would not be paid minimum wages while foreign investors offer significantly higher salaries for similar roles in their home countries. 'Do not exploit the hard work of our local youth. Fair wages must be ensured, especially for those with skills and the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM). 'I will personally monitor the progress of this industrial zone and ensure all timelines are fully met,' he said. At the event, Ahmad Zahid also witnessed the exchange of an agreement between MB Inc. Perak and Younchang Engineering & Construction (M) Sdn Bhd, as well as the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between Younchang Engineering and MingCheng Group Co Ltd, paving the way for broader international collaboration in the project's investment ecosystem. Earlier, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the BDIFIP project, involving investments of more than RM2 billion, will be developed in phases starting in 2027 across a 126.4-hectare site. The project is expected to elevate Bagan Datuk into an international seafood trading hub.

RM90 mln MARA college project in Kapit begins after long wait
Nanta (fifth left) witnesses the handover of award letter between Roslan (fourth left) and Hajini. KAPIT (June 14): A long-awaited higher education project in Kapit is finally underway as the government recently handed over the letter of award for the Kolej Profesional MARA (KPM) to its appointed contractor, in the presence of Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi. The Kapit MP was joined by Public Works Malaysia (PWD) Director-General Datuk Wira Ir Roslan Ismail, where the latter presented the award letter to Wangi Marine Services Sdn Bhd director Hajini Pon. 'We have waited a long time for this. This is what we truly needed – a high-impact project to benefit students from rural areas,' Nanta told a press conference today. The KPM Kapit facility, approved in 2019, will offer diploma-level education with courses such as business studies, e-commerce, plantation management, information technology, and other soft-skill disciplines, he said. The college is expected to accommodate up to 300 students per intake. While a minimum fee is required for first-time enrollees, he said tuition will be free and each student will receive a monthly allowance of RM300. 'Parents need not apply for education loans – all costs will be fully borne by the government,' he assured. Elaborating further, the minister said the project is estimated to cost approximately RM90 million, with the contractor securing the open tender for RM79.7 million. The remaining allocation will be used for additional infrastructure and related purposes. The scope of works includes earthworks, construction of 19 administrative and academic blocks, a cafeteria, student hostels, and a football field. Nanta expressed his gratitude to Deputy Prime Minister Dato Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) for their roles in ensuring the project's implementation in Kapit. 'KPM will not only serve the people of Kapit but will be open to all Sarawakians,' he said. Nanta also urged the contractor to carry out the project with strict adherence to quality standards and a commitment to timely completion, despite the area's challenging terrain, particularly near Jalan Kapit–Song. Also present were MARA deputy director-general Rohayah Mohd Zain; PWD Malaysia deputy director-general Siti Baizura Mohd Nora; deputy minister in the Premier's Department (Native Customs and Laws) Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat; Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan, and Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang. alexander nanta linggi Kapit Kolej Profesional MARA
