Generator keeping kauhale running leaves seniors exhausted and sick
IWILEI, Hawaii (KHON2) — It's a dilemma pitting much-needed housing for the homeless against the quality of life for senior residents.A generator powering a new kauhale – a tiny home village meant to provide shelter and stability – has become an unbearable nuisance for the seniors living next door. They reached out to KHON2 for help, and we got answers.

The kauhale is supposed to be a beacon of hope for some of the state's most vulnerable, but for the seniors living right next door, it's turned into a nightmare.
'It's not too bad today, it's not on,' said Kelly Plemons, a resident of Senior Residences at Iwilei. 'At night when it kicks on, it's loud. I can hear it on the other side of the building.'
Alana Ola Pono in Iwilei opened in December of last year. The $6 million project is the state's 17th kauhale. The massive generator, installed to power the 43 units, is supposed to be temporary. But for the elderly residents at the Senior Residences at Iwilei, it's an unwelcome neighbor.
'This is senior living. Not a bunch of young people over here. We're older, so fumes bother us a lot and then the noise effects their sleep,' Plemons said.
'I close the window 'cause I don't want to hear it. The constant [noise],' said Mollie Robinson-Miodovski, who lives on the third floor of the Senior Residences at Iwilei.
The state, aware of the issue, has taken steps to address it. Kimo Carvalho, HomeAid Hawaii Executive Director which is the contractor for the kauhale, said in a statement 'HomeAid built a wooden structure to cover and muffle the generator and also designed the structure's roof angles to direct any noise toward King Street, thereby further quieting the noise level.'
As for the fumes, they said the generator is not diesel.
The state's representative for the Governor's Homelessness team, Jun Yang, told KHON2 they are working with HECO on plans to connect the kauhale to the electrical grid. But the plans have taken longer than expected and there's no timeline on when the work will get done.
The area councilmember is calling for patience.
'I know that the Governor and his team care passionately about the homeless and dealing with it. And so, you know, I think this is one of those things where we're just going to have to get everybody to work together, and the sooner, the better,' said Tyler Dos Santos-Tam, Honolulu Councilmember for the Iwilei district.
For residents suffering now, sooner feels like an eternity.
'Move it,' Plemons said.

Kauaʻi to survey community for emergency preparedness
LIHUE, Hawaii (KHON2) — The Hawaiʻi Department of Health's Kauaʻi District Health Office will be conducting a Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response, also known as a CASPER survey, this month to assess the preparedness of the island's community. From June 23 to June 27, survey teams will canvas 30 randomly selected blocks in the island, with seven houses from each block will also be systematically selected and surveyed. 'By asking households about their emergency supplies and evacuation plans, CASPER surveys enable the Kauaʻi District Health Office and the county to better meet our community's needs before, during and after a disaster,' said Lauren Guest, a deputy district health officer from the Kauaʻi Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity also added that the surveys help emergency response staff train in the field prior to a local disaster. Survey teams will be made up of DOH staff, Kauaʻi Medical Reserve Corps and the Kauaʻi Emergency Management Agency. The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete, and participation is voluntary. Responses are completely confidential. This will mark the eighth CASPER survey on the island. HONOLULU (KHON2) – In the ahupuaʻa of Honolulu, which lies in the moku of Kona here on Oʻahu, stands a symbol of Hawaiian pride. We are speaking of King Kamehameha I Statue. Kaʻahumanu St, from Downtown Honolulu to Pearl City What was originally proposed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Captain Cook's arrival to Hawaiʻi, an image of a 45-year-old King Kamehameha I was chosen as a monument promoting Hawaiian national pride. At a cost of $10,000, it was politician Walter Gibson representing Lāhainā who had proposed the idea. Having been started in Boston and completed in Paris, the 7-foot-tall statue left Germany on a ship in August of months later, word reached Hawaiʻi that the ship went down off the coast of Falkland Islands, losing all of its cargo. Following the loss of the original statue, a second statue of King Kamehameha I was commissioned. But to the government's surprise, the original was recovered and arrived in Honolulu a couple months prior to its replacement. Today, there are four. The 25-pound, year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix was rescued by a community member and turned over to the Hawaiian Human Society after he was found wandering around an ʻEwa Beach neighborhood. 4-year-old Ralphie looks for fur-ever ʻohana Liko is an active and adventurous pup who can't wait to find the perfect ʻohana to explore the world with him. He enjoys hiking on mountain trails and long walks along the beach, delighting in the symphony of sights and scents the island has to offer. The Humane Society describes Liko's grin as an 'irresistibly goofy smile that will melt yours in return.' The pup is a recipient of the Reid Krucky Memorial Fund, meaning his adoption fee is completely waived and he will come with a bundle of supplies to help him settle into his new hale.
