
Time for more home grown tea cultivation?
ROWS of tea plants could become a more familiar sight on the hills of Wales and other parts of the UK in the future.
Scientists at Aberystwyth University have been using machine-learning to analyse the chemical make-up of tea grown in non-traditional areas, including Powys in mid Wales and Dartmoor in south west England.
They hope their findings will help emerging tea growers in the UK to develop breeding strategies, cultivation practices and processing methods which suit climate conditions in this part of the world.
The research team are currently working with Dartmoor Estate Tea in Devon which is known for its unique microclimate and soil diversity.
The study is focusing on six varieties of tea which have been selected by the estate for their adaptability to diverse environmental conditions and their potential for chemical diversity.
Speaking on International Tea Day 2025, Dr Amanda J Lloyd, a senior researcher in food, diet and health at Aberystwyth University's Department of Life Sciences, said:
'This study is contributing to the growing field of metabolomics by providing a comprehensive chemical profile of tea grown in a non-traditional region. Our findings offer new insights into the adaptability of tea plants and their potential for cultivation in emerging regions, contributing to global food security and agricultural diversification. Further research will now need to be carried out and should include multi-seasonal sampling, comparisons with traditional tea-growing regions, and analysis of processed tea to provide a more comprehensive understanding of tea chemistry.'
The study's findings have been shared in an academic paper published in Metabolites, an international, peer-reviewed open access journal.
Dr Lloyd and her team have also been working with Buckhall Farm near Knighton in Powys which is pioneering tea cultivation in high-altitude Welsh conditions. The project was part of the first phase of the SBRI Agri-Food Technology Challenge, funded by the Welsh Government.
The work builds on an innovative portfolio of research at Aberystwyth University focused on tea's health benefits, sustainable cultivation and consumer behaviour.
Among other ongoing studies is the Better Brain project, which is funded by Innovate UK and which is currently recruiting for a trial investigating the effects of a supplement containing green tea extract, ginseng and omega-3s on cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults.
The study is led by the Well-being and Health Assessment Research Unit (WARU) at the University, working with colleagues from the Department of Psychology and using advanced electroencephalogram (EEG) technology to assess cognition and wellbeing.
Professor Nigel Holt from the Department of Psychology and the University's Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor, International, said:
'Tea is not only comforting but increasingly reveals itself to be a cognitive ally. Our research is helping us understand the deep biochemical relationships between tea's compounds and mental function. Better Brain is particularly exciting because it bridges nutrition, psychology and neurophysiology.'

Project to create tidal stream turbine blades in Wales
The Welsh Government has backed the project in a bid to revolutionise the tidal energy industry. The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) Cymru, based in Broughton, has teamed up with Menter Mon and the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult's Welsh team for this initiative. Their goal is to improve the efficiency and durability of tidal energy blades. This project is one of five in Wales which received a share of £1 million from the Welsh Government's VInnovate programme, intended to encourage innovative collaborations across industrial regions in Europe. The project also has the involvement of two Galician firms—marine renewable energy infrastructure manufacturer Magallanes Renovables and research organisation D3 Applied Technologies. Andy Silcox, interim chief technology officer at the AMRC, said: "Wales is already recognised as a trailblazer in the establishment of tidal energy sites, and a hub for cutting-edge marine energy research, contributing its extensive knowledge and experience. "This collaboration between AMRC Cymru, the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult and Menter Mon will create a strategic partnership among the regions of Wales and Galicia, bringing together a unique blend of expertise and innovation in the field of renewable energy. "Supporting the design and development of the newest tidal turbine blades, the project will lay the groundwork for a lasting collaboration, driving future innovations and projects in renewable energy to contribute to a more sustainable energy landscape." More projects from Wales received funding in the 2024 VInnovate funding tranche than any other region. Rebecca Evans, cabinet secretary for economy, energy and planning, said: "Wales' research and development sector is internationally renowned, with academia, industry and government working together to deliver big leaps in renewable energy innovation in particular. Hundreds of ordinary people sampled rivers in Wales and this is what they found
Rivers in southern Gwynedd are amongst the cleanest in the UK, a citizen science initiative has revealed. Elsewhere in Wales, water quality is poorer – but nowhere near as bad as in England. This year's Great UK WaterBlitz showed that 37% of water samples in Wales contained unacceptable levels of nutrient pollution, compared to 74% in England. No nutrient pollution – nitrates and phosphates – were found in any of Meirionydd's rivers. The Llŷn and Eryri river basin fared well too, with just 12% of sampling points showing significant levels of nutrient pollution. For the Tawe to Cadoxton catchments in southwest Wales, the figure was around 27%. However, water quality was poorer elsewhere. In the Dee catchment, nutrient pollution was measured at 40%, while on Anglesey 43% of the island's rivers were found to be degraded. A little better, but still failing, was the Teifi and North Ceredigion river basins (48%). Worst offender were the Cleddau and Pembrokeshire Coastal Rivers where nitrates and phosphates were found in almost seven in 10 waterways. Across the UK, the worst places for water quality were the Thames and Anglian river districts. Here, fewer than 14% of measurements showed clean water based on 1,335 samples. While Wales compared favourably with England, the country's 37% failure rate was worse than in Scotland and Northern Ireland (both 30%). Dr Sasha Woods, director of science and policy at Earthwatch Europe, said the UK-wide picture is one of rivers 'suffocating under relentless pollution - sewage, tyre particles, fertilisers'. She added: 'While the situation in Wales is better than in England, over half of the sites tested in Wales still show unacceptable levels of pollution. This demonstrates a clear need for action to address the issues impacting Welsh rivers and protect these vital resources.' Nitrates and phosphates occur naturally in the environment and are essential for plant growth. But high concentrations cause excessive growth which decreases oxygen concentrations, negatively impacting aquatic plants and animals. According to Environment Agency figures, farming accounts for 50-60% of nitrate pollution while sewage effluent contributes 73% of phosphates. The Great UK WaterBlitz, organised by Earthwatch Europe, saw 7,978 citizen scientists test 4,017 freshwater sites in the UK late April. For the study, E coli bacteria levels were also measured in 301 sites. Of these, 24% indicated the water was too poor to swim in. Earthwatch Europe found a link between E coli and phosphate (sewage) levels, but not between E coli and nitrate levels. Why are these scientists trying to collect dolphin poo?
When you think of dolphins frolicking in the sea, you may be picturing a warm, sunny, tropical island somewhere. But did you know there are around 200 bottlenose dolphins living in Cardigan Bay just off the coast of Wales? Well, scientists have been studying the pod of dolphins for years, but they have come up with a new way to learn more about them. By studying their poo. The team of conservationists funded by the Nature Networks Fund in collaboration with Aberystwyth University are trying to learn more about the dolphin's relationships and movement patterns. They are therefore attempting to collect poo samples from as many dolphins in Cardigan Bay as possible using nets after the marine creatures do their 'business'. They will then be able to send the poo to Aberystwyth University to be analysed to help understand what they have been feeding on and therefore, where they are getting their food from. With enough data (poo), they will also be able to build individual profiles for each dolphin and perhaps even find similarities between biological family members. But the poop isn't the only thing they will be looking closely at. They will also attempt to match the samples with photo identification records of the dolphins gathered on camera by members of the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales. Sarah Perry, the trust's marine conservation and research manager, said she hoped the study would "unravel the mysteries of bottlenose dolphin ecology in Cardigan Bay"."This project covers an area of research that we have aspired to embark on over the past decade or so, and we are excited that it has come to fruition at a time when it is even more important that we build on our knowledge of the species in the waters around us."
