As Doc Edge celebrates its 20th year, these leadership changes mark an exciting new chapter, with the Doc Edge Festival 2025 programme launching on 9 May, featuring 90 films and immersive projects.
Doc Edge is delighted to announce the appointment of Matthew Metcalfe ONZM as the new Chair of the Doc Edge Board. Matthew joined the board in August 2024, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a deep passion for documentary and the screen industry.
One of New Zealand's leading screen producers, Matthew has a distinguished career supporting powerful, globally resonant storytelling. His portfolio spans both documentary and drama, and he has long been a champion of factual storytelling's role in shaping culture and sparking dialogue.
'I am deeply honoured to take on the role of Chair' says Matthew. 'Doc Edge is an essential platform for bold, authentic voices from New Zealand and beyond. As the organisation celebrates its 20th anniversary, I look forward to helping shape its future and supporting its growth as the Asia Pacific centre for documentary.'
Matthew steps into the role following the departure of Glenn Johnstone, who has served as Chair over the past several years.
'It has been a privilege to serve on the board and contribute to the important work of Doc Edge,' says Glenn.
Doc Edge Co-Directors Dan Shanan and Alex Lee say: 'It has been a privilege to work alongside Glenn, and we are incredibly proud of what we have achieved together, especially during the past few challenging years. Glenn's dedication to Doc Edge has been invaluable, and we are deeply grateful for his leadership and commitment.'
Doc Edge is also pleased to welcome Sarah Stuart to the board. Sarah is a strategic communications expert, and former editorial leader with senior experience across media, politics, and corporate leadership. Her past roles include leading communications at KiwiRail and Fletcher Construction, as well as Director of Communications for the Opposition Leader. She recently established a new commercial integration unit at Stuff Group.
Storytelling has been at the centre of Sarah's career for decades and she says joining Doc Edge at a time of major growth and opportunity is a privilege.
'In our chaotic world, documentary storytelling brings connection, emotional resonance and insights that enlighten and uplift us,' she says. 'Doc Edge is a world class festival that every Kiwi should have the opportunity to experience. I am so excited to help it on its next stage of growth.'

PHOTO: SUPPLIED Auditions for Queenstown's Remarkable Theatre's 2025 play, set in the unpredictable world of dating, are on this weekend. Described as "a laugh-out-loud comedy", Take a Chance on Me, by noted veteran Kiwi playwright Roger Hall, will run over eight performances during September at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall. It follows six hopeful singles navigating the highs and lows of modern romance — primary school teacher Fleur, homemaker Lorraine, lawyer Eleanor, plumber Brian, pharmacist Tim and banker Dan who's just been made redundant. Also being cast are two main ensemble roles, male and female, who each play over a dozen characters. According to the audition pack most characters will be involved in scenes with elements of intimacy, but not nudity. This year's director's Ryan Brennan, who's had over a decade's experience in Hollywood as an assistant director for multi-camera sitcoms — he was in the adult ensemble of Showbiz Queenstown's musical School of Rock in 2022. Ooooh this is a tough one. Let's just say actively dating and sexually fulfilled. What do you enjoy about being single? Being footloose and fancy-free. Not having to consider anyone else in my spontaneous and rogue decision-making. Orienting my life around pleasure, whether that's spending all day with my darling girlfriends, eating crackers and cheese for dinner or having a drawer full of sex toys. Sexologist Morgan Penn. What do you dislike about being single? Not having forehead strokes at the end of the night. The loneliness that seeps in when you just want to be held and share the thoughts that are all-consuming. How do you approach dating? I just live my life, say yes to every invite so I'm out in the world and rely on my friends to set me up with people they vouch for. I treat it as a fun time and a chance to meet lovely new humans. Do you use apps? If so, which ones and why do you like them? Not currently. I've tried all of them over the years, not always for myself, but so I can recommend ones to my clients. It really depends on what you are looking for. How does it feel to be sharing your personal stories with listeners? It's always a bit tender, and I usually get a vulnerability hangover after every episode drops, but I always get the most beautiful responses from listeners and a lot of 'me too' stories, which makes it all worthwhile. What do you hope listeners will learn from your stories? I want people to feel less alone in their journeys, whether that's with their bodies, relationships, sex lives or self-worth.
