College Sports Report: ACC eyes more non-conference games
The Atlantic Coast Conference is trimming the league slate from 20 games to 18 to make room for more marquee non-conference contests, CBS Sports reported Wednesday.
The ACC is making the change effective with the 2025-26 men's basketball schedule in order to help reverse a recent trend of dwindling NCAA Tournament bids, per the report.
The 18-team conference's athletic directors reportedly approved the move in a call on Wednesday morning.
The ACC sent just four teams to the 2025 NCAA Tournament, including the controversial choice of North Carolina. It marked the lowest percentage (22.2 percent) of ACC teams in the field since it expanded to 64 teams in 1985.
The Southeastern Conference, by comparison, sent a record 14 teams to the 2025 NCAA Tournament.
The ACC sent seven teams to the 2021 tournament, followed by five in each of the next three years and four this season.
Adding more Quad 1 and Quad 2 opponents to the schedule may not fix all the problems in the ACC, which has been trending downward since the COVID-19 pandemic in part due to the retirements of high-profile coaches Roy Williams (North Carolina), Mike Krzyzewski (Duke), Jim Boeheim (Syracuse) and Tony Bennett (Virginia).
The Big 12 Conference announced a similar change to the schedule in March, a reduction from 20 to 18 games.
The SEC's 16 members play an 18-game league schedule, while the 18-team Big Ten Conference has a 20-game slate.

The No. 11 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Tigers gave up four runs in the ninth inning of a 9-6 loss to West Virginia on Saturday and committed seven errors while allowing 13 hits in their season-ending 16-4 loss to Kentucky the following day. Texans QB C.J. Stroud (shoulder) limited at OTAs
Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud did not throw at Houston's organized team activities Tuesday as he deals with minor shoulder tightness, according to multiple reports. Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley recently said that he is not bothered by Stroud's lack of passing reps. "Yeah, he's locked in every step of the way. No concerns whatsoever," Caley told reporters Friday. "Everybody has a specific routine relative to their own routine, specific to whatever. Whether it's football, whether it's athletic training, et cetera, and he's doing a great job and he's out here and he's working." Stroud, 23, is entering his third season. He crafted an impressive debut season with a passer rating of 100.8 and 4,108 yards, both the third-best in NFL history for a rookie. He was the first Texans player to win Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Last season, Stroud came back down to earth a bit. His yards per game dropped from 273.9 in 2023 to 219.2 in 2024, and his interception total jumped from five to 12. In two seasons with the Texans, Stroud is 19-13 with 43 touchdowns, 7,835 yards and a 93.7 passer rating. Jazz hire away longtime Celtics exec Austin Ainge
The Utah Jazz hired longtime Boston Celtics executive Austin Ainge as their new president of basketball operations on Monday. Ainge, 43, worked in the Boston front office for 17 years, most recently as an assistant general manager, and is the son of Jazz CEO and alternate governor Danny Ainge. 'We're absolutely thrilled to welcome Austin Ainge as our new President of Basketball Operations,' said Jazz governor Ryan Smith. 'Austin is one of the brightest minds in the NBA -- his 17 years with the Celtics have given him incredible insight into every part of an organization. I've known Austin for 15 years, and I've watched him grow into an accomplished, innovative, and strategic basketball executive who's ready to lead this organization.' Justin Zanik will remain in his role as Utah's general manager and will work together with Austin Ainge and head coach Will Hardy moving forward. 'I couldn't be more excited about the bright future of this organization,' Austin Ainge said. 'I look forward to partnering with Ryan and Ashley Smith and our other leaders within the Utah Jazz and will utilize my experience over the last 17 years building a championship-caliber organization.
