Hong Kong needs more annual events: lawmaker

In order to build a bigger economic driver and make better use of Kai Tak Stadium, Hong Kong should aim to have more annual events, according to New People's Party lawmaker Dominic Lee.
Lee, who sits on a government tourism committee, told RTHK's Backchat programme that concerts from groups like K-pop sensation Blackpink next year are great, but annual events like the Rugby Sevens have more of an economic impact.
"One of the suggestions I recommended to the government is that we've got to have annual events...it's good because people [then] have expectations, they will actually set aside their schedule to come to Hong Kong," Lee said.
Lee said the government needs to be more proactive in organising events, rather than leaving it up to the market.
"The government has to be a little more supportive and actually assist organisers to actually secure these annual events to be held in Hong Kong because it's good for Hong Kong's economy."
Lee's remarks follow a football match at Kai Tak Stadium on Tuesday, which saw Hong Kong, China clinch a 1-0 victory over India in front of a sold out crowd, in their first home game at the new venue.
Affordable tickets for the match played a big part in its success, according to Lee.
"Kai Tak Stadium is not a stadium for only the wealthy people, it's a stadium for the Hong Kong people, irrespective of demographic, age or walk of life," he said.
Lee also said the new stadium, with its large capacity, frees up other venues for lesser known artists.
"In the past, really popular singers will do their concerts at Hong Kong Stadium and they'll take up like 20 days, because they can sell out 20 days. So now they're moving to a bigger stadium and it really frees up a lot of other venues as well."

He acknowledged the presence of both "supporting forces" and "counter-currents" in the SAR's charm offensive. "[When] the counter-current is against me, if I still want to swim in that direction, I swim double fast, I make double the effort. I'm asking everybody in the government to double the effort, tell Hong Kong's true story," Lee said. The CE added that Hong Kong must work hard to continue attracting investment and professionals from outside the territory. "Investment is something that drives changes, investment is also something that drives talents to come and talents to remain, because investment leads to actual business," he said.

File photo: RTHK The government said on Friday it plans to charge HK$10 for vehicles using the Central Kowloon Route, while raising tolls for two existing tunnels. It said the toll for users of the new tunnel would be the same for all types of vehicles, while it also wants to charge HK$8 instead of HK$5 for those using the Aberdeen and Shing Mun tunnels. In documents submitted to the legislature, the Transport and Logistics Bureau said public affordability was among the issues that officials had taken into account in making the proposals. It said the higher charges are expected to have a minimal impact on traffic for the two existing tunnels, but the toll hike would double the revenue generated, to around HK$289 million a year. Officials plan to table legal amendments within this Legco year, and if lawmakers approve them, the new charges could take effect within a month. The new route in Kowloon is due to open partially later this year. Officials estimate the tolls from the new route would add HK$257 million a year to public coffers. They said the fee would allow the new tunnel to absorb around one fifth of the East-West bound traffic in Kowloon, easing traffic congestion in busy districts such as Yau Tsim Mong, Kowloon City and Sham Shui Po. If lawmakers approve the proposal, the government plans to charge road users in the middle of next year, when the entire route is scheduled to be completed. The legislature's transport panel is due to discuss the matter in a week.

Photo: RTHK RTHK announced on Friday that it will jointly produce programmes with the Guangzhou Broadcasting Network marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance against Japan following their signing of a memorandum of understanding. RTHK said the programmes – to be broadcast in August and September – will be about key historical events that took place in Hong Kong and Guangdong during the war. Director of Broadcasting Angelina Kwan signed the memorandum with the head of the network, Chen Jiacheng, in Guangzhou. Kwan said the two stations had established a cooperative relationship since 2021 and that RTHK has also worked closely with other broadcasters on the mainland. "Going forward, RTHK will continue to connect with the country and other places and strengthen cross-media multilingual broadcasting," she said in a statement. "We will actively promote the integrated development of the SAR and the mainland, especially that with other cities in the Greater Bay Area, and groom a sense of national identity among the public." RTHK added that the two stations will also co-produce radio drama shows for the first time. They'll be on how Hong Kong residents in the Greater Bay Area interact with people in the rest of the country, demonstrating the residents' high degree of integration, and be aimed at promoting more exchanges. Kwan and the RTHK delegation also visited media facilities in Guangzhou as part of the broadcaster's preparations to televise the National Games to be co-hosted by Guangdong, Macau and Hong Kong in November.
