Arne Slot thanks ref Michael Oliver for his role in Liverpool title celebrations
Arne Slot was left fuming with Michael Oliver after Liverpool drew in the Merseyside derby but has now thanked the referee after the Reds were able to celebrate the Premier League title with their own fans
Arne Slot has joked that he should thank Michael Oliver for allowing Liverpool to celebrate at Anfield with their own fans - which came about after they dropped two points late on at Everton.
In the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, the Toffees equalised in the eighth minute of stoppage time before carnage began at full-time. It resulted in Oliver sending off Curtis Jones and Slot after the Dutchman had gone to air his anger over some of the referee's decisions.
While frustrating at the time, the point, rather than three, ultimately meant that the Reds were able to win the title on their own terms at Anfield. Had they won then they may have been crowned champions without playing or potentially on the road.
Slot was seething in the immediate aftermath of the Merseyside derby. It was alleged he said "I'll f***ing blame you" if the Reds missed out on the title and he was subsequently handed a touchline ban, but the Dutchman has now seen the lighter side after becoming a champion in his debut season.
He told the Athletic: "There were a lot of things that were hard to take in that extra time. I am usually quite calm. But the whole situation meant it was not a place to be calm in. Their fans were very loud with it being the last derby at their stadium. In extra time, too, many things happened that were not OK. But we're all human beings, we all make mistakes.
"We're talking about the foul on Mo, we're talking about the foul on Ibou (Konate), we're talking about the fourth official who tells me there are only 60 seconds to play after there was an injury for them where he then gave the ball to them when we had the ball. That meant they could put another long ball in. They scored after 80 seconds. I could feel that the referee was waiting for the moment when we would kick the ball away.
"But after 60 seconds he should have blown the whistle. That was a bit too much, even for me! It felt at that moment in time like we had dropped two very important points. Looking back at it now, we have to thank Michael Oliver because that late goal meant we could win the title in our stadium."
When Liverpool were held by Everton, it saw the gap at the top reduced to seven points with Arsenal still harbouring hopes of chasing down the Reds. That never materialised with Slot's side able to increase their lead as the Gunners continued to drop points.
Liverpool made light work of Tottenham last month before iconic scenes began at Anfield. The Reds were unable to properly celebrate their Premier League triumph in 2020 due to the Covid lockdown but jubilant scenes went on after they were crowned champions this term.

The World Cup icon was heavily linked with a move to Man Utd before, during and after Erik ten Hag's rollercoaster two years. One of the reasons he supposedly turned Old Trafford chiefs down was becasue he didn't feel confident speaking English. A few years on and ahead of the upcoming 32-team Club World Cup, Zizou was offered an eye-watering £84million to commit to a one-year contract at Saudi Pro League runners-up Al-Hilal. Desailly said: "Will Zinedine Zidane be tempted by Saudi Arabia? "Well he had a blank cheque on the table from Chelsea and a blank cheque from Manchester United and turned them down. Kylian Mbappe snubs Mo Salah as he announces his vote in this year's Ballon d'Or
Ousmane Dembele and Lamine Yamal are both in the running for the Ballon d'Or and Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe has now revealed who his vote is going to go later this year Kylian Mbappe believes Mohamed Salah is NOT in the running for this year's Ballon d'Or after confirming his pick for this year's top prize. The 2025 award already has a number of front-runners following a host of stunning campaigns. Ousmane Dembele is among the favourites after a season in which he scored 33 goals as Paris Saint-Germain won the Champions League for the first time. Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal is also among the contenders after a brilliant season for the Spanish giants. Liverpool star Salah is also in the conversation after a standout personal campaign as the Reds lifted the Premier League title. But Mbappe neglected to mention the Egyptian as he revealed who his vote would go to right now - albeit he has warned that he could still change his mind. As quoted by RMC Sport, he said: "Would I vote for Dembélé? Yes. Is there really any need to explain? We're talking about Yamal and Dembélé, I'm going for Dembélé. It's very clear! "Things are evolving very quickly, as the last few winners have shown. We weren't talking about certain players who ultimately won. Is it September? A lot will happen between now and then, but today we're talking about Ousmane and Lamine. That's why I responded." Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo has also recently given his verdict on the Ballon d'Or and specifically Yamal. He believes that it is slightly too early to put that kind of pressure on him but thinks the Barcelona man is firmly in the running. Speaking at a Portugal press conference, Ronaldo said: "Lamine Yamal is doing very well, he is taking full advantage of his talent. Now let the kid grow and don't put too much pressure on him. Let him be and let him grow well, take the pressure off him. He has no shortage of talent." He added: "The individual awards have lost some consensus; I can't say anything about who should win. In my opinion, those who stand out and win the Champions League should win. But there is no consensus. 'I don't believe much in individual awards because I know what goes on behind the scenes. Lamine could win, like Dembele or Vitinha, other emerging players… But individual awards are irrelevant." The Ballon d'Or 2025 will be handed out in September in a glitzy ceremony in Paris, with the nominees set to be confirmed a month before. Manchester City midfielder Rodri is currently the holder having claimed last year's award. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
