S.P. Velumani demands rollback of Coimbatore Corporation's drinking water and UGD tariff hike
AIADMK MLA S.P. Velumani, along with five other party legislators, petitioned District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar on Monday, demanding the withdrawal of a Coimbatore Corporation council resolution that increased deposit and monthly charges for underground drainage (UGD) and drinking water supply.
The MLAs said the revised charges would add to the financial burden on the public, alongside increase in property tax and other tariffs. They urged the district administration to intervene and rollback the decision.
The petition also raised concerns over civic infrastructure. It stated that around 700 km of roads had been damaged due to UGD and 24/7 water supply projects and that the Corporation had not carried out proper restoration. The MLAs said damaged roads had become hazardous during rains.
They also pointed to the poor maintenance of Smart City lakes, claiming water hyacinth and vegetation had taken over many waterbodies and walkways. The administration was urged to expedite pending works such as the Western Bypass and the SIHS Colony bridge.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Velumani said recent gale and rains had caused crop damage in the district, but adequate relief had not been provided. He reiterated long-standing issues, including the unresolved odour problem at the Vellalore dump yard and delays in the allocation of buses to city outskirts.
He also questioned the irregular supply of drinking water. 'Coimbatore has a population of over 22 lakh and requires only around 290 MLD water if supplied at 135 LPCD per person. But, despite receiving about 320 MLD water from various schemes, water is being supplied only once in four or five days. The administration must consult TWAD Board and Corporation officials to ensure regular distribution,' he said.
On the Pilloor III drinking water project, he said many of the planned elevated tanks were still incomplete and called upon the district administration to ensure speedy completion.

HM Shah to attend TN BJP core committee meet in Madurai today; NDA expansion likely
Chennai: Union Home Minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah is set to visit Madurai on Saturday, sparking renewed political interest in Tamil Nadu over the party's southern strategy and the potential expansion of the NDA in the state. According to party sources, HM Shah will arrive in Madurai late on Saturday and is scheduled to participate in the BJP's Tamil Nadu core committee meeting the following day. He will also address office-bearers from the state, district, and mandal levels in what is being viewed as a strategic push to strengthen the BJP's base in the southern districts. BJP national co-in-charge for Tamil Nadu, P. Sudhakar Reddy, said the visit would primarily focus on strengthening the party's organisational structure and preparing for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. 'He will speak on various matters, including the achievements of the Modi government over the past 11 years. Amit Shah will also outline a road map for the BJP's strategy in the state,' Reddy said. HM Shah's visit comes at a time when discussions over the NDA's expansion in Tamil Nadu are gaining traction. His previous visit to the state on April 11 marked a significant political moment, as it was during that trip to Chennai that he formally announced the revival of the BJP-AIADMK alliance. That announcement sent ripples across the state's political landscape. Commenting on the choice of Madurai as the venue, BJP state vice-president Narayanan Thirupathy dismissed any special political significance. 'The Union Home Minister has previously chaired meetings in Chennai and Coimbatore. This time it's Madurai,' he said. However, BJP insiders suggest that Madurai, often referred to as the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu, holds symbolic value. The city has long been a stronghold of spiritual and cultural traditions aligned with the Sangh Parivar, and the party is keen to consolidate its base in the southern belt. In line with this, the BJP and its affiliate Hindu Munnani are organising a 'Lord Muruga Devotees Conference' in Madurai later this month. Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson and senior leader ANS Prasad highlighted the impact of HM Shah's earlier visit. 'His April 11 trip to Tamil Nadu changed the political narrative in the state. The announcement of the AIADMK-BJP alliance shook the DMK and its allies. Since then, leaders including Chief Minister M.K. Stalin have consistently addressed the implications of that alliance. Tamil Nadu politics can now be seen in two phases — before and after Amit Shah's April visit.' Prasad added that HM Shah's upcoming speech in Madurai is expected to offer clear direction for the 2026 elections.

Census delay a sinister move to weaken southern states: MK Stalin slams Centre
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has alleged that the delay in conducting the National Census and the upcoming delimitation exercise are part of a calculated move by the Union Government to undermine the political representation of southern states. "The Census delay is no accident. The delimitation plan is not a coincidence," says the delay in the Census a 'sinister design,' Stalin warned that states like Tamil Nadu, which followed population control policies, would now be penalised for their progress. 'The 2027 Census will form the basis for the next delimitation, replacing the 1971 data. This gives the Union BJP Government the means to restructure Parliamentary representation to its advantage, at the cost of the Southern States,' he questioned the credibility of the Union Government's assurances, saying, 'The Ministry of Home Affairs claims that the concerns of affected States will be addressed. But these are vague remarks. What is needed is a clear Parliamentary commitment and a suitable constitutional amendment.' Drawing parallels with the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister remarked, 'While the Union Government spoke of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, Article 370 was abrogated. Elections were held. Assurances were given in the Supreme Court. Yet, Jammu and Kashmir remains a Union Territory. This is the track record of the BJP we are dealing with.'Warning of the potential consequences of the proposed delimitation, Stalin said, 'If the Union Government proceeds with the delimitation based on the 2027 Census, the democratic power of peninsular India will be reduced to irrelevance. The danger I warned of is at our doorstep.'Taking a swipe at the opposition AIADMK and its leader, Edappadi K Palaniswami, Stalin said, 'Even if betrayers like the AIADMK choose to kneel before the BJP for their political survival, the people of Tamil Nadu led by the DMK will never allow our state to be punished for its progress.'Must Watch IN THIS STORY#Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin

DMK doubts EPS delimitation claim, says he's acting as BJP mouthpiece
This came as a response to EPS's remarks on X earlier in the day, where he said Chief Minister MK Stalin was speaking of 'fair delimitation' while 'presiding over the most unfair, corrupt, and dynastic regime Tamil Nadu has ever seen'. Palaniswami said the AIADMK would neither allow Tamil Nadu's representation in Parliament to be reduced nor its (state) voice to be silenced. 'In 2027, or whenever delimitation may come, the AIADMK will fiercely defend Tamil Nadu's rightful voice and future,' Palaniswami reiterated in his post on X. On June 2, the CM charged that by delaying the Census to 2027, the BJP-led union government's plans to reduce Tamil Nadu's parliamentary representation have become clear. 'The people of Tamil Nadu are tired of your drama and crocodile tears,' Palaniswami said on X. Regupathy, in his response, stated it was the CM who first exposed 'the BJP's plot' to reduce the number of MP seats of Tamil Nadu. 'After the CM exposed the BJP's plans, EPS has now come to its rescue. It is a blatant lie to claim that he is opposing Hindi imposition and delimitation while aligning with the very party that pushes for them in Tamil Nadu,' the minister charged.
