Gokhale Institute & Servants of India Society now lock horns over cash control

PUNE: Tensions between the Pune-based Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) and parent Servants of India Society (SIS) have flared again with both trading allegations over control of a key bank account.

The feud comes against the backdrop of an FIR filed on GIPE's complaint in April accusing SIS's former secretary Milind Deshmukh of misappropriating Rs 1.4 crore.
At a news conference Thursday, GIPE's officiating deputy registrar Vishal Gaikwad accused SIS of wrongdoing, including freezing its account. SIS president Damodar Sahoo countered the charges.
"We came to know 3-4 days ago Sahoo wrote to the bank to freeze the account from which staff salaries are disbursed.
But we met the bank's officials and made it operational," Gaikwad said.
Sahoo, on the other hand, insisted that it was a joint account with two signatories, SIS and GIPE. However, GIPE had removed SIS's signatory without any prior notification, Sahoo claimed. "We wrote to the bank to freeze the account to know what happened. This has been a joint account since inception. There have always been two signatories and one cannot be randomly deleted," Sahoo said.
On the earlier funds-related FIR against Deshmukh, Gaikwad said he had written to police asking them to add Sahoo's name to the case. Sahoo said he has no information about GIPE's letter, nor have police contacted him.
In view of their allegations against SIS of misusing GIPE funds, Gaikwad said the institute wrote to the charity commissioner requesting suspension of SIS leadership and appointment of an administrator.

Sahoo contended that GIPE has no right to make such a demand since SIS is its parent body.
A few months ago, SIS had accused interim VC Shankar Das of allegedly bypassing procedures in faculty and staff recruitment at GIPE, which escalated to SIS removing Sanjeev Sanyal as chancellor and appointing an interim chancellor.
Sanyal hit back, alleging lack of transparency in financial transactions of SIS. He announced that a panel led by JNU vice-chancellor Santishree Pandit would inquire into the allegations against Das, after which Sahoo called it all a misunderstanding and Sanyal was reinstated. Pandit's committee later gave a clean chit to Das.

UAE deports 245 crore drug trafficking accused

Mumbai: The CBI, through the Interpol channel, has got drug smuggler Tahir Salim Dola deported from the UAE on Friday in connection with a case of trafficking 126 kg narcotics worth Rs 245 crore being investigated by the crime branch. Dola was wanted in a Mumbai police case registered last year, with a Red Notice issued against him through Interpol. The CBI, collaborating with Interpol and the NCB of Abu Dhabi, geo-located Dola in the UAE through close monitoring and initiated legal proceedings for his deportation, the agency said in a press release. Dola operated a synthetic drug manufacturing factory in Sangli district of Maharashtra. During the investigation, police found that Dola handled the trafficking operation from abroad. In Jan, the Abu Dhabi anti-drug unit arrested Dola in the UAE, and subsequently, Mumbai police, through the MHA, sent a deportation request to the UAE. Earlier, Mumbai police arrested a hawala operator from Kalbadevi along with 11 others, including key accused Praveen Shinde, the financier of the drug syndicate in the case. Lord Jagannath windfall for buses on Digha route

Kolkata: There is a rush to visit the Lord Jagannath Temple in Digha, and the North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) is enjoying every bit of it. The NBSTC claimed to have sold tickets worth around Rs 20 lakh in its first three weeks of introducing Volvo buses plying from six destinations in north Bengal and Malda to Digha via Kolkata. The service was inaugurated on May 28 by chief minister Mamata Banerjee. From then until June 11, there were 22 bus trips from Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Siliguri, Raiganj, and Malda. A total of 2,598 passengers boarded the Volvo buses, said NBSTC. "The Kolkata-Digha route is running at full capacity till Rath Yatra. Siliguri-Kolkata route also shows nearly full bookings. We found that NBSTC managed a profit of over Rs 3 lakh," said Dipankar Piplai, managing director, NBSTC. "We are planning ahead for the pujas and will offer discounts. But it will vary from week to week," said Piplai. The senior officers of NBSTC agreed that the success is largely due to tourists wishing to visit the new temple. "There is just one direct train to Digha from north Bengal. Since the hills began to witness the rain earlier than usual — and the state is gearing up for the first-ever Ratha Yatra from the new temple — it seems Digha is now the most preferred destination," said an official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Pulakesh Majumdar from Siliguri said, "I booked tickets for my family last weekend. I found the journey to Digha smooth. On our way back, we are taking the Volvo bus from Kolkata again this Saturday," said Majumdar. "The temple has transformed Digha's tourism landscape," said Sunil Kumar Das, a transporter from Digha, adding, "the NBSTC's timing in launching these services couldn't have been better."
