Buffalo Bills 2025 positional review: Cornerbacks
2025 Season Recap
Christian Benford has ascended to the No. 1 cornerback spot for the Buffalo Bills. His development has been remarkable.
Benford, a former sixth-round pick, flashed his coverage skills as a rookie. They have only become stronger, putting him in conversation as one of the top-tier cornerbacks in the game. Benford missed two games last season, and the drop off was quite steep from Benford to the second tier of Bills cornerbacks. Benford missed time against Kansas City in the AFC Championship game, and it was nothing short of a disaster for Buffalo's defense.
Rasul Douglas was stellar when he arrived in Buffalo after a mid-season trade with the Green Bay Packers in 2023. However, after being a turnover machine in his initial season with the Bills, Douglas did not record an interception last year. His play was adequate but didn't live up to his first season in Western New York.
Taron Johnson is one of the most important and underrated players on this roster. Johnson is a premier slot cornerback. He is a stellar coverage corner who blankets slot receivers. Arguably, Johnson is the best at his position in the league.
Ja'Marcus Ingram played well in limited time. He stepped in and showed nice athleticism when called upon. In addition, Ingram played a large chunk of special teams snaps for Buffalo.
The Kaiir Elam experiment seems to be over. Elam is extremely athletic and, in theory, should be a solid cornerback. However, it just hasn't come together for some reason. When pressed into action, Elam looks lost. It's unfortunate because the former first-round pick appeared to be a player who could have been a difference-maker for Buffalo.
Cam Lewis played more safety this past season. However, he still logged time at cornerback when needed in a pinch.
Brandon Codrington played limited snaps at cornerback. His largest contributions came in the return game for the Bills.

Big Question
Who will start opposite Benford next year?
Benford is in the fold for at least one more year. It would be shocking if the Bills didn't move forward and sign him to a long-term deal. He has blossomed into the top player in the Buffalo secondary.
The spot opposite Benford is a bit more challenging to forecast: Elam has not developed into a reliable player, and Douglas took a step back last year. Buffalo has played a great deal of zone defense, but there are rumblings that things might be changing a little bit in the future. Most likely, the CB2 is not on the roster right now.
Important Stats
Tackles: Cam Lewis (68), Taron Johnson (65)
Interceptions: Christian Benford, Ja'Marcus Ingram, Taron Johnson (2)
Passes defensed: Christian Benford (10)
Tackles for loss: Rasul Douglas (5)
Forced fumbles: Christian Benford (2)
2025 NFL draft
Buffalo's salary cap situation is a bit tight. Thus, they need to make the most of this year's draft. Cornerback is a high priority for the team, so Brandon Beane will need to find a solid option to complement Christian Benford. Buffalo has eight picks, with the possibility of adding two compensatory picks. That draft capital should give the Bills some flexibility in selecting a cornerback by the end of day two in the draft.

Josh Allen would "absolutely love" to play flag football in Olympics

The Olympic flag football tournament is three years away. But plenty of current players are talking about it. Most recently, Bills quarterback Josh Allen made it clear he'd be interested in pursuing gold for the United States. 'I'm not gonna disrespect the guys that are playing flag football right now, but, you know, if there's an opportunity for me to try, I would absolutely love to,' Allen told reporters on Tuesday. 'I've always wanted to compete for my country and, you know, every time the Olympics are on, I'm tuned in and glued to the screen. But I think there's really no greater honor to do that. That'd be really cool.' Yes, flag football is a very different game than tackle football. However, it's hard to imagine a physical specimen like Allen not figuring it out — and not being completely dominant. Many decisions will need to be made by USA Football regarding how the U.S. men's team will be selected. And, yes, current flag football players deserve an opportunity to compete. It's hard to imagine anyone competing with Josh Allen, if he's determined to go for gold.

Christian McCaffrey says he feels 'great' after 49ers minicamp on heels of injury-plagued season

Christian McCaffrey's health will be one of the biggest 49ers storylines heading into the new NFL season. When healthy, McCaffrey's one of the most dynamic weapons in football, an offensive talent who can make the difference for a good team in contending or not contending for a Super Bowl. But that's a significant contingency. Advertisement Injuries have limited McCaffrey to seven or fewer games in four of his 10 NFL seasons. One of those seasons was 2024, when a calf/Achilles injury sustained in training camp lingered throughout the season. That and a PCL injury suffered in Week 12 against the Buffalo Bills limited McCaffrey to four games. The 49ers wrapped two days of minicamp on Wednesday on the heels of multiple OTA sessions since May. McCaffrey's been a participant throughout. And he's optimistic about his health heading into the 2025 season. McCaffrey was asked on Wednesday if he feels any pain or has any lingering concern from the Achilles injury that limited him so much in 2024. "No, I feel great," McCaffrey said. "This offseason, I spent a lot of time kind of building back a base starting from scratch. A lot of it was rehab. I wanted to put myself in a position where I didn't miss a day of OTAs and I could practice and play football again and be healthy and not miss a day. Advertisement "I did that. And now we can kind of kick back up to training again. But, I feel great." That's great news for the 49ers and their fans. The last time McCaffrey played a relatively healthy season was in 2023. In 16 games, he led the league in rushing (1,459 yards), yards from scrimmage (2,023) and total touchdowns (21) en route to his third All-Pro selection and Offensive Player of the Year Honors. The 49ers finished 12-5, won the NFC West and advanced to the Super Bowl. With McCaffrey limited to four games last season, the 49ers fell to last place in the NFC West and missed the playoffs at 6-11. McCaffrey's absence, of course, wasn't the only issue ailing the 49ers, who fell short of expectations across the board, most notably with a defense that allowed 25.6 points per game. But it didn't help. The 49ers are hoping to bounce back from last season's unexpected slide and back into the Super Bowl picture. Having a healthy McCaffrey who can still produce at 29 years old will be key to those hopes.

Report: Cincinnati Bengals set to release linebacker Germaine Pratt

The Cincinnati Bengals are expected to release veteran linebacker Germaine Pratt, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Pratt, 29, played six seasons for the Bengals. A third-round draft pick in 2019, Pratt played a significant role in the Bengals' defense during Cincinnati's Super Bowl run in 2021 and return to the AFC Championship game the following season. Advertisement In 96 games, Pratt recorded 616 tackles, seven forced fumbles, seven interceptions and five fumble recoveries. The Bengals this year used their second- and fourth-round draft picks to select linebackers Demetrius Knight Jr. of South Carolina and Barrett Carter of Clemson. Cincinnati also signed former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Oren Burks in free agency. The Enquirer will update this story. Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Germaine Pratt (57) pressures Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson (3) as he throws in the fourth quarter of the NFL Week 13 game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Pittsburgh Steelers at Paycor Stadium in downtown Cincinnati on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2024. The Steelers won 44-38. This article originally appeared on Cincinnati Enquirer: Report: Bengals expected to release linebacker Germaine Pratt
