Malcolm Marx extends Japanese stay
Malcolm Marx has reportedly penned a new deal with the Kubota Spears, which will see the two-time Springbok world champion continue to power the Japanese club until June 2027.
The 30-year-old, who missed out on winning a second title in Japan following Sunday's League One final defeat by Toshiba Brave Lupus, has made more than 30 appearances for the Spears since 2021.

He linked up with the Frans Ludeke-coached outfit in 2020 from fellow Japanese outfit NTT Shining Arcs, who the hulking front-ranker joined after five years with the Lions in South Africa.

One of the original members of the Bomb Squad that helped South Africa win the 2019 world cup, Marx wrestled the Bok No 2 jumper away from Bongi Mbonambi in 2023 before a serious knee injury in a pool clash against Scotland ruled him out for the rest of the tournament.
Marx is widely considered the best hooker on the planet, and is as good as any specialist fetcher over the ball as well as a threat on attack – the Germiston-born rake is the top try-scorer among forwards in Bok history (21 tries in 76 Tests).

One young star set for breakthrough year with Springboks
As the Springboks' 2025 season draws ever closer, Rassie Erasmus has made it clear that this will be another year in which he expands the depth available to the national team by balancing game-time between seniors and newcomers. There are a number of youngsters knocking on the door, but someone who is undoubtedly kicking that door down is none other than Sharks star Ethan Hooker. The 22-year-old is just at the start of a promising career, but the Junior Springbok has already enjoyed a meteoric rise for the Sharks, establishing himself as a key member of a star-studded starting line-up in Durban. On his route to the senior set up, Hooker won the SA Rugby U20 Cup and also formed part of the SA U20 squad that claimed a bronze medal at the World Rugby U20 Championship. Boasting raw pace and power, the 1.94m and 100kg newcomer has since enjoyed a breakthrough season for the Sharks in the URC, boasting the ability to play on the wing or in the midfield. It's unlikely that the Springbok coaches will consider him at centre just yet, but there is every reason to believe his integration into Test rugby could come via the wing, where he has been in top form this past season. The Springboks are blessed with depth on the left wing, but it's on the right wing where the national coaches will be keen to explore some back up options to Cheslin Kolbe in order to manage his game time effectively. This is where Hooker could certainly come into the picture, with his work rate, physicality, size and speed ticking all the boxes that would surely appeal to Rassie Erasmus and his team. Springboks: Highest-paid players and their staggering salaries REVEALED!
The Springboks boast some of the highest-paid players in World Rugby. Being back-toback Rugby World Champions certainly has it's perks if you're a Springboks player. Several top Bok stars salaries have skyrocketed in recent years. Meaning, many Springboks are amongst rugby's highest-paid. So, let's see how they compare with each other. Cheslin Kolbe Faf de Klerk Siya Kolisi Eben Etzebeth Handre Pollard DashTicketsNZ recently published the reported top 30 highest-paid rugby players on the planet. Meanwhile, four Boks made the list with Kolbe, De Klerk, Kolisi and Pollard all amongst the top 10 highest-paid players on the planet. According to this report, Kolbe is the highest paid Springboks player. He takes home a whopping £930 000 a season. This equotes to R22.4 million a year playing for Japanese outfit Suntory Sungoliath. Thus, making him the fourth highest-paid player in World Rugby. Surprisingly, Faf is the second highest-paid Bok and the fifth top-earner in World Rugby. He earns £900 a season playing for Yokohama Canon Eagles in Japan. This equotes to R21. 68 million a season. Thereafter, Springboks captain Kolisi is the highest-paid local South African player. He takes home a staggering £808k per season playing for the Sharks. This equotes to roughly R19.5 million a season. Whilst, Etzebeth was not noted on the publication we have it on good authority that he takes home over R18 million a season. Therefore, he is the fourth highest-paid Springboks club rugby player. Finally, Bok pivot, Pollard is the fifth highest-paid Bok. He takes home a reported £610k a season. This equotes to roughly R14.69 million a season.
