MEA takes up ill-treatment of Indian man at Newark airport with US
India has raised with the US an incident of an Indian man being handcuffed and allegedly treated like a criminal at the Newark Airport, official sources said on Wednesday.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) raised the matter with the US embassy in New Delhi, they said.
Videos of the Indian youth being pinned to the ground by US authorities at the Newark airport have gone viral.
The Indian embassy in Washington DC and the Indian Consulate in New York have also been in touch with the US authorities to ascertain the details of the case, the sources said.
"We have so far not received any details about the incident or the circumstances under which he was restrained, the flight he had to board or boarded and his final destination," said a source.
India is continuing to follow up on the matter, the sources said.
The incident of the Indian man, being "handcuffed and allegedly treated like a criminal" was filmed by an Indian-American, Kunal Jain, who said he felt "helpless and heartbroken".

State renews pledge to end child labour
Patna: On the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour, symbolic cheques for Rs 25,000 were distributed among children rescued from child labour as financial support from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. The programme, organised by the department of labour resources, was aimed at raising awareness and reaffirm the state's commitment to ending child exploitation. Deepak Anand, secretary of the department, said around 30 children had been rescued so far in the 2025-26 financial year. In the previous years, 1,319 children were rescued in 2023-24 and 1,148 in 2024-25. He added that the department recovers Rs 20,000 from offending employers and deposits the amount into the Child Labour Rehabilitation-cum-Welfare Fund. The state govt contributes an additional Rs 5,000 per rescued child to strengthen the rehabilitation process. Each child also receives Rs 25,000 from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to secure their future. "World Day Against Child Labour reminds us that there should be no place for child labour in a civilised society. It is a social crime and curbing it is every citizen's moral duty. He said children are a nation's most valuable asset and their well-being reflects the social and economic development of society. He reminded the gathering that, under Indian law, employing children under 14 or adolescents aged 14-18 in hazardous workplaces can result in a fine between Rs 20,000 and Rs 50,000, imprisonment from six months to two years, or both. Repeat offenders face rigorous imprisonment of up to three years. Labour enforcement officers and superintendents were honoured during the programme for their work. Strongly condemn the despicable act: India on vandalisation of Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh
India on Thursday strongly condemned the vandalisation of the ancestral home of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in Bangladesh by a mob and termed the violent attack a "disgrace" to the memory and inclusive philosophy espoused by the poet. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said this in response to a query on the reports on the vandalisation that took place earlier this month. He also urged the interim government in Bangladesh to rein in these elements and take "strict action" against the perpetrators to prevent reoccurrence of such incidents. Kachharibari is the ancestral home and revenue office of the Tagore family located in Sirajganj district. Tagore created many of his literary works while living in this mansion. "We strongly condemn the despicable act, attack and vandalisation of the ancestral home of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore by a mob," the MEA spokesperson said. 1 Bangladeshi national, 1 Indian tout arrested in Tripura
The Government Railway Police (GRP) Monday informed that one Bangladeshi national and an Indian tout were arrested during two separate raids at the Agartala railway station in Tripura. In the first incident, a Bangladeshi national, identified as Pranajit Ray, 35, was arrested during a joint operation conducted by the Agartala GRP, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Border Security Force (BSF) and other sister agencies on Wednesday. During the preliminary interrogation, the investigators found that Ray, a resident of Sylhet district in Bangladesh, illegally entered Tripura and had planned to go to Kolkata from the Agartala railway station. 'We seized some documents and some Indian currency. We are examining these things,' said an officer. In a separate incident, an Indian human trafficker, a resident of Chanipur in West Tripura district, was also arrested during a joint operation conducted by security agencies. A GRP officer said the trafficker, identified as Debasish Malakar alias Debu, used to provide food and shelter to Bangladeshi nationals who entered Tripura illegally. 'He was absconding for a long time. We arrested him yesterday (Wednesday) and produced before court today (Friday),' he said. Several Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas have been arrested for entering Tripura illegally in recent months. As per a report of the Tripura Police, 816 Bangladeshi nationals, 79 Rohingya persons and two Nigerians were arrested in the state between January 1, 2024, and February 28 this year. Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, recently informed that 2,815 Bangladeshi nationals were arrested for illegally crossing the Indo-Bangla border into Tripura from 2022 to October 31, 2024, out of which 1,746 have been pushed back to their country and 1,069 are housed in jail custody, temporary detention centres, shelter homes or are out on bail. Tripura shares 856 km of international border with Bangladesh, much of which is covered with barbed wire fence except a few patches that are still unfenced due to local disputes.
