Whanganui club rugby: Undefeated teams Ruapehu and Marist Knights face off at Rochfort Park
'There's a few young fellas from the college that have stepped up, and there's the odd guy that's come in from work.
'There was a good basis from last year anyway, which was good.'
Ruapehu College First XV won the Manawatū Premier 2 schoolboys competition last season, and out of that squad come Chrissy Winter, Jimmy Rowe and Hunter Cross, who played in the Whanganui Under-16s under Chris Winter, as well as Tahatika Te Riaki, who made the U18s.
Still with plenty of grunt in the engine room, the side retain Premier-experienced forwards like Mac-James Edmonds, Christian Hawira, Kevin McDonnell and Ben Waiwai, while Ezekiel Anderson is back home from a one-season stint with Tāmata Hauhā Rātana.
Also home from Byfords Readimix Taihape is current Steelform Whanganui representative Kahl Elers-Green, who captains the team from the midfield, while last year's talented young skipper Harry Rowe made his comeback from injury against Hunterville.
They will need to be on song to contain the rampant Knights.
Winter hopes to contain their speedy attackers and pull them into an honest country rugby game.
'We have to. If we let them run, we'll be no good.
'We've watched them; when we played Pirates, they were on before us, watched their skill level.
'They're a well-drilled team. We'll have to make a game plan this week and go give it our all.'
Draw
May 17, 1pm kickoffs unless noted (times subject to change):
Hunterville v Utiku Old Boys, Hunterville Domain; Border v Taihape, Dallison Park; Ruapehu v Marist Knights, Rochfort Park; Counties v Kaierau, 2pm; Pirates v Marist Celtic, Spriggens Park, 2pm.
Women's competition
Given there is a clear 'Queen of the Hill' moving forward in the Tasman Tanning Women's competition, the other teams will look to fight for position as we reach the end of the first round of matches.
Unbeaten AGC Training Marist Clovers made a big statement with their 71-17 win over second-placed Silks Audit Rātana last Friday night, which allowed defending champions Byfords Construction Taihape to move up into second place, following their default win over Hunterville.
Forward power was the key for Marist in their 13-try win, with their international props Sosoli Talawadua (Black Ferns, Manusina) and Lavenia Nauga-Grey (Fijiana) both scoring doubles, while dynamic No 8 Waimarie Rauhina got a hat-trick.
Marist centre Meilini Meo also grabbed a hat-trick, while Rātana fullback Carrie Rennie got a double for her team.
Taihape also had a heavy loss to Marist on Anzac Day although, just like Rātana, they have comfortably won all their other fixtures.
It all means Friday night's big match at Cooks Gardens between second and third is already shaping as the first part of a pivotal battle to secure the other home semifinal on July 4.
Defending champions Taihape had the wood on the then-new Rātana team last season, but there wasn't much in it, including during a rugged 17-5 semifinal win.
While that battle plays itself out, the other question will be which other club could secure fourth and the remaining semifinal spot, and hopefully Hunterville are back on track as they host fellow newcomers Heidi Macaulay Realty Bulls on Friday night.
Like Hunterville, Bulls secured the first victory of their team's young history against the Marton Queenbeez, winning 81-5 at Marton Park on Saturday afternoon.
Bulls' first five Alyse Bird had a 25-point haul from three tries and five conversions.
Second five Aaone Sio also scored a hat-trick, while fullback Sinead Barrell contributed 11 points from a try and three conversions.
Draw
May 16: Hunterville v Bulls, Hunterville, 6.30pm; Rātana v Taihape, Cooks Gardens, 7.30pm.
May 17: Marton defaulted to Marist.

Marist goal kicking the difference
In Southland club rugby on Saturday the Eastern Northern Barbarians suffered a disappointing 23-19 loss to a fired-up Marist team at Miller St in Invercargill. The Barbarians outscored Marist three tries to two but Scott Eade's goal kicking proved to be the difference for Marist. Marist coach Derek Manson was proud to see how well his team fronted up after a challenging couple of weeks. "We had plenty to play for, everybody put in a hell of a shift. "It was a good showing from the Barbarians as well. They were as motivated as we were." Barbarians hooker Liam Ferguson scored two tries to give the visitors a 12-10 lead at halftime. Marist built a lead in the second half before Barbarians wing Banuve Dretiverata scored to close the gap to 23-19 late in the game. Banuve almost scored the match-winner but for a big tackle from Marist's Curtis Tarrant. In the division one competition on Saturday, the Riversdale-Waikaka Vikings came away from Bluff with three crucial competition points after earning a 29-all draw. Centre Hayden Stephen was the Vikings best and scored one of his team's four tries. Lock Jarrod Lindsay and openside Andrew Harrex were two of the other top performers. Pioneer earned a 25-17 win down at Tokanui. The heat of the afternoon tested the stamina of both teams. The only first half points came from a well deserved converted try to Pioneer's Reece Soper. The second half saw a change of fields when a Pioneer player was injured. Pioneer patiently put together phases of play, largely through aggressive carries by Khan Wilson and James Matheson. The Pioneer scrum and lineout operated smoothly Man of the match was blindside Mitch Hamilton. Second five-eighth Tane Holland also impressed his followers while captain Damon Hurley led by example from No8. Edendale beat Te Anau 64-5. Te Anau travelled down to Edendale with their 22 men and gave it their all. Edendale's utility player Phillip Brown scored two tries on Saturday to bring his career try-scoring total for Edendale to 100. No8 Eruera Takurua was the best of the locals, with lock Alex Burgess and left wing Noah Monson also impressive. There was a big crowd on hand for "Club Day" at Wyndham. Supporters enjoyed the junior rugby followed by the veterans grade with Albion winning 24-22 over their Wyndham counterparts in the curtain raiser match. In the main event, Wyndham maintained their unbeaten record in division one by beating Albion 32-20. Albion fought hard throughout the game. After a brilliant day of club rugby and socialising, Wyndham halfback Luke Caldwell was named man of the match, midfielder Luke Bryson also excelled in the conditions and scored one of Wyndham's five tries. Blindside Sam McMillan had a high work-rate, as did his opposite number for Albion, Cole Birse. Lock Jack Cochrane and wing Macy Scoles also played well for the visitors. Openside Bradley McFaul played his 100th game for Albion. The Albion women's team beat the Marist-Midlands combined team 36-17 in Winton on Saturday. Perhaps the biggest achievement last week by the Queens of Albion was successfully hosting a Pink Ribbon Brunch where they raised almost $2000 for the cause. Chief organisers were Jamie O'Neill and her team of premier women and the participants from the senior side. Pioneer women's team was soundly beaten on their home track by the imposing Star team 66-10. Mataura men lost their division three match 56-22 in Queenstown to Wakatipu's second team. Whanganui rugby: Kaierau remain unbeaten with win over Border
In truth, neither team played as clutch in the big moments that they would have liked – Kaierau missing two other first-half kick chase tries with in-goal fumbles, while in the space of 60 seconds from the 69th minute, both sides gave up tries from intercepts trying to be expansive near their posts to the centres in Ethan Robinson for Kaierau and Border's Alekesio Vakarorogo. But the passion was there – Kaierau may have been shy of backs but got home on some great tryline defence, holding up Border twice, while their forwards' line speed to get up and wrap some jarring hits never wavered. Hooker and try-scorer Joe Edwards gave a committed 80-minute effort, while lock Matt Ashworth was in everything. Reserves Josefa Rokotakala, Kohlt Coveny and Tai Pulemagafa delivered in the final quarter, as the Kaierau pack drove up Border's 50m scrum on the game's last play to bring about fulltime. Although Border played without injured skipper Ngapuke Patea, they welcomed back 55-game Heartland-capped midfielder Timoci 'Jim' Seruwalu, who, while short of a gallop, was always a handful. Flanker Ekenasio Fiso was dangerous in the first half, while standing out in their team's late comeback were reserves Sevanaia Vucinimoce up front and winger-turned halfback Peni Waqatabu. 'They brought it right from the word go, that was something we talked about at halftime,' said Kaierau coach Danny Tamehana. While Waitokia was moving freely at fulltime, Boult and Malo's status will need to be confirmed, as Tamehana considers how to plug multiple holes. 'I'm definitely going to be thinking about that come Monday, it's going to be a whole different backline, but we'll see what happens.' Despite the backline injuries, the forwards were strong even without absent skipper Doug Horrocks, Tamehana praising the reserves for holding back Border's momentum to the finish. 'It's something we spoke about during the week; they brought the energy and the impact, so that was really pleasing to see the bench work real well.' Border co-coach Todd Cowan knows that even with 12 new players this season, the winless streak must end soon. 'I think we're building okay, maybe not getting scoreboard wins, but we are getting wins out there as far as some improvement every week. 'I think the intensity today was definitely a level up from the week previous against Taihape. 'A pretty tough encounter, a few guys look like they're a little bit sore, but I think we'll be right, get back into things on Wednesday and into the next game.'
