BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Almost a month after leading the Patriots to their first state title since 1986, Binghamton senior Zubayr Griffin continues to make headlines and rack up the awards.
Griffin was named Class AA basketball Co-Player of the Year by the New York State Sports Writers Association. He scored 40 points in the Patriots' state championship double overtime win over Niskayuna at Visions Veterans Memorial Arena on March 21. The Monmouth commit ended with 2,161 career points and averaged 28.7 points per game in his senior year at Binghamton.
He only trails two others in Section IV history in points, Tioga's Jim Ryder with 2,238, and Candor's Toby Foster with 2,231.

Shaquill Griffin set to visit the Las Vegas Raiders

Shaquill Griffin set to visit the Las Vegas Raiders The Seattle Seahawks have slowly been attempting to build better depth at the cornerback position this offseason. One of their targets in recent months has been a former Seahawk by the name of Shaquill Griffin. Originally the 90th overall selection by Seattle during the 2017 NFL draft, Griffin has bounced around the league in recent seasons, most recently playing with the Minnesota Vikings in 2024. Griffin and the Seahawks have met twice this offseason, but it appears there is another team interested in the services of a former Pro Bowl caliber corner: the Las Vegas Raiders. Unsurprisingly, head coach Pete Carroll is also reuniting with a familiar face. Pete Carroll and John Schneider having interest in the same players is pretty par for the course, as the two of them drafted exceptionally well together during their shared tenure in the Pacific Northwest. Should Griffin decide he want to play under his old head coach once more, there are still options out there for the Seahawks to sign to help bolster their cornerback depth. Namely, Rasul Douglas and recently released Jaire Alexander. Seattle is in no hurry. Griffin, Douglas and especially Alexander would represent solid options to put into the mix alongside Riq Woolen and Devon Witherspoon. With training camp, the preseason, and the eventual cuts all teams in the league are bound to make just over the horizon, the Seahawks will likely have more than a few options at their disposal to pick from.

Club World Cup trophy: Photos of Voyager-inspired 2025 FIFA tournament trophy Show Caption Hide Caption FIFA Club World Cup stars not named Mbappe or Messi you need to know Our soccer experts break down the top names that will shine at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup Sports Seriously The massive expansion for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup required a new trophy, and the winner of this summer's big tournament will get a cup drawing inspiration from the cosmos. The Club World Cup, which kicks off Saturday and will play out at stadiums throughout the United States, used to be an awkward event taking place in December and featuring just seven teams. The new edition will see 32 clubs vying for the new trophy, which per FIFA is inspired by the golden records placed on the Voyager I and Voyager II probes (two of the only known objects created by humans to depart the Solar System). The trophy, created in conjunction with Tiffany & Co., features moveable parts, which per FIFA allows it to "transform from a shield into a multifaceted and orbital structure." The first team to ever lift the new trophy will have to battle their way through the group stage and knockout rounds, with the tournament final set for July 13 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Below are images and what to know about the new FIFA Club World Cup trophy: Club World Cup details: Design notes for new FIFA trophy FIFA has lofty ambitions for the revamped Club World Cup, with this expanded format only finally getting underway in 2025 after years of planning and discussions. FIFA had suitably aspirational language around what inspired the design of the Club World Cup trophy. The global governing body for soccer cited "pioneering journeys, the periodic table, astronomy and space travel's historic Voyager Golden Records" as influencing the trophy, which has the name of all 211 FIFA member nations inscribed on it. The trophy — which is plated in 24-carat gold — also includes writing in 13 languages as well as in Braille, and includes space to etch the names of the first 24 winners into it for posterity. Symbols representing the sport are featured, as are "celestial symbols representing the approximate positions of planets at the time of FIFA's foundation on Saturday, May 21 1904 in Paris, France, and [for] the tournament's opening match on June 14 2025 in Miami, USA." "The team who lift this trophy will hold the world of club football in their hands," said FIFA president Gianni Infantino in a press release. "To the players who win it, history belongs to you! Let's take it to the world and celebrate it as we look forward to the start of a new era for football." Anthony Ledru, the president and CEO of designers Tiffany & Co., added that "the FIFA Club World Cup Trophy is the next chapter in our long history of creating the world's most revered symbols of athletic achievement."
